The Christmas Sunday school festivi ties of the Presbyterian church, were cele brated last Wednesday evening, and those present had a very enjoyable time. The roller rink was open Monday and many skaters enjoyed themselves. The rink Is to bo open to the publio three evenings of each week, for a short season. On New Year's day the river, in this city, was frozen over, and there was con siderable ice In the bay. Tho river ice was sufficiently strong to make skating safe. J. C. Walker has rented the front room of the McDonald block, next to the A Race office, and as soon as it is made ready for occupancy, he will move his lumber in spection office thereto. An organ recital will be given at tho Con. gregatlonal church this evening. In addi tion to organ music there will be vocal muslo by the male quartette, violin solo by Prof. Root, and a reading by Miss Kelly. A number of the new Columbian half dollar pieces were received at the National bank last week, but were soon sold to those desiring the souvenirs. Last Friday was the day set to make the arguments before Judge Kelley in re gard to & new trial for August Grossman, who was found guilty of being the murder er of Albert Molltor, at Rogers City, In 1875, but the case was adjourned one week. New Year's day was a very pleasant one In this locality, as regards weather. Thore was just enough snow to make good sleighing for light rigs, and in the afternoon a light thaw set In which at one time seemed sure would turn to rain. By evening tho temperature became oold- er. Tho winter time table of the Detroit, Bay City & Alpena railroad went into ef fect on January 1 st. The change made is light. The express leaves this city at 8:20 a. v., ten minutes earlier than the summer and fall time, and arrives from Detroit at 6:80 r. m., five minutes later than the old time. The statistics of the Y. M. C. A. for the month of December are as follows : Attended rooms, 175 ; baths takon, 130 ; visitors to rooms, 43 ; attended gymnas ium, 508 ; letters written by young men, 40 ; new members, 7 ; renewals, 5 ; total membership, 198 , gospel meetings held, 2 ; total attendance, 95. Miss Ilattie Cole was married to F. II. Dodd, of Mt. Pleasant, last Wednesday morning, at tho residence of her aunt, Mrs. S. Cole. The newly marriod couple left town for their new homo the same morning. The bride has been a teacher in the publio schools for several years, and has many friends In Alpena. The program of the New York Stars, which excellent company opens the Y. M. A. star course, at the Opera House next Monday evening, the 0th, consists of readings by A. M. Taylor, whistling solos by Miss Mabel Stlllman, soprano solos by Miss S. L. Tucker, and tenor solos by Carl O'Dell also duets and trios. The company Is a brilliant one, and are good entertainers. Two log trains aro now in commission drawing logs from the pineries in the Mud Lake railway region, to this city. One arrived Monday with logs for the Messrs. Fletcher, and the other arrived yesterday with F. W. Gilchrist's logs. Tho intention is to make a trip per day for each train. The dlstanoo from this city to tho Fletcher log landing It 70 mllos. Tho Gilchrist haul Is some miles shorter. The logs will be landed on the river banks above the Potter mill. A young eon of M. Dougherty was bad ly frozen In the foot last week, and some of the toes will have to be amputated. He had gone from the elty to work for a farmer in Montmorency county. The boy's father was working in a camp about two miles from where the boy was stay ing, and he started to visit hit parent. The boy got bewildered in the woodt and wanderod about all night, and at last be coming tired out he leaned against a tree and fell asleep. When discovered his foet were badly frozen. He was brought to town, and It is belloved ho will escape with the less of only two toes. Tho new engine for the Fletcher paper pulp works is a Corliss compound one, made at Chioago. The low pressure cylinder Is 18x30 Inches and weighs 9, 800 pounds. Tho high pressuro cylinder has not boon received yet. It Is 10x30 inchos and weighs 3,800 pounds. The en gine frame wolghs 11,700 pounds. The crank shaft Is ten lnohos In diameter, and has a weight of 2,840 pounds, while the cross head weighs 075 pounds. The fly wheel has a diameter of 12 foet, with 41 Inches faco and weight 23,295 pounds, and the band wheel is of nine feet diam eter, and weighs 8,000 pounds. The en gine will be employed to move the ma chinery in the wast) room. Says the Lewleton Courier : The A. S. & N. W. R. R. have made a connection with the Nicholson, Hanson logging rail road, over which they will run thoir pas senger train until spring, when they will grade their own line through to Vienna. The N. II. logging company road will bring them within 2 mllos of tho village for the winter. Passengers will be trans, ferred by team for the present. This will bo consummated before our next writing. The passenger trains arrive at Young's camp every morn at 6:80, and return at 8:30, and make close connection with the D.,B. C. &A. railroad at Au Sable, with tho south bound train. The Now Year reception, by the Bos ton Club of tho Knights Templar, at Masonic hall, Monday evening, was at tended by over 200 people, and a very agreoable tlmo passed by all presont, In addition to dancing and card parties, an entertainment was givon with tho follow. Crissman; recitation, by Miss Kelly; addross, by Rov. n. n. Van Auk en; vocal solo, by Miss Potter. Mrs. Clothier was down on the program for an Instrumental pleco, and Chas. Golllng for a solo, but they were unable to bo in attendance. For some time past every person who had photoes taken at tho photo rooms of L. M. Miller, was given a number, which entltlod the possessor to a chance at the drawing for a silver tea set and other valuable premiums. Mr. Miller retained a duplicate of every number Issued. The duplicate numbers were placod in a box on Monday, and the drawing took place, under the supervision of a reliable com. mlttoe. The tonth ticket drawn won tho silver tea set, and F. C.
