If in the day a of Jefferson and Jack son a foreign prince had visited our shores, it would have been their aim to illustrate Republican principles by the plainness of his reception. . There would have been no display to attract the gaze of the mass, no intertwining of republi can and despotic banners, and no act permitted that compromised the stern simplicity of our republican habits. In those days the Deir?crats of America desoised the tyrants of Europe, and r-nrnmUcrntcii the condition of their down-trodden subjects. So recently ont of a war to establish their independence, rvprhnnn thev took a nreiudiced view r r - of thin and reearded all men not baptized in their Republican faith as enemies of their country. But when such a man as Lafayette visited these shores, there were oo honors too great, too costly, to be paid to him. One of the grandest men this country' has produced, and certainly its finest intel lect, stood up and welcomed the illus trious visitor as the " hero of two conti nents." Wherever he appeared, the people welcomed him with demonstra tions of affection. He had stood by Washington through those dreadful seven years of war. There was soul in all this. The honors paid him were not for the sake of display, but as testimo nies of the veneration and love tht peo ple bore him. We did, with a sporadic start, heap' honors on Louis Kossuth. But that was when every citizsn of America was proud of his country and devoted to its institntions when everybody's heart went out to those in other lands who were struggling to cast off intolerable burdens and to stand be fore the world as freemen. 0, well, it is different now, and the difference is scarcely marked. We have changed, and he who does not perceive that there is little of the old Washingtonian, Jef fersonian, Jacksonian spirit remaining to us, is indeed very blind. On this side the great chasm of war a new world rolls around us. On the other side are buried, as the great and good Major Donelson once remarked to ui, all that the patriot loved. Traditions, memories, in stitntions, habits, loves, honors, glory, all lie buried there amid blasted fields and charred remains. Liberty, and that high sense of honor that were once the felicity of our men and institutions, are left on the other side. The chasm of the war is a lake of fire. It can never bs crossed, and that which is left over there can never be brought over here. , It may be all right. There is nothing in the character of our Government now that should repel a prince, or refute to him honors that, a long time ago, were only paid to heroes. The young Prince Alexis seems to be an amialilc and in telligent person, and should be received with courtesy, because he is a repre sentative of a government with which we are at peace, but to spend millions of money for display on his account, and shout ourselves hoarse at the sight of him, is unbecoming a sensible people. If we are republicans, let ns exhibit to him our spirit in the manner of receiving him. No display is necessary, and certainly no great expense. En thusiasm will be out of place, for there is nothing in him or his government to excite it. Yes, we have gone away from the good old time. THE GRAHT WAS. - The New York Sun is a rankling thorn in the side of Grant. Its warfare on him is incessant. Before the report of one gun dies away, another comes boom ing over the country. It says, in a late issue, that " as a political leader he has failed; as President of the United States he his destroyed the reputation which he gained as a military man during the rebellion. Instead of making friends he has lost them. Instead of wisely leading the action of the Republican party he has sought to engage it in dis reputable and fatal jobs, such as the San Domingo swindle and the purchase of the telegraph lines. The only good thing credited to bim is the reduction of the public debt, accomplished by enor mous, unnecessary, and most oppress ive UAaiius; and a!! the credit that is due to any individual fur that is due to Secretary Boutwell alone." It is the opinion in legal circles that the decision will be adverse to its constitu tionality. This amendment, it will be remembered, makes a presidential par don prima facie evidence 'of disloyalty, and renders it incumbent upon all pur ties who bring suits before the Court of Claims, and possess such pardon, to prove their loyalty. 1 ' ' Johs W. Fornet, who speaks for Grant, says: "Our Government has demanded of Sapin, first, to apologize for the boarding and searching, of the Florida; second, to disavow the act of the officer: third, to punish him; fourth, damages. Soain must fulfill these 'requirements. If she declines then other measures may be resorted to, bnt not before." Fbisk Blair, in a recent speech, said h.t if a nnmnerat should be elected to the Presidency, he would not be allowed to take his seat, and that unless some thing is done for the South, "the white people will leave it. ' , The killing of Fisk by Stokes was one of the coolest assassinations on record. He should Lave been hanged on the spot where he committed the great crime. As it is, he will go free. M Thkbe is a report that a war with Spain is imminent. All that depends on how it would effect Grant's chances for re-election. Giant keeps the Rev. Dr. Newman near him to do his praying. The song, "His Heart was True to Poll," by Miss Thompson, was finely and dramatically rendered.
