Whether tke differences between res iJent Grant and some of his recent ad visers will be permanent, or easily recon ciled to preserve the Republican party in tact, remains to be seen. The President is evidently restive under the dictation of Morton, Cameron, Butler and others, who assume to be the pillars of the ad ministration. He is no doubt casting about with an eye to the next Presiden tial election, and it is not a matter of great concern to him whether he is re-elected by the orthodox Radicals or the Grangers of the West and theSouth. Certain great causes are at work which will make the next national election one of peculiar interest. The Democrats proper are hardly in the field. They made a mistake, as we have always maintained, in goinc over to a Republi can ticket without fully meaning it. The national Democratic party has been routed, scattered and demoralized. Yet the elements still exist, and true Dem ocratic principles are bound to bo adopted by the next great party that may ar'ue under whatever name. We care no great deal for names. Whig would sound as well as Democrat, and Conservative would answer as well as either. It must be conceded that the reform and anti-monopoly movement in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas and other Northwestern States, has made considerable headway, while is Ohio the Democrats have the State. In Texas it is the same. Vir i . i t. , on a has 1USI eiecieu iemutimn. slul . i United States Senator, aud great gains . . .l I h.m heen made in every place where fair elections have been held. President Grant is tired of the party harness, and -hriwa a strone inclination to turn aga ust the curonic leauers aim hLself along with the people. In some States the opposition to rings, monopolies, subsi h;b. nroBcrmtiou and the adminn- tmtion will Drobably be arrayed under the banner of " Reform," or with such local movements as may be best adapted to promote the welfare of the largest number of the people. The Democrats of Tennessee are largely in the ascend ancy if only united, and if let alone they will naturally fall into one solid pha lanx. The Lediier has ardently sup ported every Democratic ticket put into the fieU since 1HC5, aud it proposes in future, aB in the past, to be not only in dependent and fearless, but consistent. It rests with the people to organize parties, and with journals to support proper movements. While this has bepn the most ultra party or;;an pub lished as a daily, with one exception, in the State, it has usually reserved the right, and will hereafter, to criticise, even its own party, freely. This is essential to a healthy outgrowth of pub lis opinion, and it is a right which we propose to exercise. Parties are often indebted to papers, but the papers sel dom owe anything to parties. This paper, for instance, has stood by every nomination regularly put in the field by the Democratic parly since its first issue, but has never been subsidized, and never asked the party or any candi date for a cent; in fact, the balance due is on the other side of the books. This, however, is of no material consequence to the public, but it may be a matter of greater moment to our friends to be as sured that we shall be true to them and to true Democratic principles, as in the past, whatever chaos may take place in national partieB. As to State politics it is assured that party lines will be strictly drawn, and the people once muro called upun to n-pel the inroads of corruption aud usurpation. A late number of the Clarksville Chronicle coucludej a long article under the caption of "The Next Governor" with th following para graphs: For one, we shall endeavor to shape our course by honest conviction, preter ing to support the nominee ol a popu lar convention rather than a self-nominated demagogue, and more willing to risk the possible blunders of such a con vention than the certain ills of Radical rule invited to return by senseless d; cord and fuul ambition. Upon these the North looks with a secret feeling of con tempt for a people who lack the common instinct of sH-preservation, and would rather endure wrong aud dishonor than unite to avert both. It is too early to open the next cam paign, but not too soon for the people to b-gin to consider the situation and to resolve that the disgraceful d feat of the last election shall not be repeated in the next. Tlire will be no lack of candi dates, and the Convention system must he relied upon to produce harmony, or a Jdirsl victory will be the fruit of our luL'j in trusting selfish demagogues. This is a sunerb volume of six hun dred and nineteen pags, printed on fine paper aud brilliantly illustrated with scenes from the Reformation. It gives with great accuracy a vivid description nf the nrinciDal events and oharacters of the Reformation, and acquaints the reader with the principles by which they were actuated. The work of the Reform ers is set forth to the life, and they move before us as living actors in that great drama. It is written not so much to give a connected history sb to relate the most strikinn instances of martyrdom, which is done in a manner that brings out the beauty and dramatic interest of the subject. It gives the story of the Vaudois Christians, the Huguenots and the Enttlish church, and is told concisely and briefly. It if. a series of facts coucisely elated, and not a Dartisan attack upon any church, and is a very thrilling book. Thus far it has met a very rapid sale in this city, and will hereafter be found in many a well selected library. To night that fine English actor, T. C. King, will appear as " Hamlet " at the theater. Mr. King has for years been a leading actor on the Dublin and London stages, and ia regarded as one of the finest Shaks perean delineators living. In this country he has made a splendid reputa tion in the roles of " QuaBimodo," "Hamlet" "Othello," "Richelieu," etc. His conception of Hamlet is not that of Booth, whose Dane is a pale, quiet student and a calm philosopher. Mr. King is more after the styles of Fechter aud Sulviui. He endows the Danish Prince with physical intensity, as well as mental one momeut sinking to the lowest depths of despair, the next wild in his passion and physically grand. The press of New York, St. Louis and other cities uronounce Mr. King to be a great actor, and in many roles su perior to Booth, Forrest, Barrett, tech ter or Davenport. Memphians have a taste for the legitimate drama when it is presented by the hand of a master, and to-night we doubt not but that the theater will be filled by a fushionnble and critical audience. Ma.houeradk. Next Thursday night the bal masque given by the Confede rate Relief Association for the benefit of the orphans will come off at the Exposi tion building. The committees make an ear nest appeal to the public in behalf of this entertainment. Every citizen, whether attending or not, Bhould pur chase a ticket, and aid to that extent the orphans, for whoBe benefit, this ball will be given. Dancino ACADFrfir. Mons.
