Col. FiELUrt was a native of Tennessee, and has relatives living in this county. lie began life as a printer; and worked at tbe case in Columbia about twenty-five years ago. If we are not mistaken, be was at that time con nected, either as editor or publisher, with one of the papers here. He went from Columbia to Nashville," and thence to Knoxville, at one of which places be prinU-d and published the first edition of bis "Scrap-Book," a work which may claim the distinction, we believe, of having been the firet literary work ever published in Tennessee. Copies of this edition are now very rare, though a few years since quite a number of tbem, dim with the dust of time, and much soiled from long usage, were to be met with in Maury, William son and Davidson counties and were very hignly prized by their owners. In 1851 Col. Fields issued a revised and improved edition from the press of LippiDcott. Grambo iCo. 1'hiladelphia, and the work may now be had at any of the book stores in this country. Col. Fields emigrated to Texas atout the yearl83fi. lis was elected to the Legisla ture from Liberty County some ten years ago, and continued to represent that county through several sessions. He held a number of other responsible offices, the duties of which he discharged in a manner highly cre ditable to himself and satisfactory to the peo ple. At the time of bis death he was Chiel Engine r of tbe State. He resided at Gal veston. Col. Mirror. Planter Bank of Tennesaee. It was perhaps last week that we had tbe pleasure of seeing the President of this ster ling bank in our town. He came as we un derstood, to make a personal examination into tho condition and working ot the Franklin branch. Probably no one doubted the sound ness of everything about the branch before; but since Orville Ewing has endorsed O. K. upon its doings, the doubters, if any there were, will doubt no longer. The visit was made in the accidental absence of our cashier, but as nothing needed to be covered up, it made no ditlerence. We profess to understand just as little as our iieightKirs just as little as anybody but the Memphis Avalanche of the business of banking. But there are some things m pa lent that even we feel safe iu speaking of them. And one of the things so prominently obvious, that "he that ruus niny read," is the fact, that to the firm and sagacious matiage meut ol the Planter's Bank, are we mainly indebted for tbe present sound character of Tennessee currency. We would detract noth ing from the merit which the Uniou or any other bank may rightfully claim ia this mai ler; we only mean to say that if any of them Ma id upon tquul footing iu this regard with the Planter's, their action has come less within the limited scope of our observation. We hope that this huriesl testimony of a financial ignoramus iu favor of the Planter's Bank, will do that institution uo barm. Irahklin Jiet itw. Brick Kii.x BntsTEo Neuo Max Kiixeh.
