He was under cross examination, in a special jury case at Maidstone, by Sergeant—afterwards Ba ron Garaow, who wished to detract from’the weight of his testimony, and who, after asking him what was his name, proceeds thus : ‘You are a builder,! believe ?’ ‘No sir, I am an architect ?’ ‘Ah! well; architect or builder, builder ur architect, they are much the same, I suppose F ‘ I beg your pardon, sir, I cannot admit that; 1 consider them to be totally different.’ ‘O, indeed, per haps you will state wherein this great difference consists V ‘An architect sir, prepares the plans, conceives the design, draws out the specifications—in short supplies the mind; the builder is merely the bricklyer or the carpenter; the build er, in fact, is the machine; the architect the power that puts the machine together and sets it going.’ ‘O, very well, Mr. Architect, that yvill do; and now, after your very ingenious distinction without a difference perhaps you can inform the court who was the architect of the Tower of BabelF And now mark the reply: ‘ There was no architect, sir, and hence the confusion.’ ft IT Petroleum V. Nasby has re cently given a statement of the terrible condition of affairs at the south—how “broolal niggers, armed with implements uv war, go roainin thro the country in bands, burnin, killin, robbin and destroy in; terrifying the peaceful planters, who are fly in to the cities for perfection. I saw more thau twenty uv these stricken men in a faro bank in Louisville, one nite,” <fcc., and. winds up with saying : *• The uiggers will starve this winter or subsist by violating the sacred injunc tion—•• Thou shalt not steel I” Oh, how much better it wood hev been, hod they continyood cz the Almity intended em, the property uv kind masters. Sich is the bitter froots of Ablisunism I Sich is the result uv Ablishnism iutermedlin with the system outo which the South wur built. When niggers wuz worth sl,- 500 per nigger, they were neither shot uor turned out to starve. They repre sentid too much money.” ftlT At the door of a certain hat store in New York hangs the sign, “ We block your hat, while you wait Lr fifty cents.” Therein entered a countryman, the other day, aud answered affirmative ly to the question of hat-blocking. The work was performed, and he was asked if he would have anything else in that line. He replied in the negative, but continued to “ hang around” as though something was unsaid. At last the clerk asked what he was waiting for. “ Wait for that fifty cents,” he said. He didn’t get it. The batter had misplaced his comma. jt-fV In one of our largest cities, a short time ago, a western editor was met by a friend, who, taking him by tho hand, exclaimed: “ 1 am delighted to see you. llow long aro you going to stay ?” *• Why, I think,” said the editor, “I shall stay while my money lasts.” “How disappointed 1 am,” said his frieud, “I hoped you were going to stay a day or two.” When Horace Greeley started tho New Yorker in New York, years ago, he endeavored to create a sensation by offering prizes for the best poems and stories. Lewis Gaylord Clark was chair man of the committee to decide these things, and awarded the SSO to a Mr. Henry W. Longfellow, a Professor in Bowdoin College, for tho poem. Mr. Spurgeon, the other day, was scolding certain of his followers who declined to interfere in politics on the ground that they were “not of this world.” This, he argued, was mere metaphor. “You might as well,” he said, “ being sheep of the Lord, decline to eat mutton-chop on the plea that it would be cannibalism.” J2F Teacher.—“ Come here, you young scamp, and get a sound spanking.” Scholar—“ You haiu’t got no right to >pank me, and the copy you set scz so.” Teacher— u 1 should like to hear you read that copy.” Scholar (reads) —“ Let all the ends thou aimest at be thy coun try's,” JEST The proper abbreviation for Alas ka is said to be L. Boston, Jan. 20,1866. Poland’s White Pine Compound. After having given it a thorough trial, we can confidently recommend Poland's IFliitc Pine Compound as a very valuable article for the cure of colds, coughs, and pulmonic complaints generally. In several cases, we have known it to give prompt relief when nil other remedies which had been tried had failed. It is an article, which, in a climate so promotive of sudden and severe colds as is that of New England, ought to be in every family; and we are sure that those who once obtain it, and give it a fair trial, will not thereafter be willing to be without it. A Valuable Medicine. Dr. Poland's irhite Pine Compound, advertised in our columns, is a suc cessful attempt to combine and apply the medicinal virtues of the White Pine bark.
