From Surry of Eagle' Nest. A Felt of Horsemanship ia Winchester, by Gen. Ashby. In falling; back, Jackson left absolutely nothing behind for bis adversary. Eve rything wai removed, anil the laughing infantry greeted with jests and cheers an enormous railway engine, which, drawn by a long string ot horses, moved on with the rest. " ' ' " Jackson remained last, and his criti cal eyes peered in every direction, to discover whether anything had been for gotten. . "Is everything removed, Major?" he said to his chief quartermaster, Mnjor liarmun. " Everything, General." 1 " No commissary stores whatever are left." . " None. General." " And those broken cars at the depot?" . Ihey cannot be removed. ." Burn them, Major." " I will, at once, sir." . "And the telegraph wire?" , " Is cut, sir." , " But is it removed ? " "No, General." ' "Kemove it, Mnjor." Jackson then added: "Take your time. I am in no hurry to leave Winchester." Soon the broken cars were burning, the wire was rolled dp and placed in wagons, and the work was complete. ' ' " Very good," said Jackson, when the report was brought to him ; and he sat down under a tree, and folding his hands across bis breast, tell quietly asleep. He had been up all night, and never was able to co without Bleep. , The steady approach of the firing now indicated that-the enemy was pressing Ashby closely near the northern suburbs of the town. I rode in that direction and. reaching the rising ground at the head of Loudon street, where the re mains of the old tort built by Major George Washington, about 1756, may still be seen, encountered the cavalry, falling back in good order before the Federal advance. The rear guard, under personal command of Ashby, who was mounted on a snow white borse, was disputing obstinately every foot of gronnd; the column meanwhile dehling through the streets to form in line south ot the town. I had just reached this point when sudden rush of the Federal cavalry broke through the rearguard, and before 1 knew it, I was almost by Ashby's side, in the midst of a squadron of blue-coats, ban trine away with their pistols, ana slashing with sabres. The sweep of Ashby s weapon was, magnilicent, and be , . , , i if r .1. i seemed to launcn uimseu irum me gau dle at every blow, lie and his splendid animal seemed one, and it is impossible to describe bis face. It was on fare the eyes blazed he looked happy. I had no time to bestow upon him more than a glance, however. A sabre cut nearly unseated me, and the blue cordon was all around us. when a determined charee from one of Ashby's squadrons drove back the enemy, and he chased them two hundred yards north of the place. " I don't like to be crowded." And placing himself at the head of his men he waved his sword, and cried in a clear, calm voice, strikingly in contrast with his irate appearance : " Follow me." 1 Those clear accents seemed to thrill the men. They responded with a wild cheer, and driving his white horse to fu rious speed, Ashby burst the Federal line like a tornado. Before the furious onslaught, so sudden and desperate, the enemy's cavalry gave . i r r - , way. Asnoy was in iront oi ois line, cutting right and left with the sabre : and when in a few minutes afterward he came back, bis white horse dancing on all four fet, as the nervous hand reined him in amid a shower of balls, his face was calmer; for the moment he seemed satisfied. He continued to retire slowly, and reached the suburbs of the town. The enemy did not at once more forward. The Confederate cavalry passed through, and it was not until I reached the south; ern suburbs that I missed Ashby. Turning I saw bira seated on his white horse in the middle of Loudon street, looking Quietly at the Federal cavalry and infantry pouring into the place. It is impossible to conceive anything more calmly indifferent than his attitude. He teemed to bare taken his place there to witness some peaceful pageant, and to regard the advance of the Federal mas.ea, now nearly in contact with him, with lancnid curiosity. All at once some shots were fired at him, but he took no notice of t hero. This seemed to enrage the enemy, and a de tachment charged bim at full gallop, fir ing as they came. Ashby waved his hat around his head, uttered a cheer, and then, drawing bis revolver galloping off, firing as he went He had nearly reached the suburbs, ' IlnV II MM MEMPHIS. TENNESSEE. MONDAY EVENING, OCTOBEH 29. when suddenly I saw two Federal caval rymen issue from a side street, and post themselves in the middle of the street to intercept him. I rode rapidly forward to warn him of his danger ; but it wag not necessary. He turned, saw them, and charged the two men, with a glow of un mistakable 'pleasure on his features. One fell, shot through the heart; then his barrels being all emptied he seized the second by the throat I then witnessed one of those speela cles which are supposed to be confined to romance. Borne on at a furious speed npon his powerful white horse, Ashby dragged his adversary clear out of bis saddle, never relaxing bis clutch, and in a moment was beyond pursuit, still drag ging his prisoner by the side of his borse. A cheer rose from his men as Ashby released the prisoner, and coolly looked to the disposition of his command. His face was again calm ; the sad expression had come back, and wben he said: "Well, Major, they .are laughing at us yonder, I suppose by thia time," his voice was as sweet and gentle as when speak ing of his dead brother. Romance of Mining Speculation. A Nevada correspondent of the Boston Advertiser relates the following: I am tempted here to mention a story current among the citizens of Austin, of two Englishmen who had been induced to purchase stock in the silver mines of the region, and who, upon inquiring as to the size and extent of Reese river, were informed that it was a " noble river, filled with duck and other wild fowl.' Sometime after, having determined to visit the scene of their mining invest ment, they started with the intention of combining profit with healthful amuse ment, and accordingly brought with them an India-rubber boat from which to shoot the "ducks and other wild fowl" when they should reach the river. The joke will be at once appreciated by all who have had the good or bad fortune to see Reese river. History does not record the feelings or expression of the two "eminent foreign capitalists" when the stage-driver pointed out to them with the butt of his whip a small ditch, which hardly requires a bridge to be crossed, and in which the sluggish water would hardly suffice for the necessities of a single energetic specimen of the duck tribe. I doubt, however, if their chagrin was much improved when they visited their mining purchase, and certainly they were in no worse plight than the speculator who, upon the commence ment of the Reese river excitement, ac tually built and caused to be transported overland, at a large expense, a huge furry-boat, which he intended should be the source of a fortune to him in carry ing passengers to and fro on. this same Reese river." The Virginia Bar. During the trial of H. Rives Pollard for trespass, the Richmond lawyers in dulged in some extraordinary bursts of eloquence. This case was a filthy one throughout and the eloquence ahout equal to ihe meretriciousness." Mr. Gil mer, State Attorney, behaved with pro priety, but the conduct of the opposing counsel was not as admirable as might have been. In a hyperbolical defense of a lost wo man, Mr. Robert Ould declared that " ber tears made her kin io our sisters wives and daughters." The Inquirer very properly asks how such coinpan sons are relished by the ladies of Rich mond. Mr. Ould, when asked for author ities by Mr. Gilmer, declined to " pester the jury with law books." Mr. Johnson, his colleague, when interrogated in like manner, proceeded to read a section of the code relating to public roads, wuicti he said he could, if he chose, introduce as argument, as he could also the adver tisement in a newspaper, or the first and last chapter of Genesis. He could take his argument from Ulsckstone or coke, Paul or Moses. Jesus Christ or Utxl Al mighty. These are about samples of the whole transaction, and do not speak well for the amenities of the Virginia bar. ' It is proper to add that the jurt could not agree, and, after some dispute, a volte prosequi was entered and wcnnlMl. DRX5PPJsjLcJbJ'H 1 N DRV O O Cfy??. V AFTITMX, isn.
