n.. nf bfi hest thinzs we have read
since our Columbia correspondent aent
us a description ot a contreoaou
dine, is one of a similar character de
scribed by the local of the Mobile Regis
ter and Advertiser. It appears that a
negro couple had been living together
for some years as man and wife, but
" widout de circumference of de law.
They disagreed, separated, and M
weaker vessel laid her case before de
Bureau," where the charges were heard,
and Sambo and his Dinah were sentenced
to be married. In order to be anre that
the sentence was properly executed, the
couple were placed under a military
guard, and marched off to Squire Starr
office. Arriving there, ths officer of the
guard remarked, "Squire, here a cou
ple for you to marry. .
"All riahu" replied the Justice;
."just
:ep in the back room.
The couple and the officer followed him
to the room in the rear of the front of
fice, and after explaining the duties and
obligations of married life, the Squire
requested them to join hands. , .
Bride " I isn't gwine to do it- J
doesn't want to hab nuffin to do wid dat
nieeer" '
Oroom-"I isn't 'ticular 'bout marry
in' wid de gal. I nebber lubbed de
wench." . i.
Thin protest opened the Squire s eyei
like " two full moons in the harvest.
He asked what was the meaning of it,
when the representative of the Bureau
informed the Justice that they were or
dered by the Freedmen's Court to be
married, and be came up to see the sen
tence executed. . i
With this understanding Justice htarr
told the " happy couple M to join hands,
which they did after much pursuasion,
and the following scene ensued :
Justice" Do you take this man to be
your wedded husband, to love, honor,
"bey," etc. ,.
Bride " No I doesn t not much I
doesn't I wouldn't hab a four acre lot
C.ll ,.K ..I. trait, "
lUliuioivu"".-
Freedmen's Bureau les we qo,
'Squire; we take him; go on with the
ceremony."
Justice "And do you take this wo
man to be your wedded wife, to love,
cherish," etc. .
Groom" I tole ye dat I isn I ticulaf.
I isn't hankerin' arter de 'crow.' I kin
lib without de ole gaL". ' ; .
Freedmen's Bureau " Certainly we
take her of course we do suits as to a
single allspice. Hurry up the cakes."
Justice " Then I pronounce you all
man and wife, and may the Lord have
mercy on yonr souls." ' ' ( '
Brokers.
i The brokers of the city of New York
are asking the Legislature to let them sell
their services for so much as people who
employ them may agree to give. It seems
to us that this is a fair demand. We
would fix a rate of brokerage, to be col
lected whenever no bargain is made, but
let every man who chooses to employ a
broker pay what he bargains to do.
There are sales where one-balf per cent
would be a large commission ; there are
others where two per cent would be little
enough. The legal restriction to one
half per cent is copied from a very old
British statute, wherein it waa inserted as
a barrier against usury. It seems to as
that it is simple justice to let a broker
like any other workman, charge hit own
price for his work, and let those pay who
choose to do it
High Bents in England.
While we are all making great com
plaints in this country about the enor
mous rents, we are' not the only people
who are suffering. Rents r increasing
rapidly in England, also. A building is
cow in coarse of erection in Lombard
street, London, which is to cost 70,000,
the gross rental of which is estimated at
22,000 annually. The London and
County bank bave rented the gronna
floor and basement of the building, for
which it is to pay ttcthe thoutand
pounds a year.
