A large au dience greeted Miss Lottit last night and testified by frequent and hearty applause appreciation of the entertainment afford ed them. For the first time in Mem' phis, John Brougham's draimitization from Dickens' " Old Curiosity Shop," of Little Nell, was produced, Miss Lotta sustaining the titlo role and tho " Mar chioness." One character being tho au tipodes of the other, tho personations af ford a better opportunity than junylhing ia which Miss Lotta has appeared to il lustrato her astonishing versatility. In one scene we are enraptured with dear "Little Nell," who looks and acts the angel-child Dickens so touchingly de pictsher; whilo in the next, tho little half-starved servant of " Sampson Brass, solicitor," whom " Mr. Swivelcr," in his light and airy way, insists upon terming the " Marchioness," is sufficiently comic to excite tho risiblcs of a hypo chondriac. The latter character was " Nan " once more, as that rcmarkablo torn-boy would appear, after having fared sumptuously on air a month or two. Lotta s "Little Nell was charm' ing in every ws.y, With the Good-fyr Nothing, Female Detective, and other of her plays, in our mind, we could not avoid anticipating another revelation of tbe inimitably droll characteristics of which Lotta is brim full; but her face was that of tbe veritable "Little Nell" whom " Grandfather Trent " wor shipped:' and the voice which but nigbt or two ago gaL'iy rang with the " Hoop-de-doden-do " trembled with pathos. "Nan" passed from view for angelic " Little Nell," sweet as she must have appeared when urgiagthe old man to leave London fonsver, "walk through country places, sleep in fields and under trees, and never think of money again, or anything tluitlcau make you sad, but rest at nights, and have the sun and wind upon our faces iu the duy, and thank God togebhar." There is something inexpressibly sweet in this character, which only those who have read of LittleNell,or witnessed the drama can appreciate. We dc ubt if there could be an improvement in Lotta's "Mar chioness." It is irresistibly comic from tbe moment when, li ke a veritablo little Puss, she perches on the stool and long ingly eyes " P.raBs' " mutton log, until humor gives -way to the apotheosis. Mr, Hillerton a "Dick bwiveler was very fine. Ilere was opportunity for the lofty soun ding periods with which that astonishing young Cockney was wont to regale his friends. In some portions there r as a lack of the devil-may-care hich. Dick " always pushed forward, but iew make more out of the character. Aa "lirass" Mr. France added to the enviable reputation already achieved. In "makeup" ha was Dickensish all over, and those familiar with that writer found no difficulty in locating him. Miss Fanny - Picrson mado all out of "Mrs. Jarley" that tho dramatization affords; Mr. Mitchell's " Grandfa' ther Trent" and Mr. FeTguson's " Ned," (which Brougham changes from " Fred ") were fair. But by all odds the most perfect personation by any member of the company was Mr. Anderson's "Quilp." He was the dwarf in stature, with the head and body of a giant. Tbe black, restless, cunning eye the coarse, hard beard the ghastly smile the strag gling, colorless fangs in his ugly mouth the grizzled black hair the costume so befitting to render its possessor even more ghastly, if possible, were there, representing "Quilp" just as Dickens' inimitable pen drew the portrait Tho personation matched the " make up." Of all ghastly villains he was the most ghastly. His presence caused one to shudder, and his voice and actions started the cold chills. Mr. Anderson may justly feel proud of his achievement. 'Little Nell will be repeated to-night. Another Fire at Ritlet, Tens. Tho Hickory Wyllii Hieh wuyiuuii Captured anil UuHged. , Tbe particulars of tbe daring adven turestf a modern Dick Turpin, in the vicinity of Hickory Wythe depot, have from time to time reached tbe publio through our columns. His exploits an insensibility to danger recall to mind th period when every road was lined with footpads, and " stand and deliver became a familiar sound to travelers. . fow days ago we mentioned that Mr. Greenleaf, whom tbe robber compelled to atrip in the woods, had, with friends, met him ; that shots were exchanged, the highwayman, after expending the con tents of bis repeater, coolly turning off into the woods and escaping. But another, the last and bloodiest chapter in the eventful drama, is now to be recorded. On Sunday a man came to the first Btation this side of Wyth depot, and complained to some gentlo men present that he had been robbed i the woods. Among those who listene to his story was Mr. Alfred Battle, who it will be romcmbered, was shot at from the roadside, a day or two following Mr, Greenleaf s adventure. It seems that Mr. B., whom tho robber was rapidly approaching when frightened away by the sudden appearance of tho horse men who came up, noticed that couplo of tho unwelcome visitor's fingers were missing. While the man was telling his story on Sunday, ho observed a sim lar defect in that membor. A closer glance caused him to recognize the fca' turcs, and in a moment the alleged vie tim of a robbery was in tho grasp of two strong men. Mr. Battle had not mistake his man. The prisoner confessed that he had not only shot at him, but bad forced GreonJeaf, to strip,. and sent the threatening letter. He added that he did not desire to kill Mr. G. ; merely do sired to friglitcn a littlo money out of him. ; n ' If his actions .could longer bavo sur prised any one, the, witnesses of tbe unexpected denouement would doubtless have been startled at this, the most reck' less of his exploits. , But it seemed only a matter of course. He had been hunted in the thickets and swamps by armed men and bloodhounds, and eluded them, Believing he could appear among the people, and by tolling a pitiful talo be re gurded us but another of the victims ot tho robber whose exploits had spread terror and amazement throughout tbe community, he adopted that method of further baffling pursuit.' Ho did not reckon upon the absence of a