GROUND BROKEN.—Ground has been broken for the new Union Scboolhouse. STARTID.—Gen. Barrett started his sur veying crews for Devil's Lake on Tuesday. He has a large contract there. A S I O S a a Smit from this place 3 4 0 0 0 rats besides a large quantity of other furs. IN BLOSSOM.—The apple trees in this vi cinity are loaded with bloom. The sea son has been very favorable, and a fine yield may be expected. CxoexxxY.—Mrs. Tilton has a lot offrom crockery, all kinds, which will be sold cheap. H. B. FURS.—On Friday fifty bales, weighing ten thousand pounds, of the Hud. son Bay Company's fun were shipped from this place to England. RAM.—On Monday and Monday night a fine warm rain fell, doing an untold amount of good. More rain is falling to day, and the weather is cloudy. POP.—A pop manufactory has been started in upper town. It is said to turn out an article as good as any that has been imported. Kraus & Zimmerman are theon proprietors. Dmo.—The St. Paul Pioneer, speaking of some fat cattle, says they were "hard to beat." We also find some occasionally here that are hard to b'eat. APPLES.—M. E. Nixon last week shipped to St. Paul forty barrels more of nice sound green apples. St. Cloud Is rapidly becoming a wholesale point. QUARTZ MILL—It is reported that Capt. Newson, of St. Paul, is making arrange ments to nse the power at Libby's saw mill, Watab, to drive a quarts mill. We give the rumor for what, it is worth, which is probably not much. No. 1.—The ladies say there is nothing to be compared to the Royal Standard Al pacas, for which Pickit & Abbott have the agency in St. Cloud. IMPROVING.—All kinds of business in town are improving, notwithstanding that this is the farmers' busy season. The heavy amount of government and Hudson Bay Company's transportation done adds materially to the trade of the town. Build ing operations are also being carried on extensively. BOOKS.—Parties wishing to order books can do so by calling at Mrs. FarwelTs store. Orders will be made out on Mondays Catalogues of all the principal publishers on hand, from which selections can besouring made. 8ow PLOW.—We have seen the model of anew snow plow, invented by Major Murphy, H. T. Daendels and Dr. Schul ten. They have filed on it for one year at the Patent Once. The idea of the plow is entirely new, and the invention bids fair to be a success. A practical test will be made next winter. VANDALISM.—Some unprincipled scoun drel has cut down a eouple of the grand old pines which grow along the ravine. They are worth more than money to thegaiters place, and the wretch who wilfully cut them down would steal if opportunity of fered. A watch is being kept, and if the offender is caught he will be made to suffer severely. GOOD LAUDS.—The tracts in Stearns and Pope counties, advertised elsewhere, are all first quality, lands, and offer good in •*tments. To parties wishing to purchase vhole lot a heavy reduction will be HOTEL Bonus.—In this week's Issue will be found the official advertisement of the City Council asking proposals for building the new hotel and taking the $12,600 bo nus. Hers is a good chance for some cap italist to invest his money to the very best advantage. A first class hotel at St Cloud would be crowded summer and winter. There would be no lack of patronage—good paying patronage. And besides the bonus is an item well worth considering. We ex pect the Council will have an abundance of proposals from which to select. RIAPSBS A Mownas.—Rosenberger Bros, have just received a lot of the well known McCormick reapers and mowers. These machines need no commendation. Their unparalleled success is ail the en dorsement that could be asked for. Farm ers who have tried them will use no oth er. A largo ttock of stoves and general also been received by the hardware has same firm. RIMOVAI.—J. W. Metsroth has removed his clothing store np opposite the Central House. He will make suits in the latest Paris and London styles—guaranteed to be satisfactory.? itocn. of ready made clothing and gent's famishing goods is complete, and he would ask a call from purchasers. See advertisement. MSfA doer Using bringt the mtrckont'sgooeb 9 the evnttinttutieto/theemmer. wsssseasasssssssBBemm BOARD or TEAM.