presiding nt nn annual conference where
Mr: rtwnnli was a tnetnoer. i?e
food Bishop was a very grave man in
his department, nnd looked with holy
horror upon all joks and laughter em
anating from ministers of the (tospel.
Mr. CartwriRbt specially annoyed him,
for he seldom spoke fire minutes without
throwing the whole conference into un
controlled mirth. At last the biibop
determined to reprove Brother Cart
wright for fun-making, and, just as the
punster was sitting down amid the ex
cited Uughlr which hia short langh had
created, lii.hop II. arose and asked him
to lead the Conference in prayer. Cart
wright did so with nppatent delight, but
Tery soon afterward repeated the offense
by raising a general burst of applause.
The Bishop, resolved on curing the evil,
instantly repeated his request for Brother
C. to prey. A second prayer of consid
erable length and commendable fervor
followed, but in a few minutes the incor
rigible joker was on his feet, firing his
itticisms with greater effect than ever.
By this time the chairman saw that
draliing Cartwright to prny would never
cure him, and Unit he must shift sail.
So, fixing his eyes full upon him, he
asked, in a deep, solemn voice:
"Brother Cartwright, are you growing
in grace?"
The refractory preacher evidently en
joyed this cfttechisra hugely, and lifting
his spectacles into hia tangled hair and
imitating the grave tones of the bishop,
he replied :"
" BlBhop, I think I am, ia spots."
