Now, Mr. editor, no dodging the question. Give ns a plain answer res or no. Are you in favor of capital owning labor t Why don?t the editor of the Democrat publish the record of its candidate for Vice-President Herschel V.Johnson.. Come, Mr. editor, give your readers at least a portion of his record that they may know the man who they are called upon to sustain. 1ST We again, and for abont the twentieth time, reiterate that we pay no attention whatever to communications from any quarter, unless signed by the name of a responsible person. The writer of the communication from Detroit in relation to the late firemen's tournament, will see in the above one reason for the non-appearance of his article. Sabbath School Celebration1. No. 1, of Hudson, after their return from Battle Creek, the following in regard to Hamilton No. 1, of this village: R-sohed, That in our opinion Hamilton Co. No. 1, of Dowagiac, fairly and honestly won the first prize and the tournament; and we further believe that nine-tenths of the firemen and citizens are of the same opinion. That we also believe that said company pursued an honorable course in refusing to accent the second prizes a course only just to themselves, their friends at home, and to Messrs. Cowing A Co., the builders of their splendid machine. (Three cheers for Dowagiac !) Life of Lincoln. W have re ceived from the N. Y. Tribune and from the Chicago Press A Tribune copies of the campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln, issued in cheap pamphlet form, peculiarly fitted for general circu lation. It is said to have been prepared with great care, and may be onsidered entirely reliable and authentic. It is admirably adopted to the wants of Republican Clubs and Committees.for gratutious distribution among the masses. It is furnished st the following rates : Per dozen - -- -.----40 cents. Per hundred - $ 2 50 Per thousand - -- -- -- -- 20 00 Temperance Meeting. Rev. G. L. Foster, of Tysilanti and J. B. Merwin, Esq., Agent of the State Temperance Society, addressed the citi zens of this village on the subject of temperance, at the Wigwam, on Thursday evening last. The meeting was very largely attended, and the re marks of both speakers were received with the greatest enthusiasm, especially those of Mr. Mer win. The efforts of both gentlemen were em ployed in proving by the most invincible logic that prohibition was the only reliable means to be em ptor ed to eradicate the evil of intemperance, and that it was not only necessary, but that it was just and fully in accordance with all the established regulations of every well regulated government. The favorite argument of the rumsellers and the rum drinkers, that a man has a right to eat, drink, 'and wear what he chooses, 'was' scattered to the four winds of heaven, utterly dissipated and des troyed. May. success .attend their efforts every where. ' - ------ Grand Presentation. On Thurs day-last Hamilton Fire Co., of this village, re ceived from Jackson, by express, a large, fine red rooster, accompanied by the following letter, which sufficiently explains the matter: Jacisoic, July 18th, 1860. Foreman and Members of Dowagiac Fire Co. Hamilton No. 1. Gsxtlemm: At a meeting-of Protection Fire Company No. 1, of the City of Jackson, held at their rooms July 10th, A. D., 1860 it was resolved to present to your Company our Rooster that was presented to us in 185S by Adrisn ire Company No. 2. You will therefore please accept the same, guar his laurels as well as we have done, and you will still find him some on distance. He has lost ne eya iQ fight. But it is only characteristic of the hard ft?htin that you as well as ourselves had to do at Battlu Creek, and out ef the good feeling we wish to show you as a Company, fighting so manfully against such numbers. We think we could Mt resign him into more honorable hands, as we have not been beaten for the Tournameut Prixe since we Hav had him. We hope you will be able to def tnd him against all competitors is the wishes of Fire Company No. 1, of Jackson. t S. A. WxUETG, Secretary. . . W. Wheat, President Our Jackson friends can rest assured that the 'old -fellow" will -receive the "bestf care at the lands of the Hamilton boy,-nd that they will ' nly resigu him to the protection of others, when 2jafl..' tave - beea . beatea it pom . future A Beautiftjx Pbesent. On Satur day last Hamilton Company No. 1, of this village received by express from Cowing A Co., makers of their engine, a beautiful and exqusitelr wrought solid silver trumpet, as a present to them fur the noble stand they took at the late firemen's tourna ment. . The trumpet is 22 inches in length, with eight inch bell, and weighes 36 ounces. The bell is richly chased with the most elegant bossy scroll, bud and flower work, and bears in relief on one side an engraving of the engine with the distance made at Battle Creek 281 ft. 7 inches immediately above it, and on the other side, the fireman's insignia the cap, pipe, lader, books and axe, gracefully grouped together. The shaft runs down from the mouth piece, with a graceful taper, with two beautiful heavy rings, one a short distance from the mouth piece, and the other near the sudden swelling of the belL The shaft is also richly ornamented with bud and flower work, and bears on one side, surrounded by a beautiful wreath, the following inscription : " Presented to Hamil ton Fire Co. No. 1, by Cowing A Co., for their Pluck in not accepting the second prize when they were entitled to the 1st, at Battle Creek, July 4tb. I860." On the opposite side is the crossed ladders. Taken altogether it is one of the most beautiful specimens of this kind of work ever exhibited, and we have no hesitation in pronouncing it equal if not superior to any thing of the kind offered at the late tournament as a prize. Messrs. Cowing A Co., have done no more than an act of justice, in thus r acknowledging the honorable course pursued by Hamilton Comptny in refusing to accept the 2d prize, when they had ao nobly won the first. May all their future engines stand as highly in the estimation of the public as does Hamilton engine, of this village, at the present moment Salting Cream fob Butter MaK cto. A writer in the Homestead reports a state, ment made at the New Haven lectures, that by ad ding a tablespoonful of fine salt to a quart of cream, aa the latter is skimmed from off the milk and placed in the cream-pots until enough accumulates for churning, the time required for churning is re duced to two or three minutes. In a trial made by the writer, he found this to be true, and his theory is, that the salt acts upon the thin coating of the globules of butter, and so dissolves it that a slight agitation breaks it, and the butier comes at once The experiment can easily be tried by any butter maker.
