The murder of 'American citizens by the Spanish authorities of Cuba was the subject of much comment .throughout the city to-day. The horrible massacre excites the greatest indignation among all classes of our citizens.' To-day Esquire Miller sent W. J. Wooten, a youth, to jail without bail to await an examination on the charge of attempting to dispose of a mule sup posed to have been stolen. The investi gation will be had on Monday. The proprietor of the Leixier will put up two presses at the Exposition, from which tba daily edition of the paper will be thrown off. Last year the Ledger department was quite an at traction to strangers who had no idea as to how newspapers were printed. A shooting match at double birds and for a prize of $200 in gold, will be gotten up by the Bluff City Shooting Club du- ring the Exposition. The club will ar range the match at its meeting next Tuesday evening. The contest will bring out many of the best shots in this and adjoining States. The bayou Gayoso is by nature adapted for the purpose of sewerage. It should be made the great main duct through which the filth of the city may be dis posed of. The title to the land lying between the banks of the bayou Gayoso is in the city or in the original propria tors. The value of the land reclaimed by making the sewer would bn almost equal to the necessary outlay; at least so insists a correspondent. As linguists the editorial fraternity of our city can claim a high position. Hannah Ringrose filed her petition to-day in the First Chancery Court, al leging that she and Michael Ringrose intermarried in this city in June, 1872, and that not long after the defendant be came dissipated, a street loafer, and commenced a system of persoual abuse and violence, beating the petitioner and threatening her life. The defendant is now confined in tha county jail to an swer before the Criminal Court for thit violence and inhuman treatment. ' A Vicksburger and bride arrived in the city yesterday, and put op at one of our leading hotels. The bridegroom at tended the theater with tome friends, but being induced to drink the health of the bride rather too often became Rip Van Winklish. He was arrested, and unfortunately a pistol was found in his possession, which left mm witn a State case on his hands, and placed him in a position requiring a heavy bond to answer before the Criminal Court, or in default of bond to sleep in the station house during the night. In the mean time the bride knew not why the object of her affections lingered or was absent. Upon the delicate surroundings of the case being explained to the Chief of Police, be, being a married man, knew how it was himself as to the absolute ne cessity of husbands being at home, and concluded that as the unfortunate was a stranger and just married he had tome excuse for being intoxicated with joy, however, instead of vile whisky. The Chief delivered a sound moral lecture, and the bridegroom was permitted to depart in peace. Baakraptey Bale, Messrs. Arkansas river ' continues at low tide, with only twenty-tight inches on the iboaloet bar, liusineta on the landing thit moroina: wat quite active with several boatt in port receiving and discharging. White arrived last niht from Napoleon with the blue ribbon trip of the season. Her cargo includi-d T.lj bales of cotton, '.'0 bags teed eotton, MM tackt teed, and a large number of pas sengers. She returns to NapoUoa and the bends this evening. The Carrie V, Kountz passed up morning for St. Louis. The Henry Ames arrived thit morning from St. Louis, with a large cargo of freight on herself and barge. The prin cipal iterr.t of her cargo are 5000 ;cks corn, 1000 barrelt (lour, &00 dry barrels, 300 bead stock, and 50 families of gypsies with their wagons and traps. She adVlt here 750 bales of cotton, which was a cured for her by Caot. Dick Lightburne. She had also a large passenger list, and expected to get off at 11 a.m. for New Orleans. The Sam J. Hale, for Cincinnati; Ouachita-Belle, for Memphis;' Future City and barges, for St. Louis, left New Orleans last evening. The superb passenger steamer Pat Cleburne, Captain Wis, Ashford in Com-1 mand, is the regular Saturday Helena and Friar't Point packet leaving this evening at sharp five, attending to all way business in the bends. Menrfl. Davis and Clark are her gentlemunl.r clerks. The Grand Tower, Captain Lennox, arrived during the morning from St. Louis with a full cargo of Western pro ducts. She is the regular Saturday An chor Line packet for Cairo aud St. Louis, and leaves the elevator this even ing at five o'clock. Her officers are competent and careful boatmen. Billy Dill, the passenger agent of the line, will attend to all wishing a pleasant trip to St. Louis.