Xleatons Wby.it Should Not be Ko pcaled. Southern Farmer. We havo noticed for several days past, in the various papers that come to us, that an tfiort is bt-ing made by some of the mem bers of our Legislature to repeal the "dog law." This speaks'very bud fur those who advocate this move, and should promptly Le nipped in the bud. The fact it, the said doc law is not, and uev er has been, strict enough. If we had a strict dog law, and officers of the right kind to see that it is carried out to the letter, our far mers would be more prosperous in raising sheep. There is little or no encouragement for a farmer to purchase fine breeds of sheep to have ttem destroyed by hordes of worthless- curs which now in fest our country. The law might ha modified so as to exempt one dog to each farm house from tax ation; this would allow each far met to keep a good watch dog, but not of the sheep-killing spe cies. Why not get Scotch Colly ehepherd doge? Such would pro tect the sheep as well as other property on the farm. Most of our farmers now have a start in the finer breed of sheep, and think it would be a shameful act on the part of our legislators to repeal the law protecting them, and leave them open to the ravages of Mr. Cur. No, gentlemen, don't do any such thing if you entertain the slightest hopes of taking a seat in our next Tennes see Legislature. Milking. "Do not chancre milkers too often," writes a subscriber to the New England Farmer. "This is a matter that farmers generally make too little ac count of, especially in the busy reasons of the year, as in plant ing, hoeing, haying and harvest ing, any one who can most con veniently be spared from the work in hand being usually sent to do the milking. Now it fre quently happens that one has a boy or cheap hand hired through the 'hurry' of haying, and he is frequently dispatched to the pasture for the cows; perhaps he may have done farm work before, but has had nothing to do about taking care of cows. They know at once he is a Btran fjcr and of course must not ex press too much freedom in mak ing his acquaintance, and a mong their withholdings the important thing is that of their milk. Should he be kind and gentle in his handling of the cows, they must first find him out, and in doing this it is at the expense of a greater or less fehnnkage m the flow ot the milk. In changing this help frequently, you overlook a large item of cost to yourself. Bet ter send the best man you have, if he is already familiar with your cows and their foibles; it will more than pay you for the loss of his work in the held. In this connection let me urge the necessity of regular hours for doing tins work, and you will find it will pay for its- obser vance. Animals, as well as in rlividnals, form habits, and good ones are vastly the best in both cases. The maiority ot people eating fruit, eat the fckin. Their chil- dren eat it in the same manner, and seem never to have been taught that the skin of fruit be it apple, peach, pear, plum, or grape ebouid never be eaten, es pecially it uncooked. FruiUkins ri o difficlut of digestion that thore is probably Dot more than one stomach in a hundred capable of performing the difBclut task. The skins are to fruit what 6hells are to nuts, hidca to animals, and husks to grain. To oblige or al low a child to eat his apple or pear unpeeled is unkind and wrong, far it ia no question ot daintiness, but of health. While Mary Jane Aslam'a corpse was laid out for a wake in Liverpool, and while oil the in mates of tho house had adjourned to a tavern to gain strength for tho vigil, a candle upset near the body, which soon fet the house on on fire, burmd the corpse, and caused i.ite;ise alarm in th- neigh-boihood.
