' AX0T11ERT0LICEMAN KILLED. t mm, m s. f Offlour We M. Ror Shot by Tom PrutUt, thl morning. About half-past four o'clock this mern- . . . . i' ' ing Walter M. Kogers, a poncrinan, while on duty at the corner of Market and Main streets was shot and instantly killed by a ' fireman named Themas Pruett It appears ' that Pruett and another fireman named Mike Maloney were out on a spree last night, and amnsad themselves in various ways. About four o'clock this morning they met couple of negroes and forced them to go down on their knees and beg for mercy, after which they were allowed to depart Shortly afterwards they mat officer James 8mith and used him quite roughly, taking his pistol away from him. After leaving Smith they proceeded on their course, and when at the comer of Market and Main streets, one ef them was heard to exclaim with an oath "There he is; that fellow's my meat I" Tbey then crossed the street to where Policeman Rogers was standing, Pruett having the pistol in his hand. On get ting cIobo Jo Rogers, Pruett put the pis tol close to his face, and interspersing his language with fearful oaths ordered him to get down on his knees and beg for mercy. The policeman refused to do so, stating that he would not go on bis knees to any man, Pruett then told him if he did not get down he would kill him, when Rogers made a movement in defense and Pruett fired,' the ball en tering the neck of the policeman just be low the chin and passing out at the back of his head. So close was Pruett to the murdered man at , the time ho Cred that soma of the blood spurted ip his sleeve and stained his shirt When arrested the bottom of his shirt sleeve was torn off. ' Maloney was with him the whole time, and has been ar rested for being accessory to the murder, Rogers was regarded as an efficient offi cer, was a native of New Jersey, twenty six years old, and has been a member of the police force about ono month. In the absence of the coroner, Esquire Moore hold an inquest on the body this morning at the first district stationhouse, the jury bringing in a verdict that do ceased came to his death by a pistol shot fired by Thomas Pruett Several wit nesses were examined, wbese testimony in regard to the murder was similar to the version above, and fixes the guilt upon the prisoners.
