Ex-President' Johnson indorsed the Bartlett. platform, and also indorses the State Democratic and Conservative platform on which stands Gen. Porter, Oyster signs are appearing all around the city. There is a tradition that, be cause the month of September has the letter "r" in it, it is proper to eat oys ters to morrow. Messrs. Schoolfield & Hanauer re ceived to-day eleven bales of new Ar kansas cotton, which was taken charge of by Brooks Pleasants, the. cotton shed man of the house. Memphis has demonstrated thai the Nicolson pavement is a costly failure, The General Council now propose to re pair the wooden pavement by laying their heads together." Next month will be the wedding month in Memphis. At least half a dozen marriages that have been post poned for the summer season will be celebrated within the ensuing ten days. Henry Davis, the negro that attempted to commit a rape on two white girls at the Peabody, was bound over by 'Squire Winters this morning in ten thousand dollars bonds, and was sent to jail in default of tame. The General Council, after a stormy session last Saturday, foiled to come to any agreement so as to repair the Nicol son pavement. The Council adjourned, but will meet in regular monthly session next Wednesday. The Chinese residents of Memphis are generally donning-American apparel, but under their stovepipe hat yet re mains carled np the omnipresent pig tail. It is to be hoped that no scandal will break out in the future, but should inch a thing be suspected 'let the Plymouth people wash their dirty linen at home, and not hang it out on the world's clothes line to dry. The New Orleans papers speak of the health of that city as being almost un precedentedly good at this season of the year. The Picayune says: "We have none of those malarial disorders usual in the summer months, no dangue, breakbone, bilious or other fevers of that family. The public health has continued excellent, and at this advanced period of the season, we are justified in saying there is no danger of a change." QThe fire department tried a new inven tion on Madison street last Saturday afternoon. It was a patent valve, the invention of a Baltimore fireman. The pipeman can shut off the water at will and the returned pressure drives the water back through a valve near the engine into the cistern. The nozle can be carried through a building and turned loose at will, thereby saving property from damage by water. The depart ment regurds the invention as a success- In Saturday's Ledger we stated that the editor of the Southern Catholic was of opinion that "the present common school system either teaches heresy or infidelity, and he claims the right to have religion without education, and no education unless religion is with it. The paragraph should read: " Religion with education, and no education unless religion with it." We do not care to discuss the full bearing of this proposi tion with reference to our splendid pub lie school system, which, in our opinion, is a credit to the State. At the monthly meeting of the Gen eral Council, to be held next Wednes day, the question as to the Captain of the" No. 4 engine will come up. The Chief of the Fire Department and about twenty Councilmcn and Aldermen favor the appointment of WcMahou, the first pipeman, who of right goes into office by promotion, but the Mayor has some pet to put in just because the " papers and General Council " favor the best man. The Mayor likes to take a bout at the Council and the newspapers occasion ally, but he has invariably come out of the conflict with a sore head. If ana. Iters; and the Iog-. In New York the protection given to the man and brother of saddle' colored complexion does not come up to the standard of the civil rights bill. The negro is given more power, politically and socially, here than at the North. Some weeks Bince a New York man who kept an ice cream establishment started a Iresh cider branch to hie house. In order to convince the public that the cider was fresh as represented he had a portable cider press put up in his establishment, from which the juice of the apple flowed all day long. It was worked by a treadle, and the en terprising proprietor adapted it to dog power. An endless platform was fixed up similar to those horse treading power euw mills, and a large dog worked away daily masking apples and squeezing out cider for the temperance people of Gotham and Brooklyn, as well as the Plymouth church congreation. But there is a humane demon in New York by the name of Monsieur Berg, who is a monomaniac on the subject of cruelty to animals; that is, quadrupeds, insects, etc. He is at the head and tail of the Association for the Prevention of Cru elty to Animals, and his sensitive soul bleeds when the sportsmen of New York shoot pigeons, have races, a dog fight, a chicken tourney or anything of that character. The dog that made the cider attracted the lunatic's attention, and at once he had the proprietor arrea-ted on the charge of cruelly to animals. The man was fined, and dog power had to be dispensed with, it not having been proven cleurly that the dog was worked under the eight hour system, had three meals a day furnished by the fashion able restaurant of the city and was paid sufficient wages for ita labor. Net knowing the sex of the dog we use the pronoun "its" by way of descrip tive designation. The proprietor had his motor change from dog pwer to negro power, ana now employs a nine darky to walk the tread-mill during the day and furnish Berg and ether lunatics sweet cider. Berg forget that a negro is also an Animal and saould come un der the law relating to "cruelty to t.ni mals, etc.," but Berg and other members of the lunatic socisty care more for dogs, horses, pigeons, etc., thau they do for the African bmtber who has been made a ward of the nation, and around whom the Northern Radicals seek to fling the a-gis of "civil rights," which gives all I the legal and social rights to the black man, and presents the white man with all tbe "wrongs." Stoce negro power has been intro dsoed into the cider business Berg has been happy; the dog' has been protected and rescued from a life of toil, but the negro took its place.. Berg is a believer in the doctrines of Pythagoras, "that tbw souls of men are often transferred intoAVe bodies of beasts;" and this is clearly proven when we see the affinity or attractVir, (Plymouth churcbism) springing np between Berg and the dog. Monsieur Berg's nxt step will be to get some Congressional lunatic to offer a bill throwing civil rjgVg around the quadrupeds, and investing- Jbem with the right to vote, hold office, sue-and be sued in courts, etc In New Yorltthe dog is thought more of tbanthe negro. s Freta Ofatrra Arrlvedlll Madame Vincent has received fresh Baltimore oysters. Last Saturday evening when the shades of night were falling fast a Main street clothing man sat in front of his store at the edge of the pavement for the pur pose of inhaling the fresh breezes of heaven and cooling off after his daily labor. He was talking to a lady at the time, but about that time two elegantly dressed damsels walked over from Court Square and stopped in front of the clothing man. After a .few pleasan words had passed one of' the girls said " You are the son I have been look ing for," and drew from beneath ber dress a rawhide and struck him across the face half a dozen times ere he could arise from his seat. He then threw up one hand to shield his face, when the other woman caught his hand and held it down while her companion laid " on Macduff." In a few minutes a crowd gathered aud the girls hopped away, apparently 'satisfied with the pnnish ment they bad inflicted on the man, who had offended them in some manner not known to the public. The clothing man instead of "cooling off," as he had do- sired, was " warmed up " considerably and retired homeward a sadder if not a wiser man. Five cents will bay a Risa Concha at Coleman's.