—On Friday eveaing an adjourned meeting of the Board was held. Col. Kerr and Wm. Powell, from the Committees appointed to looate the road to Kling's, reported that they had thoroughly examined the ground over which it was to pass, and found the most feasible crossing of the marsh to be on the line surveyed for a State Road by Messrs. Garrison, Campbell and Hicks, and from the bluff beyond the marsh by the town ship Hue to the corner of Kling's fence. The distance actoss the marsh was 495 yard*, which would require about 1,000 cubio yards of road to be made. Th* e»nl» necessary to be taken from .the bluff would be sufficient to make the road. After get ting down about a foot in the marsh the bottom is hard pave. With a ditch on ei ther side, an excellent road could be made. A committee consisting of H. C. Wait, W. Powell and J. E. Hayward was appoint edto definitely looate the road, procure the right of way, and make an accurate es timate of expenses. They were authorised to incur such expenses as might be neces sary, including the employment of a civil engineer, and were required to report at the next meeting. On motion of Mr. Bridgman it was re solved that the City Counoil be requested to appropriate the necessary amount for the construction of the roai, and the Sec retary was directed to communicate this resolution to that body. The Committee on Manufactures was in creased by the addition of L. A. Evans, J. E. Hayward and Wm. Powell. The Beard then adjourned until next Tuesday evening, when they will meet at their rooms over Pickit & Abbott's store. ARRESTED FOR MCRDKR.—A man named Uzeb Perine was arrested last week st Al bon, in Wright county, on the charge of having murdered his wife's child. It seems that the child died suddenly on the night of the 10th, and was buried by Perine alone. Suspicions were aroused, and about ten days afterwards the body was disinterred, and a coroner's jury return ed a verdict that the child came to its death from strangulation at the hands of Perine. He was arrested and confined in the jail at Montcello to await trial at the June term of the District Court. The foro goiag foots we learn from Hon. H. L. Gor don, of this city, who returned from Mon cello this week, having been engaged to defend Perine. PSRSOVAL. —On Tuesday we had a call Warren Adley, the proprietor of the Lake House, at Osakis, one of the best houses in the upper country. Mr. L. Kelles, of Sauk Centre, returned yesterday from a trip eastward. Gov. McTavish, of the Red River Settle ment, passed up en Friday. Jos. Goyette arrived home a few days aince from an extended tour through sever al of the Western States. We had a call from Mr. E. H. Atwood, of Maine Prairie, who reports the crops in that section as looking very well. A great er breadth of ground, by at least one quarter, than last year has been sown. M.D. Cambell, of Maywood, was in town Tuesday. He says the saw mill recent ly destroyed there will be re-built. Among the arrivals at the Central House this week we note: W. L. Hardesty and W. J. Christie, wife and servants, Hudson Bay Territory J. B. Atkinson, Forest City W. L. Wakefield, Crow Wing Hon. H. T. Welles, Minneapolis Judge Emmett, J. R. Nicols and W. K. Nelson, St. Paul H. Easton, Owatonna S. B. Pollard, Man kato M. W. Griffin, Battle Creek, Mich. H. Cohort, St. Loais E. Piatt and wife, New York: D. Coaray, Canada A. Mc Carroll, Harrisburg J. Merry and W. H. Brysen, Maine P. Bixbee, Stephens Point, Wis. J. McDougall, Salem, N. Y. J. Z. Merrian, Dubuque C. Hall and wife, Chi cago. A E S A A S Mr Eira Briggs, of Little Falls, we learn that the quantity of maple sugar manufactured in the Upper Mississippi country this sea son was very large—at least one-third more than last year. The quality, in general, it not quite so good as usual. The sugar there is mostly made by Indians and half breeds, who granulate and pack it in birch bark cases. They never make syrup from anv but the "last run" of sap, which is not good for sugar, unless upon a special order. Mr. Briggs says that last year they sold at their store six tons of maple sug r, almost all for consumption in that part of the country. Speaking of maple syrup during the warm weather, Mr. says that if left for six months or so after Finn.—The nouso of Mr. McKinney, on this process has commenced, the syrup will Maine Prairie, WM burned last Thursday. I besweeter, thicker and clearer than even Mr. McKinney and wife were both absent, .made. —.= and when he came in sight of the building at noon it was all in a blaze. Nothing be yond a eouple of trunks was saved. The origin of the fire is unknown. The build ing was anew one. Loss about $1,600 partially insured. when first Th fermentation seems to rid it of all impurities, and it comes from the barrel like "golden drip." This has been tried for a number of years with per fect success. The information will be of benefit to many. SASH, DOORS, &C—F. H. Dam calls the attention of the people of the upper coun try to his facilities for manufacturing doors, I blinds, sash, mouldings, casings, &c. His factory is provided with all the best,, latest and most improved machinery, enabling him to do the best work at low rates. Price lists sent on application. Boors ASD SHOES CHEAP.—M. E. Nixon has a very large stock of men's and boys', and women's and misses' boots, shoes and which will be sold very low. Call anisee. CHICAGO POST.