M. Fontaine, hastening to toll the "neanwaiae that it m»y bemad auie Totro BoWe-mere Ktarnin^' "It is certain to be her," cried Ernes tine "she told va not to expect her and it is so late too." "It is no nsa going to meet her she will be here directly," said Jean, walk ing to the door in hia deliberate way. Almost directly there was a sound of voice, of exclamations—the cook, the valet-dc-chambro, Sidonie, Madame Jean's mind, appeared to announce the safe arrival ot the travelers. A couple of dogs came in barking—even the children's bonne came rushing down from up stairs .the game of dominoes was interrupted Jean embraced hip mother very affectionately as she en tered the room Fontaine hoverod about, deeply interested in the meeting, and hastened to relieve Madame de Tracy Of her parasol parasols were wild ly handed about like buckets at a con flagration then came more embraces, explanations, and exclamations. "Yon •ever came to meet me. I forgot to post my letter. Casimir brought us up ID his little carriage." "Unfortunate ly we have dined. There h* sure to be something. Bon jour, Barbo, here you aro returned from England!" "We nearly did not get home at all oldby Chretien ran his cart up against us. He was quite tipsy. Oh, I am sure of it. Give us something to eat, for I am famished." All this in a crescendo, which was brought to a climax by a sudden shriek from Madame Jean. "Who is that in the window?" she cried, pointing. "Look, there is some body and said seised her husband's arm. r$w*-' "I am really too forgetful. Come here, my dear child," cried Madame de Tracy. "Here is my dear young friend. Miss George, Ernestine I hare persuaded her to come back with me." At this incantation the little appari tion who had been standing olasping her great warm shawl, and childishly absorbed in the scene, wondering who each person could be, advanced blush ing, with ruffled hair, and trailing her long draperies. She looked up into their faces with that confiding way she had. Madame Jean made her a little inclination Jean came up and good naturedly shook hands aV Anglauej Monsieur Fontaine, parasol in hand, bowed profoundly. Tired as she was, hungry, preoccupied by her return home, an idea flashed through Madame de Tracy's fertile mind at that instant, which,.alas 1 unlike many of her ideas, she was destined to put into execution. "Monsieur Fontaine, our exoellen inaire," aaid she, going on with her in troductions "Mademoiselle do Coetlo gon, Mr l'Abbe Verdier. Ernestine we will give Miss George the yellow room, and some supper. My dear child, I am dying of hunger. I have eaten nothing but little tartlets all day." The tartlets, the chateu, the moon light, the ladies, the whole journey, seemed to come out of the Arabian Nights Catharine thought, only the abbe did not belong to them. The quiet litth old man, sitting in the cor ner, caused a thrill to this stern Protes tant of which he was happily uncon scious. Catharine and her protectress supped in the great dining-room—a long aud lofty room, with a fine ceiling, and many tall windows, barred and butter ed. The ono lamp only lighted the table, where cold meat, and cream shecsc, and a melon und grapes were spread. Jean accompanied them, and so did Ernestine, who flung a pretty white ho^d over her bead, and satlot, watching them at their meal. "And your giandmother, bow isY-. she:'' asked Madame de Tracy of her son. "She is as usual," said Jean "she has hoard ot your return, aud Baptists has just came down to ask for a little supper for her from your tabic. Miss George, you do not eat. You must get a good appetite at Tracy. I hope yon are going to stay with us lor some time Again Catharine blushed up, and looked from her host to the little lady with tho bright eyes. "I thought—I hoped," she stammered—• "We have got her safe," intenupted Madame do Tracy, Hurriedly, carving away at A cold chicken. "We are not going to part from her." Poor lady, her courage was failing her somewhat. She did not like the looks Madame .1 cane, was casting at her little proteye. She made kusto to send Catharine to bed as soon as she had done her supper. Baptise with a candle, and Barbe, were both deputed to 'show Miss George the way up the broad stone stair*', with curiously-scrolled iron rail ings, alongftgreat stone passage dark with shadows, and with windows at in tervals looking on tho moonlit couit yard. Their footsteps echoed, and their moon-ab.ad^ffJKttad along ^-with'them: Catharina looked out once, and saw a figure crossing the court. The iron gates opened to let it out, and she re cognized the'tail dark gentleman they "had called Monsieur Fontaine. *'I im agined he was Monsieur de Tracy when I |first came Catharine thought. "Thiey were both very kind." "What is that distant noise she "asked Blaree,as she 'followed* her up more stairs' and passages. "That is the sound of the sea, made moiselle," said Barbe. "We hear it very well from here when the wind blows in this direction." Caiharine dreamt of the sea that night, of her journey, ot the abbe and Monsieur Fontaine, of Beamish, pay ing his marches and sonatas in Dick's studio. She dreamt that she heard the music even, and then, somehow, she hersel.' was playing, and they were all -ii.stenir.gto her but the notes would not strike—in" vain sne trledr—she could bring forth no sound and the sea came nearer ... and nearer all the time, and the wives flowed in tone. It was a horrible droam, though when she awoke there was nothing much in it. (TO MS OOHtTWWBDO COOKING FOOD FOR STOCK.—-The Massachusetts Sate Board of Agricul ture discussed this subject at the meet ing in Deoambsr, 1867, as wo find it in the report ot that body for 1867-8. The speakers were all men of high eharaoter, mature yean, experienced in the breeding, keeping and fattening cattle, most of them engaged in, tn| dairy business—and there was butlit tle difference of opinion as to tho use and value of food cooked in some way. Prof. Agassis, tho illustrious Datura' ist, shows in the following clear, plain and unmistakable language, the rea sons why toed for domestic ani mals should be prepared, it being pre mised that the food we give our stock is not that whioh nature provides at first hands, but is dried and mechani cally altered in many ways. Soaking or steaming recovers hay to its wonted bulk or succulence and as Prof. Agas sis said of this mode of preparing food in general: "It must gave the secretion of saliva to an enormous extent, and therefore relieve the' animal from a physiological labor whioh is very man ifest. I have no doubt that that must be the chief source of relief to thee cat tle, because dry food must be softened in order to be digested and it must be done by the secretions of the mouth the secretory surfaces of tho alimen tary canal—and, in fact, by all the sec retory surfaces of the digestive appara tus. Now, where does that come from 7 From the blood and if you supply the food so far softened that the animal is relieved from that physiological labor, you place your animal in a much bet ter condition for it* work. I have no doubt that there is the explanation of jour results—that your steam performs apart of the operation whioh your ani mal has to do itself by its secretion." Wnv OATTMC j« AND OrBflE iStOCK TOWAKD stock is cot regularly fed, and tho sup ply of respiratory food is deficient, na ture avail." herself of the fat previous ly stored in the animal's body as fuel to sustain the animal heat, and where the food is deficient and there is no accu mulation of fat to supply its place, the muscle and other portions of the body are oonsumed, and death by gradual starvation is the consequence. Farm era, keep your stock well ted if you do not want to sustain losses toward spring. UU&&& —Barley chopped or growad into meal and mixed with milk or whey will fatten hogs in the shortest possible tmo. There is no other feed that will keep hogs so healthy during the pro cess of fattening, and fatten so rapidly. Pea-meal and corn-meal scalded are good but not equal to this. They are more heating than barley, and are apt to cause hogs to become mangy, thus retarding their improvement.' -flogs which have been overfed with corn, which often happens, can be roslorfd to good condition quickly by barley feed. :u NICE COOKIES.—Eight eggs, four teacups of sugar, one and one-half cup's of melted butter, seven teaapoonfuls of yeast powder: floor enough to make a soft dough.