finger or two betraying him. It simply happened that Mr. Battle's eyes were sharp, and fulfilled their office even when bullets were whistling about their owner's head and tho robber's ruse failed. Somehow, the captured robber sud denly disappeared from the station, whither no one seemed to know. A fe curious ones started in search. Late in the afternoon the form of a man was seen dangling from a tree in a swamp, It was lifeless; and two of tbe fingers of the left hand were missing. This told the story. No further explanation was required. Judge Lynch bad been at work; and the highwayman, whose dur ng exploits had been narrated with bated breath at a thousand firesides, was a rigid corse. Aftwift witness had risen against him, and tho exccutionerstalked behind until the fatal moment arrived. Who sent the desperado into the Shadows ? Onv Vtrro Itobx Another of ' lila Wife, Threaten him aud in Shot owii. A tragic affray occuired on Poplar street yesterday afternoon, whose pause wai the oli'. story, over again. Henry Harrison (cwlored) had a wife, who was more attractive than loyal to her vows. A Lothario, known as Henderson Smith was the bosom friend of this dusky An selmo, and although the wife's eyes ahon with renewed luster in his presence, un suspecting Anselmo found no fault. II was willing! that her love should be tested. By' and by, the wife forsook ber lege for his friend, living with bim in open lewd nets. What could remit but emotions of revenge ? Last Friday the deserted hu band and treacherous friend mot, an hard words led to harder blows. A guar dian of the law intervened and a tragedy was prevented. Afterward Smith, smarting under the recolloction of tho affray, dotormined to soek the life of the man whose happiness he had wrecked. Arming himself, he yesterday afternoon sought Harrison, at, Payne's cotton pickery, on Poplar street where bo was employed. Mr. Payne drove him away, and to protect the establishment in future, procured double-barreled shotgun and placed bobind tbe front door. Later in the day Smith returned ; and espying tho object of his wrath, drew a pistol, evidently intending to firo without giving his adversary an opportunity of defendin himself. But Harrison was a momen too quick. He sprang forward, seized tbe gun, and in a moment a deatontng report announced tbe result Smith lay stretched on the pavement a corpse, the charge having entered the right tempi and penetrated the brain. Coroner Cotton's inquest developed that " Hen derson Smith came to bis death from gunshot wound in tho right temple, sai wonnd penetrating the brain, and pro ducing almost instant death, the gu being fired by tbe hands of Henry Harri son, in self-defense." Harrison, still armed with tbo gun, immediately disap pea'red, and has not been apprehendod Attend tho closing out sale of 72 Mack Brothers k Bon.v. C McClure, a clerk in the Bulletin office charged with using unbecoming language with reference to the Sisters of Charity The action was based on the complaint of Mr. J. P. Gallagher. Mr. McClure, in a published card, denied the charge, and denounced Mr. Gallagher. At the lime the latter was sick, and meanwhile Mr. McClure left the city on business, re turning on Saturday. Yeulorday after noon Mr. Gallagher sought McClure to compel a retraction or other satisfaction The two met in a Main street dry goods store, and after a few moments spent in parleying, Gallaghor knocked McClure down; then, after a profuse ventilation of more emphatic than elegant rhetoric wherein his views upon the Mc Clure question were freely expressed the irate Captain left, promising any satisfaction the other's honor might de mand. This, with a published statement and wholesale denunciation, is what " personal" card brought forth. We have determined to retire from business, tbcrcforo offer our stock of dry goods, etc., at remarkably low prices, Call and convince yourself before buying elsewhere.- Mace Brothers k Boiim, 72 2(U Muin street. Personal. Among the latest arrivals we are pleased to notice our genial young lriend and lormer lellow-cittzen, Captain Harvey Mathcs, of tbo Louis' ville Courier, who looks' the veritable picture of health. He will remain several days, and is stopping at the AVorsham. Mr. W. C. Potter, the well known Jefferson street druggist, has returned, after several weeks absence in the North. Captain John George Ryan, once an editor of the Pine Bluff Vindi cator, and the man who was once arrested here as Surratt and carried to Washing' ton as a prisoner, is in the city, on a return trip from Canada. Aar Ox ox the ltAMPAOk. A gigantic ox domiciled in Joyce's stable, on Adams street, astonished bis owner- and many others last night by a few pranks not generally attempted by bis species. The ide door of Winters' saloon opens into tbe stable. This his oxship forced, and ntering he scattered himself miscellane ously about the premises, overturning tables and chairs, and causing a general smash among the bottles and tumblers. Whether the hilarious old "cuss" im- ibed any of the "ardent" the saloon contained, we are not advised. Soon tiring of this he mizzled through the eor, and started across the street at a peed which would have astonished Muggins, ran acainst one of the peals of the Hardwick IIou", swurg around, and fell down the stairway into the sa loon. Tbe fall was too much for his bovine majesty, and prevented the exe cution of his original design ol marching nside and taking a drink. Editors Leduer: My attention las been directed to a card in your issue of last Saturday, over the signature of one Michael Nealis, in which, under the cap tion of "Tbo Late Caning Affair," he refers to a local of the Bulletin giving an account of an encounter between my self and Mr. Hardwick. I do not desire to refer to this affair. If he has, as he alleged, commenced a suit against me, I um prepared to meet it I have asked no favors at his or anybody's hands for a postponement I placed the affair in the hands of my attorney, Colonel Gantt, with instructions that I was ready to meet the matter at any time.
