Chariot Used by the Haler of Kaypt 4,000 Year* Atro Together with Other Valuable Hello* Found In large Chamber. An investigation of the tomb of King Thothmes IV., near Thebes, in which the splendid chariot was found by Mr. Davis, an American, has revealed many interesting features. Around the large chamber, in which there is a magnificent granite sar cophagus, covered with texts from the “Book of the Dead,” are smaller chambers. The floor of one of these is strewn with mummified loins of beef, legs of mutton, and trussed ducks and geese, offerings made to the dead king nearly 4,000 years ago. Clay bearing the king’s name are attached to the doors of the chamber. These indicate that the Egyptians of the eighteenth dynasty to some extent anticipated the in vention of printing, the raised por tions of the seals having been smeared with a blue tint befor- the clay was Impressed. The walls of one chamber are adorned with paintings. There is also an inscription stat ing that the tomb was plundered by robbers In the eighth year of llorem heb, but was restored as far as pos sible by the reigning Pharaoh. It was doubtless then that the jewelry buried with Thothmes was stolen. The floor of this chamber is covered with vases and dishes and other ob jects, nearly all of which were wan tonly broken, opparently by the rob bers. Some had been rejmired. There was also a piece of textile fabric in which hieroglyphics of vari ous colors are woven with such won derful skill as to present the ap pearance of painting on linen. The great find, however, is the chariot. The body alone remains, but this is in perfect condition. The wooden frame was first covered with papier mache and this with stucco, which is carved into scenes from the battles which Pharaoh fought in Syria. Every detail is exquisitely fin ished, the whole being one of the finest specimens of art preserved from antiquity. With the chariot, was found a leath er gauntlet which protected the king’s hand and wrist when he used a bow or the reins. TO START BRIQUETTE WORKS. Machinery Hein* Ilouuht In Germany for Manufacture of lie Ue.ponUn of lilvulte In North Dakota. William De Labarre, director of the Washburn-Pillsbury mills, Minneap olis, is in Magdeburg, Germany, buy ing machinery for the briquette works that W. D. Washburn intends to build at Bismarck, N.D. Briquettes, which are fuel made from lignite, are widely used in Germany. It is esti mated that 55,000 square miles of lig nite underly the Dakotas and Mon tana, while another wide belt ex tends through the gulf states from Florida to Texas. German geologists have long believed that the Amer ican cities would solve, the smokeless fuel question by the use of briquettes. President Francis, of the St. Louis exposition, during his short stay here, accumulated papers and other information on the subject with the view to the introduction of briquettes at St. Louis. He took with him sev eral sample briquettes made from Dakota lignite sent to the German works by Mr. Washburn. BRITISH ARMY AND NAVY. Estimates for tke Next Yr' E*- prnori Placed at the Enormous Sum of M,000,000 Pounds. Mr. Brodrlck wants £34,500,000 sterling for the army next year. Lord Selborne requires the same amount for the navy. The army estimates, says the New York Tribune’s London representative, have never been ap proached except in time of war, and navy estimates, which exceed the cur rent year’s figures by £3,500,000 ster ling, have broken all records. John Bright once said that a government which could not rule the United King dom on £70,000,000 sterling a year should be turned out of office. The army and navy alone will cost almost this sum for the ensuing 13 months, and the total uutionbl expenditure will reach £150,000,000 sterling. The outlook for the British taxpayer is gloomier than ever. TWO GIFTS TO HARVARD. Scholarship la Memory of Kornw Student Established, and a Mem orial Fuad to Car* for Sick. Manitowoc, Wla, NEW PLAN TO RUN CARS. km Engllih Inventor Appllen the Wlrelee* Theory to Motors and Claims Success. Thomas H. Williams, a civil en gineer of London, already known for several electrical inventions, claims he preceded Braun, of Strausburg, in applying etheric waves to driving mo tors unconnected with any source of supply; in other words, propelling motors by wireless telegraphy. Mr. Williams Bays he has been working ou the invention since 1898. He says: "My system, a?, tested, consisted of a high frequency alternating electric generator from which energy is dis> charged into space. "There is no connection whatever between the motor and the genera tor. The motor is attached to a model ear, which is arranged to run on a. circular railway, the transmit ter being in the center. One termin ator of this generator is attached to the transmitter and tlie other is con nected with the earth. "The model car is provided with a collector, by means of which the etheric waves* or rays, are picked up. This collector is connected with the motor through the medium of a spe cially devised transformer, whereby the etheric energy is transformed in to essential electro-motive force for operating the motor, the earth circuit being completed through the rails, and the wheels of the model ear.” Mr, Williams expects to apply his system to railways as well as to road-motor traffic from central gen erating stations, but be Is. not yet wholly satisfied that danger might not result from nu atmosphere to heavily charged with electricity. The fort was 400 feet square, nnd having access to water, nnd carrying a large supply of food, was equipped for a long siege. There now remains nothing of it. Two cannon pointing down the river have been the only things to mark the spot where it stood till two years ago. when the Daughters of the American Devolution erected a monument there.
