The Lady of Lyons, with Edwi Adams as "Claude Melnotte," at the theater to-night. The Exposition attracts crowd nightly. It is a pleasant place to visit and promenade. Yesterday was the. anniversary of th dispersion and arrest of the Jacob: Club of Paris in 1794. The Arkansas Legislature is in session and to day the new State ofiicers will be installed at Little Rock. The plumbers are putting in steam pipes in the different court rooms, halls and offices in the new court-house. Dr. Manning, editor of the Roanoke News, Weldon, North Carolina, was in the city to-day en route for home from a trip to Virginia. The beaux and belle who contemplate romantic matrimony will go to the thea ter to-night and witness the troubles of the Lady of Lyons. At the Recorder's Court to-day Tim Finlay was on trial for stealing a pair of fifteen-cent soclm and was committed in default of 1500 bail. Garters with monogram clasps are now fashionable in Memphis. The style said to be convenient and pretty, and we hope to see more of it. Lightning struck a house in South Memphis last Sunday night, but did little damage save bursting off a few boards and producing a local earthquake. Shall the city schools be closed or kept open? is now a most important question for the city government to determine, The schools must be kept open, say the people. St. Louis is going into ecstacies over the Kellogg Opera Troupe. One squall from this troupe in Memphis would be worth one thousand dollars a night to a theatrical manager. 1 Memphis girls are now so overbur dened with beads and bugles on their costumes that they go tinkling and jirig ling along the sidewalk like the celebra ted old lady who had rings on her fipgers and bells on her toes. The Italian societies of tbe United States are about to prepare a petition, which will be sent to Congress, to ask that body to make October 15th a legal holiday, as the anniversary of the dis covery of the land by Cplumbus Bhould be. Already our senators and Represeta- tives elect are receiving letters from Nashville and other adjacent points from cardidates for little offices at and around the State House, such as door keeper, towel-hanger, boot-black, desk- duster, etc. We saw two gentlemen on Main street to-day holding their right hands up and who held their hats in their left hands. Our reporter rushed over in search of tbe item, but discovered that it waB a magistrate swearing a man to a warrant, the business magistrate not having time to return to his office. While that Grand Jury of the United States Court was indicting white men for discharging negro employes after the AugUBt election, why did not the jury investigate the conduct of a postpfliee official who called up bis clerks and stated to them the ultimatum, " Vote the Republican ticket or lose your situa tions'?' Yesterday there was rain, hail, thun- er, lightning and sunshiue at one and the same time lu Memphis, and tbe thermometer stood at midsummer point. The hail fell in large crystals, the rain in large drops, the thunder roared and the lightniag flashed in North Memphis, while the sunbeams from Arkansas made rainbows in tbe sky. Since the election the great headquar ters of the P. R. and V. party on Madi son street has been deserted. No longer can the wise men, the aristocratic look ng leaders or the dead-beats of the dark-lantern party, be seen as of yore shaking their heads and gesticulating fiercely at Democracy. We miss these solemn-looking personages. Yesterday afternoon a Frenchman named Louis Devierc, orLeviere, slipped while rolling a barrel on board the steamer Grand Tower. He fell back ward, striking his head against another arrel, and death ensued almost in stantly. A messmate testified tbat he new Deviere in London, years ago, and that he was a sailor, rlis arras and breast were tatooed with India ink sketches of ships, anchors, etc. As a general rule men who are arrested and carried to the station-house give fic titious uiaes and beg newspaper report ers to'.keep their name out of the papers. But there are exceptions to this rule, one of whom our reporter saw locked up a few nights since. The " collared " chap nsisted on having his name put down in full, bis occupation, the number of hit plac of business, the number of his room, and made a special request that all reporters would make a note of it. He was drunk, but' the respectability of his relatives saved him from being pub lished that time, the good natured re porters not wishing to take advantage of the vagaries of a drunken idiot Koilee. The board of directors at a meeting last night decided to close the Exposition on Saturday, the 14th inst., and we would remind all who wish to attend to do so now, as the few remaining nights will be the most brilliant and attractive of any since the opening. The Royal Marion- ette troupe gave two performances to day, and were greeted with a tolerably fair audience. "Flip and Flop," which was rendered with such good effect last night, will be repeated to-night, with new mechanical tricks and scenic effects, Tbe grand soiree dansante, by Professor Mueller and his pupils, Friday night will be one of the most magnificent at tractions of the whole Exposition, the programme and particulars of which will be found in the advertising columns, under the head of anviBcmeuts. Yesterday afternoon a negro named Gordon, who resides on the Pigeon Roost road, near this city, was engaged in cot ton picking near the plantation of Dr, White, near Commerce, Mississippi. A shotgun had been stolen from the rest dence of Dr. White, and he, learning that it was in the possession of Gordon, sent out some of his hands to recover it. Gordon refused to give it up, and at tacked one of the negroes. Gordon was about to kill the negro, when Dr. White rode up and asked tbe other negroes why they did not interfere and protect their comrade. At this Gordon became exas perated, and, seizing his shotgun, fired at Dr. White, who returned the fire with deadly effect, killing him instantly. The Doctor was arrested, and was brought before a magistrate, who, on hearing the testimony, acquitted tbe prisoner. Where to Get Clolblnsr. The attention of gentlemen is called to the advertisement of Messrs. Sproule & McCown, Nos. 241 and 243 Main street, corner of Jefferson. Just think of business coats for ten dollars and everything else in proportion. Tbe above gentlemen have one of the largest stocks of clothing in the city, and, they are prepared to sell each article at the lowest possible prices, and they are able to do so, as they manufacture their own clothing especially for the Southern market. The public will find at this establishment custom made clothing at prices generally paid for an inferior article of wear. In the lines of underwear, shirts, socks, drawers, etc., a very large stock of su perior goods will be sold at reduced prices. All large-sized clothing has been made a specialty, and here is a chance for the heavy weights who find it most difficult to get fitted at a clothing house.
