It i3 surprising how little we
hear now of the familiar cry of
"fraud" which was the stock in
trade of our democratic friends, up
to within the last six months. Gen.
Hancock even, fails to mention it in
his letter of acceptance. It i3 true
they had Mr. Tilden on the stand at
a democratic meeting held in New
York last week, and in a few feeble
sentences, he tried to stir up the ins
dignation of an outraged democ
racy, but it wouldn't stir and there
was no public outcry against
it.' Ihe speakers of the evening,
such as Speaker Randall and J.
Randolph Tucker, failed to mention
it and the old man wa3 forced to sit
still and listen to their platitudes.
Can it be possible that the party is
going through this canvass without
improving so good an opportunity
to denounce "fraud?" Or is it
possible that they have discovered it
to bo a two-edged sword ?
One of the strongest campaign
documents for the republicans is the
monthly public debt statement,
which is sent out through the asso
ciated press reports. Last month's
report shows a decrease of more
than five millions for the month of
July. So long as the republicans go
on decreasing the debt at that rate
the people will be satisfied with
what they are doing and will submit
to no change. .

friends "will meet in convention at
Nashville and wrestle vrith the gus
bernatorial question, and will de
cide whether they will make the
state debt question an issue in this
campaign, or whether they will
compromise their differences by ig
noring it altogether. There will
be a strong party there opposed to
the payment of any of that part of
the debt created 'in the construction
of railroads. There will also be a
strong party in favor of an honest
settlement of the debt; ; Which will
be the strongest is hard to tell. '

conference to be held in thi city nex
Thursday, August 5th, are about com
plete by the national com mitt ee. The
gathering promitea to be one of the
most interesting, as it will, no doubt,
be one of the ino&t important, ever
held iu the history of the party. The
mausgers of the campaign, desiring to
bring together the prominent men of
the psrty, including the candidates for
president and vice president, to reach
the fullest understandicg cf the prin
cipal aim.3 to be kept in view in the
campaign, eent notices to Ieadiog re
publicans in all the northern states,
and have received assurances from a
sufficient number of thosa invited to
ehow that the idea of holding a con
ference meets with general approval,
and that, it will b8 very largely at
tended. Gen. James A. Garfield has
sent word that he will attend. He
will leave hisbome at Mentor, O .next
.Tuesday af.ernoou on a special train,
accompanied by Senator John A. .Lo
gan, of Illinois, Gen. Ben. Harrison,
of Indiana, Judge Alphonse Taft, of
Ohio, the Hon. Chas. G. Williams, of
Wisconsin, and the Hon. Omer D.
Conger of Michigan. The party will
reach Buffalo on Tuesday night. Here
they will be received by Gov. A. B.
Cornell and several members of his
staff, Lieuteuant Governor George G.
Hoskins, the Hon. Frank Hiscock, ex-
Governor Jewell, the Hon. Levi P. j
Morton, Senator Robertson, and the
Hon. Richard Crowley. The stay in
Buffalo will be necessarily short, and
it ia not probable that General Gar
field will have any opportunity to
speak there beyond acknowledging:
the welcome of the crowds that are
sure to receive him. On Wednesday
morning at 6:30 o'clock a special train
of two parlor cars will take the party
from Buffalo. On the way to New
York brief stops will be macie at Bata
via, R-chester, Lyons, Syracuse,
Rome, Utica, Little Fall, 8c eut-cta-dy.
Albany, Hudson and Poughkeep
eie. It is known that the Garfield
and Arthur clubs in these places have
all declared their intention of greeting
th candidate as he passes through the
ditlerent cities. General Garfield will
not, it is believed, mabeauy speeches
on the way, but will make some of his
traveling companions the spokesmeu
to acknowledge the greetings of the
republicans who will turn out to mett
him and cheer him by the way. The
train is expected to arrive at the Grand
Central depot at 9 o'clock Wednesday
evening. There will be no formal re
ception there. Gen. Garfield will go
to the Firth Avenue hotel, where he
will remain until after the conference
on Thureday.

be the executive committee of the na
tional committee, including ex-Gov.
