'. An Old Story - ' Tbe mow fall fast in the silent street1 And the wind is laden, with cutting sleet -r And there U ft pitiless glare in tbe sky, ' As a fainting woman goes wandering by. ' Tbe rags tbat wrap her waited form- -. -. Are froien it iff in the perishing storm; f. And she is bo cold that the snow-flakes rest """ Unmelted upon her marble breast. Ah ! who could believe that those ray less eyes Were once as sunny as April skies , ' ' And the flowers she plucked in earb springy. , Loved to be touched by so pure a thing? " " i 'Tis past and the fierce winds shrieking by, Drowns the faint gasp of her partiug'sigh And lifeless she falls at the outer gate - Y Of Aim who has left her desolate. ; : Silently falls the snow on her face, ''.-;- ; j Clothing her form in its stainless grace ; , r As though God, in His mercy, had will'd that she Should die in 'a garment of purity. '; j Origin of "Seeing the Elephant.' r. Some thirty years 6ince, at on6 of the Philadelphia J theaters, - a pageant wag in rehearsal, at which it was neces sary to have an elephant. ; No elephant was to -be had. : Tho "wild animals" were all trayeling, and the property man, stage 'directors and managers, almost had fits when .they thought of it. ' Days passed in the hopeless taslc of trying to : secure one; but' at last Yankee ingenuity triumphed, as,indeed, it always does, and an elephant was made to order of wood, skins, paint and varnish. Thus far the matter was very well; but as yet they had found no means to make said combination travel. ' Here, again, the jcenins of the managers, the stage director ' and property man struck out, and two broth ers were duly enstalled as legs. Jied C ; , one of the true , and genuine "b'hoys," held the responsible position of fore-legs, and several nights he played that heavy parj to the entire satisfaction of the managers anddelight of the audience. , , , The part, however, was a very tedi ous one, as the elephant was obliged to be on the stage for about an hour, and Ned was rather too found of the bottle to remain so long without "wetting his whistle, so he set his wits to work to find out a way to carry "a wee drap" with him. The eyes of the elephant being made of two porter bottles, with the necks in, "Ned conceived the brilliant idea of filhns them with good stuff. , This he fully carried out, and, elated with suc cess, ho willingly undertook to play fore-legs again. ! - : . :'i Night came on, and the theater was densely crowded with the denizens of the Quaker City,;. The music was played in. sweetest strains; the curtain rose, and the play began. Ned and "hind-legs? marched upon tho stage. The elephant. was greeted with many rounds of applause. The decorations and trappings were gorgeous. The elephant, and the prince seated on' his back, were loudly cheered. The play proceeded ; the elephant marched round upon the stage. The fore-legs got dry, withdrew one of the corks and treated hind-legs, and drank the health of the audience in a bumper of genuine ele phant eye whiskey, a brand, by the way, till then unknown. On went the play, and on went Ned drinking The conclusion march was to be made; the signal was given, and fore-legs staggered towards the front of the stage. The conductor pulled the ears of the ele phant to tbe right the fore-legs stag gered to the left the footlights ob structed the way, and he raised his foot and stepped plump into the orchestra! Down went fore-legs on the leader's fiddle- over, of course, turned the ele phant, sending the prince and hind-legs into the pit. The manager stood horror-struck; the prince andhind-legslay confounded, the actors choking with laughter, and poor Ned, casting one look, a strange blending of drunkenness,' grief and langhter, at the scene, fled hastily out of the theater, closely followed by the leader with the wreck of his fiddle, per forming various cut and thrust motions in the air. The curtain dropped on a scene behind the scenes. No more pageant, no more fore-leg, but every body held their sides. Music, actors, pit, boxes and gallery, rushed from the theater, shriekingbetween every breath: "Have you seen the elephant?" t3T" The good people of St. Antho ny .are having a- good deal of sport over proposed balloon ascension got vp by bne Wilson, who was to be tho joronaut in chief, assisted by Augustus Uaesar IJrofnt, of fct. Anthony News. Augustus feeling considerably elated, and wishing to do the fair thing, sent an invitation to a young lady to ascend with hira, who, we understand, accept ed. A sentimental young gentleman, learning of her determination address ed her the following lines : 'Forbear, sweet girl, the task forego, And thus our anxious troubles end; Tbat you will mount full well we know. But greatly fear you'll ne'er descend. When an gels see a mortal rise. So mild, so beautiful and fair. They'll woo her spirit to tbe skies, And keep their angel sister there." By some means or other the above lines fell under the eye of another gen tleman friend of the young lady, who knew Anthony Caesar " like a book," and who at once put the finishing-touch upon them, thus: . "That gracelcs chap with whom you fly, . Despite of all you do or say, When sailing in the npper sky, Will leave yon in the "milky war." Fortunately, for the young lady, the balloon did not go up.
