J., re cently caused considerable uneasiness among residents of the neighborhood for several days ami nights. Some were of the opinion that the bouse from which they emanated was haunt ed, while others declared a child bad been put in the place and then aban doned. The dwelling is occupied by a Mrs, Colboek, who left a few days ago to visit friends. The next morning sev eral neighbors held a consultation and decided to call in the police and de mand an investigation of the myste rious bowlings and wallings. A policeman decided to notify Mrs. Col beck, and while lie was busy at the telephone other delegations made their appearance at the city hall. The po lice then decided to act. The city elec trician and a fireman were ordered to Investigate tin mystery. Armed to the teeth with revolvers ami a large ladder, :he two men proceeded to the house, which was surrounded by a crowd. They were unable to force the doors or windows on the first floor, and the lad der was placed to a second-story win dow. The fireman climbed to the top of the ladder and disappeared through the w in dow of the room. The crowd stood sp< 11- bound for a few moments. When he was seen to emerge with an object in his arms a cheer went up from those below, but when In held the form out at arms’ length, exhibiting a large black tom cat, tiie crowd quickly diminished. The fireman found the half-famished animal in one of the rooms, moaning and wail ing for its mistress. One of the neigh bors took the animal and will care for it until Mrs. Colls-ck returns. At, the close of hist year’s business the general fund of the state treasury contained a balance of $951,033.85; the common school fund. $763.65; the slate university fund, $1,079; the agricultur al college fund, $1,744.11, and the state normal school fund $11,628.82. The bal ance in the general fund is unusually large because of the sum of $458,000 received from the federal government last spring, in part payment of the state war claim, and because of in creased revenues from the railroads, insurance companies and other sources during the year. Divorced at Age of In the circuit court in Racine John Martin Krouse was divorced from An nie Cecelia Krouse on grounds of de sertion. The case is of mtire than us ual interest, as the parties to the suit are about 60 years of age. Many years ago the couple were married in tier many. They emigrated to this country and settled in Chicago. There the hua became a brewer and accumulated wealth. Otis Henry Brand, for 21 years city editor of the Janesville Daily Recorder, and one of the best known newspapt r men of southern Wisconsin, died at his home in that city from a cerebral hem orrhage, aged 48 years. Mr. Brand had been in failing health for nearly three years. He is survived by Ids widow, Mrs. Louise Fenton Brand, who is well known as a newspaper woman of ability. lilt 111. 111 I’M > .
