a I S I S I S O A A CORIf S A Indian corn is a semi-tropioal pro duct, atd it it reaches maturity in Northern climate, it mu^ be of an ear ly variety. While wo do not thinL ^fuinuasota is a natural corn producing State, lifco Missouri, yot, when pLated early, and properly ca^d for, we never kuc'.: a failure. Wo do not uaeno to be c&derstood is wyv L*''t it is eveny year a sur -i cf! over x'^ S btfi tro Lever knew an instance but that WL-~ or our farmers had a good erop eve year, and this, too, when we were vioitcd by late frosts in the spring, and irly frosts in the fall. We believe, as a general rule, our ferae, axu juone to work their corn crops too much and too deep during their growth, particularly after the corn is in the*tassel. The roots oi the oorn •ud frequently out with a shovel plov?, which requires time for new roots to form, thus putting back the growth and early maturity. The stalks, alter the visitation of the jurv thus inflict ed, are left sprawling all over the ground, which necessarily puts the crop back several days. We think it is demonstrated beyond a doubt, that the corn crop of Minneso ta should be cultivated in the early stages of its growth. It should be plowed and cultivated frequently, until the weeds are thoroughly killed, after Which only the surface of the ground should be worked. The roots of tie oorn should never be disturbed. We do not care how much the ground is worked in the middle of the rows, but our farmers msy depend upon it that the more they cut and slash up the roots with the shovel plow, or any other plow, the less likely they will be to have an oarly and good crop. This system is too much of good thing in the eultivstion of afield of oorn. But what varieties to plant. The North fiiver is a sure erop. So is the King Philip, the Canada, the Vermont and other varieties of flint, though it is questionsble if these varieties are as profitable as the dent. It is said, too. that the flint is not so good for bread, or for feeding stock as the dent—all of whieh we expect is truo. The only advantages 'the flint oan possibly have is that it my be a tew days earlier than the dent, but we be-man. lieve there are varieties of dent quite ss profitable as the flint, and we believe the dent will yield more to the sere.— The best varieties of the latter are the Ohio common dent, and the early Indi an!, white dent, which our farmers will doubless find profitable. We have no hesitation in recom mending farmers to plant com. Under ordinary circumstances, and in most seasons, it can be put down as a profitable crop. There is no crop a far mer takes more pride in thun a good field of corn. We think Minnesota may venture to be put down as a corn Btata.—Farmers1 Union. S O O W S A correspondent of the Western Rural says I have noticed a number of recipes in your paperjbr the cure of foot rot In sheep, and as it is a most loathsome disease, and is sure to give the owner of sheep the "blues," I will give a rec ipe which 1 have used on several flocks with complete success. Take blue vitriol and pulverize it thoroughly, and mix it with lard a as to form a blue salve, and after cleaning the sheep's foot and paring off all loose horn apply the salve to the affected part with a small paddle prepared for the purpose. Continue to apply the salve once a week to all the sheep, whether lame or not, for about eight weeks in succession, and you are sure to core. A good deal depends on par ing the foot before aplying the salve. O W O A A O S I N 1 S Io answer to this question put by one of its contributors, the American Agriculturist has the following It depends «n the breed, the food at com mand, the conveniences tor feeding, the probable price for pork next fall, and the price a year henee. We should pre* mite, however, that in any case the pigs should have all they will eat of some kind of food. The only differ ence to be made between growing pigs find fattening pigs is in the character ofthe food. A fattening jig requires rich, concentrated food a growing pig ft more bulky and less nutritions food '. but in either ease, the pig, to do well, must have all it will eat. If you have ft small boned, woll bred pig, such as ft grade Esses or Berkshire or Suffolk* we think it would be far more profit ... ftble asftrule to fatten'spring pigs than to winter them over. Let them have the raft of a elover pasture, all the milk and slop from the bouse, and all the Coin ind other grain in water twenty, four hours before feeding. If well breed, snob treatment should give jour •you pigs that will dress 300 pounds by the first of December. On the other hand, if you have a ooarse, large-boneJ breed of pigs, the better plan will be towiater them over. In this case, givo them the run of a good elover pas tare, plenty of water, .what waste from the house you have to spare, and a little grain to keep them growing as tepidly as possible. —A prize of ten dollars was recently offered to any member of the Georgii fceaeheTs' Inattfcts who would write and spell correctly the words in the following sentence "It is an agreeable sight to witoass the unparalleled em barrassment of a harnessed pedlar at tempting to gauge the symmetry of a faded onion, which a sibyl has stab bad with a poniard regardless of the "inmandoes of the lilies of the cornelian hue."
