A E S O a E S O N The Pillars of Hercules, on whioh swing tho gates of inlet and outlet to the Mediterranean Sea, aro but the posts of a wicket compareJ to tho *,. *olio portals of Do Fuoa. Tho width of the entranco is fourteen milos. Tho nortlioru gate-post, Capo Bonillu, is the seaward buttress of a rango of moun tains, somo of which aro 6,000 to 7,000 feet high. They aro covered with fir trees to the sumnr.t. Capo Flattery, tho beadhnd on the south, is a wonder that men in the various section of tho United States should travel around tho globo to see. It is the termination of tho snow-clad Olympic range Where it breaks down into tbo ocean it is a perpendicular wall one hundred feet high, of ragged, contorted rock, a con glomerate of bowlders of bassaltie beaoh-sand, round cobble-stones, and pebbles, solidified into tho hardness of adamant. The material present* the resistance of flint. But a lores of na ture in somo far-back age cracked, broke and deranged it as a man with the grip of his fingers would splinter an army biscuit. Immense blocks stand detached in every position. Down beneath them the sea has for centuries been drilling a bearing into the rock, and has made vast and deep grottoes, and arches, and colonnades, into which the tide ebbs and flows, and where the seals live and love and raise families of baby seals, and where vio let-colored cormeracts, petrels guille ducks and muros deliciousness that mots, hariesquin make music oC a money cannot buy. THE BLUE GROTTO OP CAPRI. You have heard of it, perhaps. The entrance from the sea is so narrow that the parsons in tho boat must lie down but as soon as that is passed jou enter into fairy-land. The water, clear to the bottom, is of an exquisite, celesti al blue, which is reflected from the cal careous rocks in their puro whiteness. It is a palace of turquoise, built abovo a sapphire lake. The drops of water from the oars sparkle like pearls with a bite tinge. The effect on the body is most singular, the part under water of a swimmer is silvery white, with blue shadows round the nnscles whilst the head and neck, which arc out of water are of a bronze color, looking like an alabaster statue with a bronze head. It is certainly one of the most beauti ful natural curiosities in the world. A fisherman was the first to discover it in 1822, though thcro aro some indica tions that it was known to ancients Much has b3cn written as to the causo of so singular a phenomenon perhaps the most plausible is that owing the peculiar formcf the entrance, the aeu saturated with light, which is shut up within, and throws its rays to the farth est deptha of the vault. In another part of the coast there is a grotto where tho oloris that of pale green it is very similar to its neighbor, but not qr.ite equal in beauty.—Rural Home. E O O A O E S S.J Woolley, of Hilliard, Ohio, talks about potatoes as follows in the Ohio Farmer: "It ha3 been thrso hundred years sinco the potato was discovered, but it is now cultivated in all parts of the globe where civilization has extended. One hundred and fifty million bushels are consumed annually in the Lnited States as an article ol food alone, aside from their extensive utility in occupy ing so great a part in commerce and arts. There aro a great variety of opin ions in regird to the proper method of their culfur.-1. I have tried many ex periments in the cultivation of potatoes, and have settled on the following sys tem as being the true one If it is convenient, plant your pota toes on new land sod is next best, and should be broken in fall or early spring, and subsoiled at least filteen inches deep. Animal or stable manure should not be used on potato gro und, it has a tendency to deteriorate and disease po tatoes thus raised lack the sweet, deli cate flavor that those have which aro raised on virgin soil. The crop may be much benefited with vegetable man ure, ashes, lime, salt, &c. I have nev er succeeded in raising a good crop of healthy potatoes on wet land a rich, calcareous clay soil, that contains a little sand, is best, and may be much benefited by being undcrdraincd. There are many failures caused by not having the seed properly prepared. There are a variety of opinions of seed plant, whether large or small. I am satisfied that hvge seed, not cut in more than two piece?, is best, but small seed if properly prepared, is nearly as good. Large potatoes should be lengthwise, and small ones should have only the sprout end cut off, i. c. the end furth est from tho stem. If all the sprouts are allowed to grow, there is not vitali ty enough in a small potato to make a rigorous growth. There will be many stalks, and a hill of many little potatoes where as if the sprout end is cut off there will be a few strong stalks, and not more than half the number of po tatoes will be produced but they will nearly all be large ones. Those that are planted early should be cut at least a week before they are planted and the heap turned over, or spread thin, to dry. An incrustation of the starch and juice of the tuber, called healing, takes place, which de fends the piece against decay. It is important to have your seed well ma tured. If your seed potatoes are not ripe you need not expect sucoess. The best time to plant, in this lati tude, is about the middle of April, but the time may be extended to the first of July, but early planting, as a rule is by far the best. The earlier in the season the potato gets a start the more likely it is to eseapo the summer droughts, the attacks of the bugs, and other influences unfavorable to its groWtb and maturity. Early planting should be about eight inches deep, to if the frost should kill the top?, the eyes will start a sain. if your ground is clear of weeds*, I would plant in drills about Ave inoh os apart, and have the rows three feet and a half apart. A.s soon as the plant is about four inches high, run the cultivator close to and between, but not over them. The next lime cultivate deep, and thorough ly pulverize the soil, and encourage the growth of the tuber rather than the stalk, and the third time lay them with tho double shovel, not hill them up too high, cut the weeds out after this with a hoe. RULES FOR. PATRONS OF CHEESE FACTORIES Mr. T. Curtis of the Utics Btr aid recently presented series of fults to be observed by the patrons of cheese factories. They may bo summarized thus. Cows should cot be abused or wor ried, but treated kindly and gently. Cows should not bo starved or fed in nutritious or unwholesome food, but. should have an abundance of food, and should have free access to salt. Cows should have plenty of clean water to drink not bo compelled to drink stagnant water, nor go long dis tance for water. Cows should have ample shade in summer, and a warm, clean, well ven tilated stablo in winter, with opportu nities to exercise. Milking should be done in a cool place in summer, when the cow is standing quietly. The udder should be cleansed. The milk from a cow with a calf less than four weeks should not be used, nor that from a cow suffering from any disease. Cleanliness should be scrupulously observed about the stable and dairy house. Milk should be cooled and aired as drawn from tho cow, by bringing it in contact with cool surface, and expo sing it in thin sheets to the air. It should be kept in covered cans anly as short a time as unavoidable and should be protected from the rays of the sun. Milk shout not be watered. Milk should not be skimmed, nor should the strippings be kept out. Milk should not be adulterated in any way. Milk drawn on Sunday should be kept at home for butter, that the cheese maker may rest or worship, as the dic tates of his conscience may direct. —"Ah, parson, I wLh I could taks my gold with me," said a dying deacon to pastor. Nt Irom the Detroit Mechanic and Inventor. THE GOOD TIME COME.—The patent so long held by Wheeler & Wilson for the four motion feed sewing machine, has at last expired, and an extension has been refus ed. The day has gone br when a machine costing but irom SI-3 to §30 can be sold at from §60 to $125. We see that the American Shuttle Sewing Machine Compa ny, of Detroit, are first in the field with a machine embodying all the best features of the more costly article, and while their machines are in every particular, as per fect in their adaption to all classes of work as tho Wheeler & Wilson, Graver & Baker, and Singer, they are now disposing of them at prices ranging from $25to $40. This is certainly an immense reduction, and its effects are already to be seen in the large orders received, f.nd the large ship ments mat'e daily by the American Shuttle Sewing Machine Company, 115 Bates street, Detroit.
