The committee which waste adjudge the prizes offered by Bliss & Sun for the largest yield of potatoes of the new varieties sent out by them, state that the Compton's Surprise lias prov ed to be the most prolific potato culti vated at present. The quality is excel lent. flavor pure, flesh white, with a uniform mealiness. The color of the akin is blue. The Early Vermont, grown alongside the Early Rose, has (proved to be earlier than that variety • and yiel -s more. Protection Against the Homy Moth. A bee raiser in New England is said to have patented an invention for the protection of bees from the attacks of the honey moth, which enters the hives at night and rifles the stores. The idea arose out of his familiarity with the daily routine not of bees only, but of hens. Hens, he observed, retire to rest early ; bees seek repose earlier still ; no sooner are they sunk in slum ber than the moth steals into their abode and devours the produce of their toil, lie has now built a stand of hives with a hen house above it. The bees first betake themselves to their dwell ing and settle themselves for the night The hens then come home to roost on their perch, and, as they take their place upon it, their weight sets some simple mechanism to work, which at once shuts down the doors of all the hives. When the flay dawns, however, the hens leave their roost, and the re moval of their weight from the perch raises the hive doors and gives egrws ( o the bees in time for their morning’s work. Worms in Horn*. The presence of norm? in the horse is marked at first by an increased ap petite, but the animal, notwithstanding the quantity of food which he con sumes, falls off in condition ; his skin is dry and hide-bound ; his coat is rough, and is not shed at the ordinary time; there is an annoying itching,! which causes the horse to rub his up per lip against the manger or on the wall; sometimes there is considerable itching about the rectum, which is in dicated by the horse rubbing his tail or rump against anything within reach. The symptoms before men tioned are such as would lead one to suspect the existence of worms, but it is only when these appear among the dung voided by the horse that we can speak with certainty on the nature of the evil. At a later period, and especi ally when the worms have develop ed in great numbers, the symptoms are very much aggravated, and the horse becomes emaciated, and suffers occasionally from eollicky pains; the flank is tucked; he walks with diffi •Culty, and a fatal termination wilt, sometimes ensue. As to treatment, a dose of aloes (aloes, six drachms ; powtlered ginger, two drachma; treacle, sufficient to make a pill), may be given, which has often the effect of expelling the worms without having resource to any other treatment. If this fails, divide six ounces of iron filings into twelve parts, and make into as many balls, with sufficient linseed meal and treacle, and give one every morning until finished ; then give it dose of aloes, as mentioned, which will cause the expulsion of any worms which remain in the horse’s intestines. Rirfilt of FowlNt The recent publication of a new edi tion of Tegetmeier’s Poultry Book, has called out a lengthy review of the book by the London Saturday Review, from which we condense the following as Tegetmeier’s opinion of the different breeds now principally kept in Eng land : Two data are given from which to estimate the value of a fowl for the table or market, • A table fowl should be all breast, with short limbs and small bones.’’ Also, that fowls are in perfection for the table only before they have attained maturity.’ There fore a cross of the Malay, with its long, snaky neck, and plump’, high flavored breast, with the short-legged Dorking, will produce an extraordinary table fowl. He objects to the’ Span ish on account of their dark legs, so obj«‘ctionable in the j market. The (lames have the draw back of a yellow skin, though the flesh is well flavored. The Polish and Ham burgh, though excellent in flavor, are small in size and are delicate to roar The Cochin develops the leg at the ex- I nense of the breast, but, although n little coarse, is a good table fowl for home um', but not for shipping. Mated with the large French breeds, the cross is white skinned, of good size, and at-1 tains maturity rapidly. The Brahma is the largest and finest of domestic fowls; with full, broad, prominent breast; a back short and broad be tween the shoulders and across the hips; a curved, slender neck, and wings small and light, The tme Brahma is a good fattener, a first-rate table fowl, early ripe, and at maturity of enormous proportions. A cross be- tween the Brahma and Dorking is also a profitable market bird, being less impa tient of restraint in feeding grounds , than the pure Dorking. The lloudau is put m equal rank with the Brahma and Dorking as a meritorious fowl. Large, heavy, small boned, and a minimum of offal, they are hardy, and mature rapidly. The chickens are fit for the table at four months, and the flesh is white and fine: “On the i whole, as a few hardy breeds are better | than many of various merit and de grees of constitution, we should gather from Tegetmeier, as well as from our own observations, that Brali ; mas, Dorkings and Houdans are the best investment, taken all in all, for ! the poultry yard.” Hoasrhold 11 i n 1«. Food fob Invalids. —Miss Daisy Eyebright, in the Country Gentleman, expatiates so admirably on the topic of food for invalids that we uro sure our readeri, and the fairest portion of them at least, will be pleased to see the en tire article reproduced. This is what Miss Daisy says: “ There is no more desirable accom plishment for women than to know how to make invalids comfortable, and to prepare tempting dishes for them, for I food cooked by the hand of a wife, mother or sister, possesses a sweeter relish than the mere component parts : can give ; and has frequently a restora tive power which money cannot supply. I I therefore propose to give various reci ! pes which will enable readers to pre pare relishing and toothsome dishes fur those who are ill, and to vary the food as selection or symptoms may i render expedient.” Farinaceous food, jellies and meat broths, are the most, nutritious pre parations for invalids; ami such food as the patient can iake without pro duoing distress and pain in the digest ive organs is the kind which will give the most strength to the system. Sago Gruel. —Take three table spoonfuls of sago, and wash in cold water ; then add one quart of boiling hot milk, and boil for twenty minutes; sweeten and flavor with lemon peel, or ; a tablespoonful of brandy. Ground Rice Gruel. — one , tablcspoonful of ground rice, rubbed | smooth with cold water in a pint and a half of milk, with a bit of cinnamon ami lemon peel. Sweeten slightly, or season with salt. Nil Desi'erandum.— A real health!/ I min or woman, is a rarity ; and what wonder < when we realize that it. is the j custom to overload the stomach, and i then produce chronic disease by the use of spirituous liquors, “ Tonics,” “Appetizers,” “Restoratives,” etc. Having first produced disease by in discretion, the victim wonders why “nothing does him good.” Just so; I and the reason is that they all, or nearly all, find a basis in alcohol—or poison. Tn ;dl thus discouraged, we can conscieiitioiiniv «'<y. *- make one more trial.” Discard spirituous medi i cities, and give Nature a chance, aid ing her in the struggle by using one of ■ her own pure and unadulterated herb remedies, in the shape of Vinegar Bit tees.
