The Indian reservations in the
southwest part of Oklahoma, occu
pied by the Kiowa, Comanche and
Apache tribes, will be opened to
homesteaders August 6. The coun
try comprises about 30,000 quarter
sections. After the allotments to
the Indians and the reservations of
the government of practically all the
good lands, there are left for home
steads 13,000 quarter sections and
for this indifferent, and much of it
worthless land 125,000 people are en
deavoring to get each a quarter sec
tion.
Is there any likelihood that the boys
will become web-footed, like unto a
duck, from staying in the water so
m uch?
Prescott was enlivened a week ago
Tuesday by the advent of 1000 pic
nickers from St. Paul, mostly mail
carriers.

M. A. Frissell has sold his Turtle
Lake Bugle to Dr. I. A. Averill who
will blow it hereafter. The Bugle is
about eighteen months old and has
improved with age. It is probable
that it wi’l some more.

The school census in most towns
and cities here and about shows a pre
ponderance of girls. In this city the
number of girls between the ages of 4
and 20 is 298 while tlie number of boys
between those limits is but 257, show
ing an excess of 41 girls. The census
of Glenwood shows an excess of 10
girls, and Spring Valley the same;
Trlmbelle reports one boy and two
girls. If tlxis state of things pro
gresses the legislature should be called
in extraordinary session to pass some
reform statutes to even things up.

Word has been received here of
the death of George Shafer by
drowning in the Mississippi while
clam hunting. George had grown
up to manhood in our town and had
many friends here who mourn his
loss.
Harry Wilson has bought the C.
B. Musser farm.
Mr. Morrow lost a fine horse last
week.
Julie Wadsworth visited in St.
Paul several days last week.
Mr. Gorham has sold his farm to
Mr. Nelson of Warren.
Mercury has rim up to io.| several
days within the past week. Wed
nesday it stood at 10S, and crops are
damaged seriously by heat and bugs.
Wednesday afternoon a severe
wind and sand storm with a little
rain passed up the valley, doing
much damage to grain in the shock.

lina was sold, standing in the forest,

The badly decomposed body of John.
Mohr, a Stillwater baker, was found
hanging from a limb in the woods in
the outskirts of the village of Houl
ton, St. Croix county, last Tuesday
week.
