The following wail of aof,uih comei from the Chicago Tribunt of the Cth of May .... r. The unwelcome intelligence comes from Washington that Johnson may not be convicted itnd remo-ed. It ii asserted that Mr. Fessenden has publicly an nounced that he is preparing an ariu nient showing why the acting President should be acquitted upon the first ar ticles; he regarding the other Republi can Senators who, it is alleged, agree withMr. Fessenden, arid who will vote against a conviction. There are enough of these Republican Senators, it ii feared, with the Democrats, to prevent con-ic- Our private diipatches from Washing ton for several days have been painting to the same uutoward result, and, though there is no-positive knowledge as to the ' Totes of the Senators whose names are ' S3 freely used, yet the probabilities are that in case two or three Republican Senators of ability and high standing op pose conviction, others of smaller cali ber will shelter themselves behiod these, and, bv their votes, acquit Andrew John son. It only requires seven Republicans votinz with the Copperheads to defeat impea huient. It is further stated in the dispatches end private letters that prejudice against Wade, who would become Johnson s successor, has very much to do with the disinclination to convict. Fessenden is known to bitterly dislike Wade. If it were not known what Senator was to ' become Johnson's successor, there would be little doubt of the conviction of John- 'The special friends of Mr. Wade have been hasty in disposing of the future Three months ago Mr. Wad was a Sen ator whose successor, Mr. Thormau, had been elected, and who had but an unex pired session to linger on the public stage. The moment impeachment be came a fact, his importance grew apace. He was President in the future. His friends determined that the Chicago Convention should nominate him for the Vice-Presidency. This ring, in its zeal, has not had the decency to wait until Wade was Presi dent before they have selected from their own number a Secretary of the Treasury in tbn new Cabinet, under whose auspices the Republican party will be converted into a mere manufacturers' association to plunder the public. But there has been another piece of mischief going on, in addition to these schemes, which has done much barm. We refer to the conspiracy to increase the tariff tar on, the consumers of im ports. Wade is believed to be the "head center" of the movement If impeachment shall fail, and the great criminal escape ejectment from the White House, the country may thank the office-bunting "friends" of Wade who had parceled out his patronage, and that Eastern ring who bad whetted their teeth for a deeper bite into the Seta of the rionrile.
