There was once a little, thin-built fellow, rich as a Jew,and independent as tho devil, riding long a highway, in the state of Georgia, when he over took a man driving a drove f'ot ho. by the help of a big, raw-boned six- feet two specimen of hunianity. Stoi ping the last-named individual, he ac costed him : v ,r 1 r I say, are these your hogs?' '. " No, sir, I'm to work by the month'' What pav might you be getting, friend?" V T . - , : r "Ten dollars a month, and whisky thrown in," was the reply. " Well, look here, I'm a weak, little, inoffensive man, and people are apt to impose upon me, you . see. Now, I will give you twenty-five dollar. a month to ride along with me, and pro tect me," was Gardner's reply. " But," he added, as the thought struck him, how might you be on the fight?" . "Never been licked in my life," re joined the six-footer. " J nst the man I want Is it a bar gain ?" qnerried Gardner. .; Six-footer ruminated. Twenty-five dollars double the wages nothing to do but ride around and smash a fellow's mug occasionly, when he's sassy? Six footer accepted. They rode -along till just at night they reached a village. Dismount injr at the door of the hotel, they went in Gardner immediately singled out the biggest man in the room, and piCKOd a fuss with him. After considerable promiscons jawing, Gardner turned to hi fighting friend and intimated that the licking of sad imen had be come a sad necessity. Six-footer re plied, went in, and came out first best. . The next night, at another hotel, the same scene was re-enacted ; Gardner getting into a row with the biggest man in the place, ami six-footer doing the fighting. " - At laston the' third day, they came to a ferry, kept by a huge double-fisted nirvn who had never been licked in his lifer Whilst crossing the river, Gard ner as ii snal began to find, fault and blow.' sThe ferry-man' naturally got madand threw thrn-js around kind'of loose, and told them his opinion of their, kind. y Gardner then , turned" tirt his friend from the shoulder, and gently broke th intelligence t him, .that he Was sorry, but that it was absolutely necessary to thrash that ferryman. Take a'small rope, (a plow line for example,)' double it, make a loop of the double, end, and draw it snugly around the, under jaw ot the animal, just behind his1 front teeth, with .the loop t underneath. Throw the loose end over your shoul der, and " walk in the. way he should go," holding fist and pull steadily and firmly.
