1 know In refurrnoe lu tbe facta liwolved.
Vnv day during l he Sullivan trial a
lawyer came to uie ruanilt-Htlinf great
earutueA, and aaid adieu ot liUliad
reveled to tiiia tbe fact that a plan was
on loot to Steal the body ot Abraham
Liuoolu. I do not consider It proper to
aute anything more In reference to this
plan or lu objects than to say it had no
connection with pol.t.c. but waa aimply
crime, and to accomplish criiauial and
mercenary enda.
I aked peruilwion to state the facts to
Uobert Liiicoln, and, upon consultation
withhiin. wrote to John T. Hiuart. of
hpringtleld, who had been prominently
oouueciexl with tins Lincoln Monument
Ao lation, stating simply what 1 had
tieard, and expressed no opinion upon
the (acts, but anggestt-d that p rti.ips
the slfichteat Intiiuaiion of danger ought
to induce proper safeguards, if the txwly
was in a poxiuon where it could possibly
be exposed to such a scheme. The next
day brought to my knowledge the fact
that any imblic guard or open precau
tion would simply postone the attempt,
and therefore, upon tn belief that tbe
otBotrs Ihemselvca would catch the par
ties in the act, it was thougtit best t3 let
Uiem do it.
1 tiierelore wrote to Mr. 6tuart again,
telling him that the plan bad been ma
tured to catch the perpetrators in the
act. but while this was promised snd in
deference to it our precautions thould be
secret, still they should bv so effectual
as to leave no danger of the succesof
the thieve, gome ten days then elapfed,
the details of which I purposely omit,
but tbe rvsult was the parties got ready
and selected election night because pub
lie attention would theii be absorbed.
Up to this time all I had done in the
matter was at the n quest ot Hubert Lln
ooln, to Induce the precautious at Spring
Held, above sta'ea. iieatoaiKea me, as
he did not wih to act in the matter, to do
anything I might consider prudenc and
proper. He c me to tne tlie day of the
nich- the parties were going, and said lie
wa fearful generally about what would
be dose, and the result, and I suggested
a Klnier Washburn waa in town, and (
placed full reliance both in IiIh discretion
and integrity, thnt we should consult
ThAl aftersooo Mr. Washburn wai con
ulud bitiiutx r . but 1 w.m no' able to
be present, and that night, after this con
sultation Mr. Washburn informed me
that the parties had gone to 8pringfi 1J
on the evening train. This was the first
information I had that th parties were
going at a ri finite time or that they had
gone. If I had known certainly that they
were going. I should-- have' procured
Washburn to follow them at once, but
then It wa too late.
I begged Wahburn to go down ti e
next morning, but he expressed reluc
tance, aa he had no authority, and it tuigl t
ee.ni like interfering. I told Uim 1 waa
authorized by Kihert to act, and urged
tutu in every way I could go to Hpringbeld
on the moruiug train, lie dually prom
ised that, alter voting at the 1 weiity.
aeiond street station, he would take the
Chicago aud A Iton train if lie could, and
it he tailed he would report to me, and I
said 1 would get a special engine for him.
Alter leaving mm I became teariui mat
n thinking tbe mitter over Ms disincli
nation to interfere might finally prevail,
and I weut to th Twenty-second street
Station a few minutes alter tbe polls
opened and waited until V, for the pur
p.j of placing in ins iiuiki n wruien re
4U st on U-half ot Kobert and myself for
mm to take charge of the matter iu con
nrction with Mr. lynvll.
Missinir him tnere. as he. in fact, voted
mar tle4'almer House. I went to Uob-
it's house, and, after beeomlnz satUned
hat he had gone on the 9 o'clock train.
we telerraphed him at Bloomington. en
route, to take cha geof the matter, aud
we would Hack mm in whatever he nngnr
lo. Tbe object of this was that he might
feel authorized to act as far aa we could
authorize him.
That night W ashburn telegraphed me
that the parties had esca-d, but al-
hnttgh temporarily bam l. he and Mr.
Tyrrell worked with skill and caution.
and tinally caught the men.
PioiKMly in connection wttn tnis matter
has been trylntr 'o make any money or
aftlx any conditions to their work, or In
any way secure any compensation. The
onlv money that has been paid out is a
matter ot two aoiiara per aay in some
parties connecttxl with the case, who are
m . . t . t.S
poor, ana oottui noi give tneir wue wilb-
out compensation.
The conduct of the officers has been
such as would met with I tie approval of
til. provided they knew the lacta in
volved. The arrest havingr tn made.
I employed Hon. Charles tl. Iteed to go
to Kpringtield to take charge of the pros.
tcution. I did this because I thought
inv feelings in the matter might mi
guide me, and I knew him to be one of
the best prosecutors In the country.
When all the tacts are known, the
srentlemen I have named will be entitled
to. and will dnuhtl.s receive the thanks
of all who loved Mr Lincoln, and who
wish that his ashes may rest In fx o.