—We would call attention *o the notice of the further enlargement of this enterprising sheet. The Pott has add* ed column after column until it has now ten to each page. It is an able, spicy, readable sheet. —To persons living in the counties to the south and south-west of this, who have need of legal services, we would commend Cbas. B. Howell, Esq., of Geeenleaf. Mr. H. is especially well qualified to take oharge of land matters, as he was for a number of years engaged in the General Land Office at Washington. He will be found prompt and reliable. ALL THI Tins.—Think over it in your waking moments, make it the subject of your dreams, that Pickit & Abbott sell all kinds of dress goods, clothing, boots, I shoes, etc., cheaper than the cheapest. This advice is for your own benefit. ROUHD TABU.—Attention is called to the advertisement of the Round Table, one of the best literary papers in the country Its book reviews alone are worth the price of subscription. —C. W. West has opened in the Post Office building a confectionery and fruit stand, where he keeps the nicest of every thing in that line. —C. M. Doughty has stuffed the skin of a bull snake, seven feet and tea inehes long, killed on the east side of the river, by W. Chambers. He has also stuffed swan which measures six feet across the wings. —On Sabbath next Rev. Noah Lathrop, of Paynesville, will preach at the M. E. church. —Call at Mrs. Tilton's and examine fur« niture. Bargains can be had. wm—e A I A I E E N S Combined Reapers and Mowers, ctto. Grovenor & Co. are receiving now-a-days a large amount of reapers, mowers, horse*' rakes, &c. for the ooming harvest. Amougst them they have the Hubbard Combined Reaper and Mower, mauufttoturcd by Younglove & Massey, Cleveland, Ohio,' which is gotten up on an entirely new principle, something that has always seen needed to make a perfect combined reaper. It has a fast motion for mowing and a slow motion for reaping it is double geared, so ihut whea on* pm-t is at work the other is not, and can be changed by the driver by just shifting a lever. It must be seen to be appreciated, and all the farmers that look at it say it is "the" machine. All of the Hubbard Mowers are made with that gear this year, so that farmers who do not have grain to cut this year can get the mower, and then get the reaping attachment next year. For a single light mower they have the Meadow King, formerly Theyer's Iron Mowwr, which is all steel and iron exoept the tongue and trhiffletrees, and is so con structed that the pitman is always on line with the sickle, no matter how far the cut ter bar is raised or lowered. The sim plicity and durability of it commends it self to every one. It took the first premi um at the Slate Fair at Minneapolis last fall, as also did the Hollingsworth Sulky Rake which they have for sale. They pro pose to farmers to put them in competition with any other mower and rake made in the Cnitfd States, and keep the one that does the best work. The New Yorker Self Rake Reaper has its usual Urge number of salts this year with this firm. There are more of them sold through the Sauk Valley than of any other reaper in the market. The combined Self Rake Kirby Reaper was introduced by the firm through this section last year, and comes well recom mended by all who have ever seen it used as the "Little Kirby" which is light strong and very durable. The Little Champion Hand and Self Ra king Reaper with a separate jointed bar mowing attachment, is the lightest draft machine in the world, cuts six feel in reap ing, (our feet four inches in mowing, and is very simple and handy in raising or low ering ihe cutter bar in grass and grain. They have the J. I. Case Sweepstake Separators with Woodbury Mounted Power, Climax Power nnd Pitts or Carey Power manufactured at Racine, Wis. This thresher has more sales by many hundreds each year than any other machine made in the United States, because it will do more and better work, thus making it a desirable and profitable one for the farm ers and also for the man who owns the machine. This thresher with Woodbury power also took the first premium at the State Fair last fall. This firm has the largest supply of ex tras for all of their machinery that is kept in Northern Minnesota, ascan be seen by going in and looking on their shelves and through the house. It is best far the farmer to buy a machine where he can got repairs and extras for it when needed. The business of the firm is doubling it self each year, having been started three years ago, until now it is acknowledg ed to be the leading bouse in the agiicul tural business of Upper Minnesota. Their large warehouse is crowded now with ma chines ordered by the farmers for this year, and as they never get on an over stock of the standard machines, orders should be given at. once, so as to secure them to be delivered in time for use.
