"No mombor shall make, buy, sell, u. :ur;ii. or iau to ue turmsuvu to thers, as a bercrage, any epin nous or malt liquors, wine or cider ; and every member shall discounten anco the manufacture, Bale and use thereof in all proper ways." !-. 1 -H -' JL Word to the Wise Oujlit to be Sufllcient. To U lAttot of Trnmpmnaem Dprtmat : I take the position that the Bible pos itively forbids the use of ardent spirits as a beTersge; and this is the highest authority that I tan bring before the mind of the reader. If you w.H not hear because of God's word, I have no fcope left me that anything that I might sty would hare the least bearing upon the mind of any of your readers. We are fully aware, too, that men cannot be coerced Into measures of this soil, nor have we any disposition of the kind. For it is by kind words that we always expect to accomplish the great est amount of good. Our object in these few thoughts is te give you a few plain Bible facts for yoar consideration; hop ing that it may be the means of fortify ing you against the greatest evil of the day. For drunkenness, in my humble opinion, is a greater curse, and doing more to people of the world of woe with 1 tE mortal spirits than the late war. It Is true, that during that awful contest raany noble spirits fell, but many of these went, no doubt, to a rich reward in heaven. We cannot ray a much for those who fall in the ranks of the druak ard;forthe Bible most positively for bids it, and expressly declares by the mouth of the Prophet Isaiah, that IIell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure, and that those who ric up early, in the morning, that they may follow strong drink, that con tinue until night, till wine inflame thfm, so they regard not the word cf the Lord, neither consider the operation of Lis hands, therefore, thall they de scend into it." There can be no anis t&le, as to the true import of this pas sage. While Paul declares that no drunkard shall inLerit the kingd'-m of God. Placing the sia of drui kenne&s with a catalogue of the blackest crimes of which men are guilty, both in his letter to the Corinihiarss and the GaIs tiaas. The Idolator, the Adulterous, the Thief, the Murderer, the Drunkard, and they that d such things, shall nev er inherit the kingdom of God. Now this is a firm fixed dvcree of God, und men may think of it as tl.ey please, still it i . t : .. . i : r ? '. h t rr :.r.' ' !-. f :. ri. ' , it i:,r t-.; t!.v. :t- ll.fi are, :.i-: r i thi it wi'i uiVfl be ptnnitted to enter the courts of glory. This must appear obvious to all, who i:I but take a glance for one mo ment, at. the effects of intemperance upon the Immortal destiny f man. We scarcely need a revelation to tell us the awful doom of the drunkard. For it is next to impossible to bring anything to bear upon his mind, thtl would move Lim to change his course, and leave his habits. You rosy talk to him. and if yon can gain his ear, and convince him of his danger, and the only way of es cpe, be has no resolution left him to cairy out your advice and save bis soul from eternal perdition. It would seem to us, that almost the only hope that i left a confirmed drunkard, is to pray for him, and yet prayers are net miracles, and it does seem from the effort that are made to reclaim some men, and yet fails, that it would take but little less than a miracle to save them from th vortex of eternal perdition. My advice te young men would be never to form the habit, or acquire the the tas'e; fe theciisisin a drunkard's life is at the very commencement of the use of ar dent spirits. I repeat it, the point of danger to every man Is in dram-drink Ing, for no man ever thinks ef becom ing a drunkard, when he begins to take his dram, and yet in many cases it is the first step to a drunkard's grave. S. A STRANGE FRIENDSHIP. AkuiNGTox. July J . i lie warm friecdhip which exists between Gen M. C. Butlor, Senator front Sth Car o!ina, and Don Cameron is well known in Washington. - The Southern Senator had, until the recent lease of Cameron's elegant bouse, a suit of rooms in it which were as much his as if he. In stead of Cameron, owned the house The Republicans have wendcred at this intimacy, but not nearly so much as have the Democrats. The Republicans, however, are ready to bless the tie that bind, whatever it is, because it se cures them from any political loss in the Senate through Cameron's absence in Europe. It is known, whether that abecre be hog or short, that on all po litical questions Butler is paired with Cameron. Some ef the Democratic magnates have remonstrated with But ler, telling him that it is a bad policy to make such indefinite pairs, but he replies that Don caay ttay as long as he likes, and be sure that his pair is right. The Drawer is especially good. The August number of Dimorest'i Msntelt Magazine repays perusal, the articles being well written and ef an iutcresting nature. "Agatbe Pa Yalsuzts" is the coromencemnt of an admirable story. "Out of the World" concludes pleasantly; and the shorter stories are all excellent. Among espec ially entertaining articles may be men tioned "Seven Borax Villages ef Italy," "The Lemounier Schools in Paris for the Professional Education of Wo men," "The Costumes of some of Ro etti's Dream Women," and an Illustrat ed article on "Tne St. Gethardand Mont Cenis Railway ." Jenny June contin ues her interesting articles "IIow we live in New York." "Current Topics" are agreeably discussed, and the vari ous departments are replete with use ful information. The frontispiece is a charming portrait of "A Celebrated Beauty," while among the other illus trations are three designs for cottage homes. We know of no publication better suited for the household than Demorest's Monthly, and the August number fully justifies the reputation it has acquired as a good family maga zine. ITEMS OF INTEREST.
