Memphis & Padncah, throe weeks of eaeh year, 117,352 sgainst f 17,272. Taducah & Elisabethtown $37,3C4 SRainst $28,029. The total earnings of 47 railways for Ootober sum up $23,012,502, showing an inorease over the same time last year of $2,201,573. In commenting opon these figures Eastern journals say that for every dollar earned in Ootober 1878 there was earned in 1879 $1.25, that this was increased in ISrX) to $1,401, and that this year it was further increased to $1.62. Milesge of roads' was also increased, bnt not anywhere near in the same proportion. A featuro of flnanoial interest is the fact that railway aid bonds of our neighboring 8tate continne to advance in Eastern markets. ' A few days sinco they rose to 33 and 40o for the several issues. Three years ago they were a drag at 3Jo. As an evidence that tho trade aod commerce of the conntry is in a pros perous oondition, the mercantile agen oies report fower failures in the Unitod States during the last quarter, than for any similar period in the past seven years. After the thanksgiving holiday roH tho banks reopened to business this morning with the financial situation unohangod. Money is quoted easy at 6 to 8 per cent, discount and in light mercantile demand. Kates on exchange aro to fo dis count buying, and par selling on the East, and to Off buying and par selling on New Orleans. Drafts on New Or leans, New York and tho West aro sold by the banks at par.' Cottou. The markot to-day is quiet, the tone rather favoring buyers, though factors are unwilling to grant concessions. Prices are unchanged. Low ordi nary, 7Jo ; ordinary, 9o ; good ordinary, 10o; low middling, lie, middling, life; good middling, 11 Jo; middling fair, 12e. ' General Trade. A weakness is visible in almost every loading artiolo of consumption, and prioes on several are quoted lower orinclino downward. The poultry market is over stocked with chickens, and several dealers report prioes en tirely nominal. Gcoso are very flat and slow to sell. E?gs sre stiff aod command fancy prices. Cured meats are lower; fresh beof is in over supply with prices weak. Lard tends down ward, while hogs, both on foot and dressed aro stiff and steep. Flour is in moderate movement, and while prices are not reduced, yet the feeling is weak. , Cornmeal is easy and slight ly lower. Foodstuffs aro all inclining downward. The same may be said of apples and potatoes, especially Ohio river stock, much of which arrives hero in poor order. Potatoes have beon coming in freely, many unripe and skinny. Dealers are shy ef lots to hold, benco prior s are weak and sales slow except for strictly choice, and several consignments per steamer Parker have been stored. She picks up her freight (expreps only) by running into it head 00, and it slicks to her like poking a pin in a fly. The crew pot it off between landings. Tbe table is supplied with fih picked off the rudder when she backs out from a landing. She is owned st St. Paul.it is said, but could not be bought for love or money, as she suits her owners exactly. The President of tho com pany. Wm. F. Davidson, has had a special uniform made, so that ho can take charge of ber now and then. When about to make a trip, ho wires a day or two ahead for fear tti boat may beat the message, and the citizens ru-h to the landing with bands of musio, ill playing, 'See the conquering hero conies, and 'Long may sho wave.' No such Gem was ever heard of before, or behind. Her President expects to build two more exactly like her. She is a success of successes. Tho boat leaves hero every Tuesday, and if yon wish to get a look at her, you must come on Monday, as sho might slip away before they could bridle her down. She slips her hawser at noon promptly, and if you should happen to be a few minutes lato, you'd have to use lightning if you are desir ous of getting her lull dimensions. The Memphis) and Charlesiton. The Little Rock Gazette of yester day says: In connection with tho recent change in tho Memphis and Charles ton railroad dircotory, following tho absorption ot interests hostile to the Cole syndicate by a majority of that corporation's stock, the Gazette will venture a little prediction for the ben eGt of its Memphis friends: An effort will be mado to force tho Cole syndi cate to take the stock at or above par, and thusavoid the vexations and delays of a lawsuit with men who can afford to go to law, and who can doubtless find flaws in the lease of the M. & C. to the Cole syndicate aforementioned. That this is the programme, 'to be car ried out unless another combination should bid higher, seems to be reason ably olear. The Memphis & Charles I ton is a valuable property, whose pos session is desired by several , outside parties, among tbcm the Louisville A. Nubville company and tho Earlangcr syndicate. 1 TEX X KSHEK'M LA W Y EIW. A Mate Itar Association to be Formed.
