"At tfce Last." The fbllowing poem appeared, originally in " The Independent," Written upon the passage " Ilea geeth forthj no to his work, end his labor, until the etening." The stream it calmest when it nears the tide, And lowers are sweetest at the eventide, And birds moat musical at close of day, And saints civinest when they pass away. Morning is loraly, hot a holier charm Lias folded close in the evenlli g's robes of balm ' And weary man moat erer lore her best, Fnr morning calls to toil, but night to rest. She comes from Heaven and on her wings doth bear A holy fragrance, like the breath of prayer , Footsteps of angels fellow in her trace, To shot the wearj eyes of day in peace. All things are hushed before, as she throws O'er earth and sky her man tie of repose ; There is a calm, a beauty and a power That morning knows not, in the eveuing hour. Until the evening" we must weep and toil, Plough life's stern farrow, dig the weedy soil, Tread with light feet the rough and thorny way, And bear the heat and burden of the day. Oh ! when our son is setting, we may glide Like summer evening down the golden tide ; And leave behind us as we pass away, fiwect, starry twilight round our sleeping clay 1 Another letter Irani a Democratic Soldier. We are permitted to copy the follow ing extracts from a private letter re ceived by John Jenkins, from F. M. Kob inson, of Pokagon, in this county. Mr. Robinson is a son of Mitchel Robinson, esq., and as most of our renders are aware, has been a Democrat all his life. At the time of the breaking out of the rebellion, Mr. Robinson, was a firm be lievar in the Breckiuridge doctrine that a State had a right under the Constitu tion to secede, and that the Govern ment had no power to coerce a State to remain in the Union. Now it will be perceived, he not only believes it the duty of the Government to put down the rebellion, even if in doing so it were necessary to exterminate every traitor North and South, but to accomplish this, he is perfectly willing to use every means in his power. We ask for his letter a careful perusal : Benton Barracks, St Louis, June 18th, 1883. J Ddar Bbotukr : I arrived here on the 3d of this month ; found most of the regiment here : all in e,,od spirits. The week following my arrival, we received offi cial notice of our exchange, wheu we drew our arms and clothing. Benton Barracks are supposed to be the best in the Government. It will be remem bered thatit was here Fremont expend ed so much money ; that it was judi ciously laid out no one who visits the place can doubt. It is understood that there are about ten thousand sick and wounded soldiers here at this time. IIow long we are to remain here it is impossible to say. As we are the only regiment here able te do guard duty, it may be that we shall remain for some time yet. There are a large number of paroled prisoners here, and more are coming every day. When I look about me and see the the suffering brought to our homes by this accursed rebellion, I am constrain d to say, " O, Lord, when will this war cease." But with hundreds of thous ands others, I would not have it cease until it can do so through an honorable peace from our own dictation. I am for a vigorous prosecution ol the war until the old flag the Banner of Beauty and Glory shall wave in tri umph over every foot of soil from Maine to the Gulf of Mexico; and I am for using every means which God has placed in our power to crush out the vile monster, even if in to doing every rebel in the Southern Confederacy has to bo exterminated aud every traitor in the North hung ! Live or die, sink or swim, survive or perish, I am for the Union the Union, one and undivided. I am lor the Government as it is administered, is are the representa Lincoln and Davi tives of the two great powers that are at war ; and my position is, that no man oan be neutral at this time, neither can be serve both Governments, either he will hate the one aud love the other ; or, he will hold to the one and despise the other ; there is no half way between to stand upon. Our duty is to save the Union, and those who prate about State rights, and the rights of " our southern brethren" but have no words at cheer for Federal soldiers who are pouring out their blood to save these very mi-n from all the hor rors of anarchy, are bast, sneaking cowards, aud do not deserve to be shot. They have not one breath of pin e pat riotism in their rotten carcasses. Every CMiifdder.ition which man holds dear, commands us to ataud bv oar oountry in this hour of her trial. Could the voices of our illustrious Fathers of the Revolution, be heard from heaven, they would ring in our ears the words " stand by the country, Lincoln and the Government, until t e last foe is conquered," and this shall he the language of your humble servant untillife shall be no more. Well, John, how is Vallandigham stock up your way. I know by experi ence, that it is in good demand in some parU of your county bat it is no go in ! the army. Had the soldiers their way about it, he would stretch hemp would stand upon nothing; and so should thousands of other w fire in the rear" Northern traitorg. Oh, if we had them in front, we would know what to do with them, but there is a day of retri bution coming. But I must close. Re spects to all. Write soon. Yours truly F. M. ROBINSON, Co. D, 91st, 111 Infantry. 3T First old"m"an M W hat does the minister think of our new burying ground?" Our expenses for telegraphic dispatches are larger thsin those of any other paper in Detroit, and more than seven times the amount paid by any one paper v Xear ago. In fact we now publish simulta neously with them, besides the regular Associated Press dispatches that are sent to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburg Gazette, Cincinnati GatetU, St Louis Jmwcrat, and Chicago Tribune the live leading papers in the cities in which they are pub lished, and for enterprise not a whit behind the New York journals. Almost daily it occurs that we obtain news by special dispatch twelve hours in advance of the Associated Press, of the correct ness of which statement we refer to the numerous readers of our Daily. In this city, where both the daily papers are habitually read by all parties, it is generally conceded that the dispatches ef the Advertiser'A TribuDe are the most reliable and sat isfactory of any published in Detroit. We are now sparing no expenses and intend to spare none to place the Advertiser & Inbune in the first rank aa a rpaper. Particular attention is "iven to State news, and to intelligence from our soldiers in the army, a correspondent being main tained in every Michigan Regiment. Politically the Advertiser and Tribune looks to the salvatiou of the country by the energetic prose cution of the war now waged against the accursed rebellion of the South. Ou humanitarian grounds, as a war measure, and as a safeguard for the future quiet of the nation, it upholds the President Emancipation Proclamation, and all ether war measures of the Government ; while it admits the propriwtv of friendly criticism, it holds that no di rect and" active opposition to the Gevernment is consistent with loyalty, or should be telerated in the North any more than in tho States engaged in the rebellion. Asa commercial paper we aim to make the Ad vertiser and Tribune the best in the State and have employed to conduct this department a man of large experience and reputation. This will make the paper particularly acceptable to farmers, aa well as merchants and millers. Our facilities for printing a large edition have lately been greatly increased by the erection of the fastest press in use iu this city, ana our circulation is keeping pace with our capacity of print.
