Annual Iteport of the Secretary of tlie Protestant Orphau Asylum. ' On an anniversary tilled with touching re miniscences, our tirst emotion is deep and heartfelt gratitude to the author of ail our blessings, for his w atchful care aud guidance since the commencement of our enterprise to the present hour. Most truly gratifying to us is the contemplation of our orphans in the enjoyment of health aud a comfortable home. We congratulate ourselves on the aid we con tinue to receive from the Free School, towards their steady advancement ia intellectual im provement, leaving to us the industrial and moral portion of their education, thus happily co-operating in the formation of their cha racters for future usefulness. Ample grounds surrounding the Asylum allord them, in the short intervals of leisure, the opportunity of relaxation necessary to health aud cheerfulness. - They still perform all the manual labor of the household, and make their own clothing. The neatness und order that prevail evince the judicious sup;.-r-iiiteudance of the Matron, Mi's. Si'ExCEit, who, since her short stay w ith us, entitles herself to our thanks and kind consideration. The happy arrangement of transferring some of our orphans to desirable situations iu re spectable families by adoption, will, we trust, secure to them, the vigilant care and atten tion they have rec( ived from u, and we hope will rnsult in mutual friend-hip that may in tiuence their future ditinies. We have, as yet. no cause to regret placing some- of our larp r girls iu the "house of In dustry," thus qualifying them by a knowledge of useful needle-work to obtain a respectable ind'pndiice when they will be wholly thrown on their own resources. We cannot be too thankful to those who, from time to time, have kindly assisted us iu placing books on our shelves; and indulge the hope of similar favors. Dy encouraging our girls iu reading well-seh ct' d authors, we Lope to ej-tablish a permanent claim on their kind rccolictioii, when in future, they may le called to persue a path which will re quire the direction such moral guides point out. The contemplation of an almost exhausted treasury, for some time past, would have lill ed us with fear and dismay, hud we not relied ou the sympathy that has never failed iu the trying hour. The successful result of our tableaux and Hipper al'.oiils us prescut relief. For this timely boon we bow iu gratitude to the young ladies and gentlemen of this city, who, with a rc.'iucment of ta.-te and sensibili ty, thus gracefully contributed to the support of our little girls. Our patronizing friends respond in the usu al way, and we can give no more earnest as suranc" of our grateful appreciation of their attendance, than the wish that they may have many enjoyments of as pure aud elevating a nature us were dieted on that occasion. There can be no higher benevolence thau that ex tended to young children. When we fold around them, iu their innocence, the urms of charity, do we not imitate that encouraging uotice of them expressed by our Savior. What latter impulse than the wish to "light a smile" on their young facts. There can be no more important trust laid on our responsi bility than tin- care of the rising generation. Our littl girls have within them the germs of future excellence. Transplanted to a genial soil, w ith watchful care and culture, we trust they will expand in luauty of character, und iu their usefulness spread a moral iutiuence around them. To qualify th m to fill rrsifct able stations w ill k- the consummation of our most aid nt wishes. Thus far have we witnessed the answer to our orphan's prayer, "give us our daily bread.'1 We humbly trust w.- shall be the instruments of giving support and shelter to those whom the late visitations of Providence have given a claim to our sy mpathies. To all cases of destitution we cheerfully open our doors, as sured of the kind co-op-ration of our friends and the public. Sneh tine ly appreciation of our wants at IU inclement season, will swell the tide of gratitude, lifting up our hearts to that Great Source of mercy to whom the mar iners cried ia their peril, "save or w e perish.", To our benevolent friend, Dr. Ii. C. K. Mau Tix, we would aeknow 1. de our il'i'p sense of obligation for physical strvices iu cases of ill ness at the Asylum. Dr. J. Iiuowxentitl -s himself to our repeat ed thanks for nndicincs furuUhed during the past year. The publishers of th city will accept our grateful sense of their kindness, with sincere wishes for their prosperity. Is Scotland the Cannel Coal-Oils have been very fa vorably known and extensively used in the place of Sperm, for the last few years. Oils of a similar nature and quality are now being made by the Union Coal and Oil Company, and are very highly valued wherever known. This Oil has the same weight and will bear the same temperature, when winter strained, as the best Sperm, and is folly equal to it aa a Lubricator; having been subjected to tlie severest tets upon both heavy and light machinery, and given eulire satisfac tion. This Oil is peculiarly adapted to Railroads, Cot ton Spindles. Machine Shops, and all machinery where a fine Oil is required. It is more economical than ordinary Oils, as it is sold at about the tame price, and as half the quantity will do an equal amount of lubrication and do it better. This Oil being entirely without gum, should be used in the same manner as the nnestsperm. Tho openings of the cans and feeders used for ordinary coarser Oils should be reduced, otherwise, the OU will be wagUid, These Oils will be furnished to dealers at the factory prices, adding freights, insurance, and exchange, and all Oils sold by this company are fully guarranloed as represented.