- Dan Rice has chartered the steamer Argosy at Louisville to transfer his cir cus down the river. The Kinney and Katie P. Kountz left St. Louis last evening for New Orleans. The John Kyle leaves St. Louis to day for New Orleans. The cotton rate from Shreveport to New Orleans is three dollars per bale. The Frank Forest has laid up for the present. As soon as business opens nut better in the upper coast trade she will be brought out again. The fine steamer West Wind will con tinue to make regular trips between bere and Osceola, attending to all way business. Captain W. P. Walker returned to- Cincinnati last evening on the Arlington. The Exporter and John A. Scudder will pass up for St. Louis to-day. The Lady Lee will pass down to day for Red river. The Mary Housten passed up last evening for Louisville with a fair up stream trip. . The City of Helena passed down for Vicksburg last night, after putting off here seven hundred packages of freight. The splendid passenger steamer A. J. White, Captain Mark Cheek in com mand, is the regular Saturday Napoleon and bends packet, leaving at 5 a.m. The White will promptly attend to all way business in the bends. Messrs. Wildberger, Sharpe and Booker, a trio of clever gentlemen, have charge of the Office. ! The Andy Baum is due to-morrow from Cincinnati, and will leave on Tues day with a return trip. Captain Ed. Cobb will make engagement! for her. Captain W. B. Miller will introduce into the Cincinnati and Memphis trade the large side-wheel steamer Ben Frank lin, which has been one of the favorite packets of the mail line between Louis ville and Cincinnati. The splendid passenger Steamer Legal Lender Captain John D. Elliott in com mand, leaves this evening at 5 p.m. for all points on White river through to Jacksonport. The Legal Tender is s good and safe carrier, has elegant pas senger accommodations, and is in charge of experienced officers. Walker Out law, a gentleman who is noted for his urbanity and uniform kindness, has charge of the office. Captain Frank Oakes has quit the hotel business at Cincinnati, and will resume command of his old packet, the Alaska. The father, of Luther T. and J. B Woods was run over and killed at St. Louis on Tuesday by a transfer wagon. Cook Creighton, formerly of Memphis, but late of Denison, Texas, has been sick in St. Louis, but is convalescing. The elegant Anchor line packet Capl tol City, Captain O'Neal, leaves the ele vator Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for Vicksbure and the bends. She hat ta- perior passenger accommodations. The Batesville is plying from Newport at the Cairo and Fnlton railroad cross ing to Des Arc and Clarendon, on White river. Captain Dick Lovt, at one time Secre tary of the St. Louis and Memphis Packet Company, at St. Louis, is re ported quite ill at Hot Springs, Ark. The Tom Jasper will pass np to-morrow morning for St. Louis. The old reliable White river packet Legal Tender came in at nine a.m. from White river with 5C0 bales of cotton, 600 tackt seed, a lot of miscellaneout freight, and a good number of ordert for merchandise. She returnt thit evening at five p.m. She landed at the elevator to put off her cotton. The H. S. Turaer and Probatco are due np to-morrow from New Orleans, en route for Louisville. The Arkansariver remaial too low for butinett. The Ilallia and Fort Gib ton are the only boatt at present thai navigate that itreatn. There it consid erable cotton along the bankt of the river awaiting thipment to market. The Cleburne had 191 balea of cotton and flta sacks of teed. The Tbomat It. Sherlock arrived at ton a.m. from Louisville with a tplendid trip of freight and passenger!. She adds here 750 bales of cotton, and will back out thit afternoon for New Or leant. The repairs on the St. Francis will be completed by Monday. She will then commence receiving freight, and will leave on Tuesday at & p.m. and make regular trips in the Helena and Friar't 1'uiut trade, leaving Memphit oa Tues days, Thursdays and Suturdays. Tbe St. Francis has been made staunch, aid has had a thorough overhauling and r en ervating, and when the starts on the track will be in complete repair. Un der the guidance and management of Captain Cummings and Captain EoJand sta will not be long in regaining her old popularity and become a favorite in tha trade. The above gentlemen are expe rienced tteamboatmen, and they enter the trade with a determination to please the public.and expect to win favor with all by a .prompt and strict attention to business aod the interests of the ship pers of Memphis and the bends. Capt. Cummings will be aided by a compe tent crew and careful officers. We pre dict a successful season for her. He shipped two carloads of ties on tba Shtrlock to day. A welcome it extended to Captain Jas. -O. Durff, who yesterday donned the rep ortorial harness and became an itemhufter for the Eveniso Ledoeb, vice H. L Smith, removed. The bril liant journalistic reputation enjoyed by Captain Durff i" years gone by, together with his long experience as a chaste and scholarly para.graphist, will cause it to be his own faul t it he fails to sustain the same distinction in the fature that he achieved in tha past.
