Republican NominaticHS for 18S0 and vre appeal to the unprejudiced reader to consider what it is. Does the local government and policy of the ruling power in these states have nothing to do with it ? It is sometimes charged that republicans are enemies to the south, but does it not annear from the crominent corous, and that is Komethiot; to be rir , . , . grateful for. It has one fault as a tacts presented by this contrast, letter accepting a democratic nomina tion for the presidency, it is not a democratic letler. Its platitudes are the platitudes which democrats some times preach, but which they never practice. These are tbe doctrines which democrats do not believe, though they often profess them. If the letter was addressed to tue party which created and adopted the great war amendments, which saved the union, and which has built up the country into a new and great prosperi ty, there would be some fitness in many of its deciaiatiocs. But when we reflect that it is addressed to the party which fought to destroy tue union, which in the northern branch es resisted at every step th9 progress of the war amendments, and which fought with equal zeal every; step of the resumption policy which brought our great prosperity, the letter becomes a mass of incongruities and absurdities. A VOICE FROil TAMMANY. New York Star (Tammany Dem.) Gen. Hancock's acceptance is a trum pet blast, terse, resonant, electrifying. There is no equivocation, no word- juggling. The author does not rehash his party platform into a tedious essay, nor wander on into verbose discussion of minor issues, which, in the end, must seek solution from congress, not from the executive. THE STATE CANVASS. In another column will be found an article copied from the editorial columns of the "W" aco (Texas) Tele phone, which, to the ordinary ob server, contains a wholesome lesson. A contrast is there presented be- tween the States of Texa3 and Kansas, which may be studied with profit by the people of the entire south. With a territory less than half tbat of Texas, Kansas has, in the last ten year3, trebled its popu lation, while Texas has barely doubled. The climate of Texas is as good, if not better, than that of Kansas, yet the latter has quadru pled its taxable wealth, while the increase in the former has been nothing remarkable. There are reasons for these things, a,nd some of them are frankly given by the Texas paper. The su periority of the Kansas school system is undoubtedly one of them. No man who thinks anything of his family is going to settle in a country where he cannot have good 1 1 . n schools, so ions as he can hnd a place where they do have them. A man who expresses opinions on the question of free schools or immigra tion, such as are attributed to the governor of Texas by this Waco paper, could no more be elected governor of Kansas, than ho could navigato tho Atlantic ocean on a Who would suppose that within the plumed, epauletted, yellow sashed, brass buttoned, martial exterior of a soldier whose hand is always dallying with his constant weapon, the bayo net, there could exist the great states manship which has evolved plati tudinous maxims of such milky mild nesfc? A "MODEL CONFESSION OF TRUTH." Louisville Courier-Journal (Dem.) Gen. Hancock's letter of acceptance, which we present this morning, is a model confession of faith, explicit, di rect and to the purpose. It leaves nothing to be said on the subjects named. The republicons may wrestle and wrestle with it, but the more they do the worse off they will find them selves. There is another point, too, which they can not get away with; it is Hancock's letter, not Black's or Tilden's, as they have been pretendiDg it would be. From first to la&tii breathes the same spirit, speaks the same language, which rank throngh those famous orders to which the boI-dier-state8man owes his present posi tion. Now let the work go bravely cn. "INANE AND POINTLESS." Philadelphia Press (Rep.) A more inane and pointless letter could not well have been written. Who can tell whether Hancock sus tains the national or the federal ide of the republic? Who can say whether be advocates or opposes uniimueu sil ver? Who can say whether ho ap proves or resistts paper inflation? V ho can determine whether he favors or condemns the protection of Ameri can labor ? Who can indicate whether he has even tbe germ -of an idea for the regulation of the civil service? His letter will be searched in Vain for a clue as to whether he has any thoughts on any of these questions. ' If this is statesmanship, heaven save the mark. NOT PARTISAN. New York Worid Dem. There is not in General Hancock' letter a single expression which can fairly be called the expression of a partisan. I'here is nothing in it which any critic can object to as coming with an ill grace from a soldier in active command, bound to obey the lawful orders of his puperiors without regard to their political opinions. And yet General Hancock's simple direct state ment of what all democrats esteem to be elementary truths concerning tbe nature of our government is the mo3t formidable arraignment that could be devised of the republican party, and of the sectional spirit and the arbitrary methods in which that party The Weakly county democrats ap pointed delegates to the state conven tion and instructed them to support no man for governor who is in favor of paying interest upon any part of tbe state debt, except upon bonds held by Mrs. Polk, or by educational institu tions. The democrats of Hamblen county are for compromising the differences of the party and iustruct their dele gates to vote for Marks. The Franklia county delegatio n 1 o the democratic state convention is in structed to vote for Marks. -A'--.'...-r.
