The Democrata of Pope county havlnp
determined to Issue a weekly Democratic
Rnmpaljrn paper, the flnt number lias
mmlc Ita appearance. The new paper Is
called Tho Tope County Jtrfwr, and
In Its salutatory Fare:
A long established custom makes It
nooeMary, that, In appearing before the
public an the conductors of a newspaper,
we should write an arttole introductory
announcing tho course we tdiall pursue
as editors. Rut we shall have little to
say, preferring to let our words sjeiik for
themselves, and our actions and our
papeieacu week be the criterion by wWch
to Judge ot the tuture.
We are Democratic ami Intend publish
ing a Democratic paper. We expect to
use our best exertions In defending ilu
great and time-honored principles ot that
party, as taught by .leflerrn, Madiwn.
Monroe and Jackson In daj s gone by,
and as advocated and defended byTlldeu,
Hendricks and a legion ot olher noble,
patriotic reformers of the present day.
lu thus pre-enting ourselves lit au al
most new and untried avocation, we
think we do not underrate the difficulties
that tut-round us; but having an apprecia
tion ot these difficulties, we trust we will
be alle to meet and overcome tliem; and
we preume that all those with whom we
have the pleasure of being personally ac
quainted know that It has never been our
tnotto to engage in any enterprise and
abandon it lefore ascertaining the final
And, further, we think they will' not
doubt the truth of our assertion, that we
will never swerve from w hat we consider
to be our duty, and will be fcarle in de
nunciation ol what we believe to be not
The Hi:roK.H.K, as a campaign paper,
will labor zealously to advance the in
terests ot Tilden and Hendricks In their
election to the presidency and vice-presidency
cf the I'nited States, nnd will
also give its earnest support to the entire
Democratic ticket. As iu name indicates,
we will not hesitate to expose fraud and
corruption, when found in any political
party, and thus, with the exposure of
euch crimes, strive to inaugurate a better
order of things.
This, the Centennial year of American
indeK-ndence,ls the most remarkable.and.
we might say, the most unhappy eoch in
the political history of our nation, when
the party In power winks at crime and
would lain let the ferpctrasors go acquit,
fco long as they show lldelity to said par
tya party whereto find an honest offi
cial U the exception and not the rule,
and where the executive head at the na
tional capital, It not in absolute collusion
with the recently convicted official
thieves, must, at Uat, have been cogni
zaut cd the acts of the criminals, and
tailed to have them Drought to justice
until forced to do o by the investigation
inaugurated by one ot the exceptions
above relerred to and encouraged by all
honest citizens ot tbe country.
But the people of our nation can no
longer be hoodwinked aud deceived by
the false promises of the political leaders
of a party rotten to the core a party
that stands to-day as accessory to the
crime of plunging our once proud and
glorious Republic into a fratricidal war,
thereby creating almost Inconsolable dis
tress all over the land, leaviug tho nation
distracted, its citizens burtbened with a
large w ar debt, no administration of oue
portion ot the Republic bylaw, the con
stitution being over-ridden and military
despotism alone prevailing. But the
people of our country, in their power
and good sense, are now moving in the
great matters of reform, and the Ides of
November next will record the success
ful election of one of the greatest. It not
the greatest, statesman that ever was
chosen to the chief magistracy ot the na
tionour noble standard bearer Samuel
J. Tilden, the great ring-breaker of New
York, who will at once prove himself to
be the ring-breaker of the nation upon
his induction into the presidential chair.
Then, Indeed, will reform be insti
tuted In every department ot our govern
ment, law and order once more prevail
everywhere within iu borders, aud miss-
called Rcpublicanims, with all Its rotten
ness and hell-boru fallacies, w ill be ouce
more hurled to the dust, and true na
tional Democracv again arise trium
