Gathered each i. week by Our Rustling Associate Editors : ' Waldport Local strawberries are plentiful in the Waldport market. The Fish came down from New port the third with a partial load of mercandise and took out a load of shingles from the Ludemann & McMillin mill. The annual meeting of the "Yachats Telephone company was held ac the company's office at Ocean View the 2d. Monday was loud sock day for the local high school. All colors of the rainbow were displayed by all ex cept the dignified seniors. R. R. Miller, district supervisor, was a Wa'dport visitor this week. Cyrus Patterson left for the Val ley Tuesday and expects to remain most of the Summer. The closing week of the high -school has been a very pleasant one. Tuesday evening was spent on a river picnic, the party going -as far as Tidewater. Wednesday evening was set aside for a grand bonfire on the ocean beach where the Waldport band assisted in- mak ing things pleasant. On Thursday evening a club swinging entertain-, ment wa3 given at Kents Hall, and the graduating exercises were helu it the same place Friday evening. Chitwood Mrs. Annie Hart came up from Toledo Thursday morning, return ing .Saturday evening. Elder ErntsCn of Troutdale came in Thursday evening and spent Fri day here. Elder Titus Kurtichanov csme in ' Friday evening to visit his parents lor a few days. He held a meeling at the S. D. A. church Saturday. J.E.Wilson shipped a ton of roosspete to California Tueday. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wilson started Wednesday for their home at Red Bluff. California. They expect to visit relatives at Cottage Urove and Medford on their way home. Everybody cordially invited to attend the strawberry festival at Riverside Fruit Farm June 15th. Bring your baskets well filled and "have a good time. Those who can not bring lunch come anyway. Ona A. H. Phelps went to Waldport .Monday. Chauncey Ohmart went to Tide water Monday, returning home Tuesday. Road' Supervisor John Coovert "had quite a force of men out work ing the roads Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Tartar and son, Darrel, are visiting relatives In Ona. Quite a number of the ladies of this vicinity spent Tuesday . after noon with Mrs. S. C. Denny. Mrs. Francis Gatens and daugh ter returned to their home Friday from Newport. Mr. and Mrs. George Selby and children, Mrs. H. H. Edwards and son Clarence, were Linville visitors Sunday. Mr. Zcak and family of Poole slough visited Mr. Coovert's Sun day. Miss May Cook of Bethal, Ore gon, is visiting her sister, Mrs. F. Gatens. Mrs. Ed Hanlon and children of "West Yaquina took dinner at the W. C. Weber ranch Thursday. W. C. Weber made a trip to Ya quina Monday. George Selby and son. Fay, went to Waldport Tuesday. Kernville. Walter McClintock surprised the whole community Friday by bring ing a wife home with him. Some time ago he went back t't Ohio to visit his old home. While there he married. His father in law came with them. Three cattle buyers bought and drove out quite a band of cattle last week. Mr. and Mrs. Dodson will go on the Nenamossha on her return trio to Toledo. Mrs. Dodaon's mother, Mrs. Cookj will return home in company with them. Cecil Cosper, the Devils Lake postmaster and merchant, passed through enroute to Toledo. The people of this vicinitv will .'go to Devils Lake to celebrate the 4th of July. They expect a good time. D. R. Ring is here fixing to start the sawmill, which he recently bought of Parmele & Sons. Miss Myrtle Parmele, with her school, had a picnic at the mouth of the Lake la3t Monday. All re port a good time. Mrs. Dodson and her mother, Mrs. Cook, visited Mrs. Cosner Sunday. Mrs. Amon Bones visited her daughter, Mrs. Fuller, a few days this week. The shingle mill has been moved to Schocner creek and is in con nection with the cheesa factory. Mr. Hemstreet came down after Miss Nixon, who has been engaged to teach their school. The district up the river, where they i have two nice school houses, have lost their district, on account of there nut being enough children. Mrs. Esther Stephens is not wall these days. The cheese factory is turning out lots of fine cheese. Linville John Olson is building a $400 batn. Ole Olson's woman does the cook ing, but does not milk the cows, and has to be washed and dressed she is a Fireless cooker. The South Lincoln County Dairy Association was organized at Wald port May "31. , Another meeting has been called for June 14th to elect officers and discuss ways and means of promoting the interests oi the Association. The Waldport corresponednt has the right idea at last. Instead of roasing the County Court for every thing that goes wrong get after some of the mossbafcks at home, who are more to blame in most cases than the County Court. Newport The dwelling house of R. S. Ew ing, with all its contents were de stroyed by fire Sunday night about 12 o'clock. The family barely es caped in their