HALLIDAY BROTHERS, GENERAL AGENTS Thx rash Massao 'Journal' actually ro marks that it is absolutely ashamod that Cairo with so many great men to sound its praise in the political world, should be poverty stricken in the way of Republi can editor; that the 'Sun' Is "a source of 'disgust to its own townsmen and the Ro 'publican party of tbe district; that its ' circulation and influence is of no conse quence whatevor; that its editor has 1 more -ears than brains." The 'Journal' is unjust. The 'Sun' is as sprightly as It can be it is as good a papor as its pat ronage will justify it in being, and cer tainly its Republicanism is sound. It takes down every party nostrum with a relish, and It swears by the administration. Whatmorecouldbeexpectedot.it? Must the Sub' and Buixttik be abused by their Republican cotemporaries ? Tux votes of the presidential electors of the Southern States were nearly all cast on Wednesday last against President Grant, and in favor of Governor Hen dricks. Under the circumstances, this, was a very ungracious act, and demonstrated clearly that tbe dominant sentiment at tbe South is not prepared to practice the doc trine of forgiveness, which it so loudly preaches. Tho Southern people, who laio- ly were engaged in a war, waged with the avowed object of destroying tho Union, have-been claiming since they were de feated, that tbe Unionists of tho. country should forget the past, and in forgiveness bury tbe rancor of tbatdisastrous conflict, Tbe Democrat and Liberals of the North, have advocated this doctrine, believing that it was wise statesmanship to let the dead past of the war of, c6ssionlury its dead. When Mr. Grooloy died, and tbe electors of certain Southern slates were askod to forget their hatred of Gen. Grant, and, since thoy could not elect a man after their own heart, to make Grant the president of tbe whole people, they refused to consent, and by voting in the manner they did, have said as plainly as an aot can speak : "We can ' not forgive; we have no amnesty for the 'party from the hands of which amnesty ' can come to us ; we take but do not give ; 'we preach mercy, but if we were 'the victors we would have no mercy." If their act of voting for Gov. Hendricks could be tortured into any thing but a surly blow at President Grant, a spiteful expression of tbe hatred in which the Democrats of the South hold tbe poople of the North, it might pass without com ment; but, in loosing tho opportunity to do a gracious act to meet tbe president half-way in his policy of conciliation and oblivion the representatives of the South ern people In the electoral college mani fested a spirit which is indicative of tbe intolerance with which they would rule if they could procure the success of a party In which their policy would dominate.
