' - The collections in police court amounted to $72 this morning. John Cannon has been held to bail, charged with obtaining a watch under false pretenses. y John Higging and Osley Napoleon are under arrest for stealing heavy shaft iron. ( A. Marre, who killed James Mala- testa, has failed to secure release from jail on habeas eorput. Mr. Wm. If. Perkins has recovered 12000 recently lost on the Memphis and Charleston railroad. An article in Sunday's Avalanche resulted in another " contempt" attach ment. Roll in another barrel. Jack Winters and Owen McPartland were not examined yesterday on the charge of killing &Hke Connell. In tho United States JCourt yester day S. Margarum, John Moffatt and M. H. Peebles, John L. Poston, Wm. Sims, Solomon Bieraon, J. L. WinGeld and John Clin ton, have been elected aldermen of Brownsville, Haywood county. The mud last night was succeeded this morning by cold weather and frozen ground. An attempt to snow was sud denly cheeked by the atmospheric change. To-day blue noses areat a pre. mium. Yesterday afternoon Captain J. J. DuBoee was committed to jail for con tempt on Judge Leonard's writ An application for release on a writ of habeas corpus was to have been beard before Judge Pierce, of the Common Law Court, at noon to-day. It strikes us that the contempt business is being rapidly run into the ground. A judge has no more right to use opprobrious epithets than any other man," and offers grOBS insult at his own personal risk. Last night the police discovered a small saw, manufactured from a butcher- knife, in one of tho station-house cells. It had doubtless been dropped down the grating by an outside confederate, but the early dincovery prevented its use. Onr friends oT the eleventh district could not have made better selections, and we hope the Conservatives elsewhere throughout the interior of the county will exercise equal judgment in the choice of representatives. What we want as delegates are good, true men, who will come to the Convention with the ihorou.h indorsement of their constitu ents, and determined to act for the best ialeresU of the Conservative party, re tardiess of all personal considerations. Livermore, General Superin tendent of the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad. As has already been an nounced, he returned on Saturday with his beautiful young bride, and the em ployes of the road resolved to signalize the event by a substantial testimonial of their appreciation of him as an officer and gentleman. This determination found shape in the purchase by tbem of a set of solid silver, lined with gold urn, tea and exffee pots, cream-pitcher, sugar-bowl and salver upon which was neatly engraved: "Inscribed and Pre sented to A. S. Livermore by the Em ployes of the Mississippi and Tennessee Eailrood, January 9, 18687' Besides, were a silver water-pitcher, knives and forks, butter and fruit knives, complete tea and dinner sets of the most elegant china, goblets, wine glasses, decanters, etc., and superb pair of pickle stands the latter the gift of Mr. Ben. K. Pul len, and inscribed: "A. S. Livermore from Ben. K. Pullen." Accompanying the gift of the railroad employes was the following " card," elegantly prepared at Lcddin's Commercial College, in imita tion of engraving, framed, and contain ing the name of every employe; A. S. Livrmor: The officers and employes of the Mississippi and Tennes see railroad take pleasure in availing themselves, on this happy occasion, to beg your acceptance of this token and the Buhstantials herewith, as a testimo nial of our appreciation of you, as a thorough gentleman and an efficient rail road officer. The presents, which had been selected with good taste by the accomplished wife of one of the chief officers of the road, were appropriately arranged in one of the parlors of the Gayoso. . Mr. and Mrs. T.ivnrmnre. unon arrival, were ushered in, little anticipating a reception of this character. A few words explained tne "j!ot," and after Mr- Livermore had recovered from his surprise, a pleasant hour was spent in congratulations. Wa anhioin Mr. Livermore s card. gracefully acknowledging the kind re membrance of his brother employes : The officers and . employes of the Mis sissippi and Tennessee railroad will please accept my heartfelt thanks for the handsome and valuable testimonials re ceived at their hands ; and let me assure each and all of them that the gift is ap preciated, especially as an expression of friendship and esteem from those with whom I have been long associated in business, and from whom I have ever received assistance and co-operation. It was declared that "when it shall appear to the satisfaction of the Govrnor that frauds and irregularities have intervened in the registration of ntnra in an eountv of this State, the Governor shall make known such fact and set aside said registration by procla mation ; d - Whereas, It bat been made to ap naar in tha aatisfaction of the Governor that frauds and irregularities have inter vened in tha registration Ot volar in the county of Shelby; Now, therefore, I, Wm. G. Brownlow, Governor of the State of Tennessee, by virtue of the power eonferredrand in dis charge of the duties imposed upon me by said act. do hereby set aside and declare null and void all registration of voters heretofore bad in said county of Shelby. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subaonbed my name, ana causea mu great seal of tho Stale to be affixed, at r- -. the Executive Department, I u B. in Nashville, this UUh day of , ' January, 18G8. By the Governor: - W. G. Brownlow. A. J. Fletcher, Sec'y of State. The'registration lawas framed to sub serve the interests of such scoundrels, as thewar has spawned into power in Ten nessee. The administration of the law in Shelby county has always been confided to men who hate Conservatives as the devil bates holy water, and have done everything in their power to prevent that class from registering. Every turn of the franchise crank has thrust Conserva tives from the polls ; and prior to the last election everything was nndorstood as working to a charm. But election day came and went, and the minwhom the respectable men of hie own. party de' nounced as a thief was beaten for Mayor Therefore "it has been made to appear to the satisfaction of tho Governor that frauds and irregularities have intervened in the registration of voters in Shelby county," which registration, by a sweep of his pen, is annulled. . . Failing to elect a thief Mayor is an "irregularity" Tennessee Radicalism will not brook. Failing to elect a thief Mayor is a "fraud" on the broad princi ple of robbery and wholesale scoundrel ism npon which Tennessee Radicalism is founded. ' , , This renders inevitable a new regis tration, which must be completed before the first Saturday in March. The Rad ical intent of this new registration is raud. Radicals blaok and white will be ground through the mill with lightning speed, while Conservatives will be regis tered as slowly as possible. The point is to force Radical numerical superiority at the polls. Brownlow does not annul the registration because ho deems it fraudu lent; but that hordes of hungry Radical place-seekers may be foisted into office in defiance of the wishes of the people. The State was originally "reconstructed" by scoundrelism; Brdwnlow was twice "elected" by seouuJreliatii ; hie-Legislature existB by force of scoundrelism ; the franchise and registration laws were conceived in, the direct interests of scoundrelism; and Brownlow's latest proclamation is but a chip off tha old block.