night clothes. The fire was caused by a defective flue. Mr. and Mrs. Ewing had been in bed Out a short time when he was awakened by smoke issuing from the kitchen. When he opened the door between the sitting room and kitchen he saw the kitcheu all on fire. He gave the alarm and the fire departement responded but they had to go a half mile to Olssonville and it was too late. The loss is $3,000 with no insur ance. A $500 piano and unmo other costly furniture were among toe things destroyed. Miss Bell Ewing lost also a fine collection of pictures as well as a splendid cam era. 2 The Gerald C. Captain Charles uean. came in rnday to get out of the fog and high seas. She n on her way to Siletz bay with 800 sacks of flour and 50 salmon bar rels. The Nenamosha, which has been lying at the docks for several days, passed out Monday morning. She had on board 15 tons of freiert for Taf t. The Mirene also came into the Newport tarbor to get out of the heavy seaa. The ocean has been very rough for the last week or ten days. A great storm must be raging somewhere off shore, The memorial exercises were of more than ordinary interest this year. The services at the Presby terian church were well attended and the oration by Prof. O. V. White of the Albany Colleae was eloouent and patriotic. Th pypi-. J cises at the cemetery were con I ducted by members of the Phil Sheridan Post, assisted by the ladies i of the Relief Corps. Rev. B. C. j Black delivered a short address at I the cemetery. Newport will celebrate the Fourth of July. Arrangements are beins made to have a clam bake or water carnival on the bay and other attractions. A special effort will be made to have the biggest and best celebration ever held in the county. Already $600 have been raised for that purpose. Newport is makiLg more im provements in the way of grading streets, building sidewalks and cottages, than at any previous year. The ocean traffic is increasing every day. The L. Roscoc came in and towed out to Maoleton the sailing schoon er Coquille loaded with supplies for the Porter Bros., who are at work on the S. Tony Genini left for the logging camp last Monday. Mr. Genini has a homestead on Magee creek. Dewey Standard of Independence is visiting his mother and siater here this week. John Abbey was buying cattle in this valley this week. He drove out quite a large bunch. Mr. "Ab bey says cattle are in fine condition this Spring.. Our baseball team met on the diamond last Sunday for practice. They are working hard to be able to play a good, fast game at the urange Picnic at Eddyville June 14th. Everyone is getting ready for that day. i W. F. Wakefield is clearing some land this Spring for potatoes. Mr. Wakefield says he did not get much out of his potato crop last year, but thinks ho will do better this year. Taft The infant daughter of Abe Lo gan died the 24th. Mrs. S. F. Cook and son, Miles, are visiting'at Mr. and Mrs. Dod son's. and Mrs. Dodson expects to return home with her mother when she goes back to Independence. Amon and Lee Bones sold a . fine bunch of two and three-year-old steers to Mr. Nels'n of Indepen dence twelve in all. W. M. Dodson, T. M. McClintock and Z. M. Derricl viewed and nr. veyed the Bear creek and Schooner creek road last week. The Taft co-opeiative Etore is puttirg on a new fiont. Abe Liswig sold three fine beeves last we.k. Born, to the wife of LouU Hol ten, on the 23d. a girl. Louis says she is doing fine; says she is most large enough to say "papa" now. Jacob Johnson (milled lnmhnr fnr Abe Liswig last week. Parmele boys are working on the road for Cosper, grading with their teams. Jacob Johnson and family went to the Agency for Decoration Day. Jesse Farrin's mother was a pas senger out to Newport on the Nena mosha. Linville The farmers here et Linville are sure making a showing on their farms. There was a picnic party up from Eay View and spent Sun day. All bad a gcod time. Mr. and Mrs. Selby end daugh ter, Mrs. Edwards and little son, came in from Ona Sunday and spent the day with Ole Olson. They bought and carried home with them a fine calf. Miss lone Glines made the re turn trip from Toledo, where she was attending the teachers' insti tute, and commenced her school here Monday morning. Mr. and Mr3. Frank Huntsucker came in from Toledo Thursday. They Eav they are going to make their home here for the Summer. Saturday was road meeting and A. F. Hall had the unanimous vote, so now watch for good roads as Mr Hall is a capable man in that line. Miss Sarah Ross spent the week end with the Misses Sophia and Mary Holem. Since the last writing Miss Ella Dixon spent a number of days at Newport. Morrison's have moved the post office into the rear of the store, and with skilled knowledge will make a good postmaster. Quite a number of the Elk City set attended the anniversary dance given at the Hodge home, last inursday night and a very pleasant time was reported by those attend ing.
