Annablo was callod upon, wno arose ana saiu : J hat he favored this movement, and that the farmers of bis town wero getling arou?ed, and V '.in to feel considerable interest in Agricul :..!. lie then dwelt on tho importance of a knowledge of Agricultural Chemistry, said if we could obtain an analysis of tbo soil of this vmft the results might be highly beneficial, lie said that we ought to have a fair this fall to exhibit the state of Agricnltnro in this coun ty, and another in five years, to see if wo had made any improvements. The Hon. P. Haydou was then called upon, who arose and said : That although he bad farmed it very exten sively, in this country, yet be bad to confoss that he was very ignorant of scientific farm ing. He said that he had never attended a fair m his life, he thought that the society might be tho means of doing a great deal of good ; he said that tbe raising of wheat was a bard business nuder tbe present system of farminif-the amount raised not paying the .m .t.hali nf IhA Hl.te Will SOOW, being only an average yield of eight bushels or thereabout to tbe acre. An opportunity wa s tlun offered, and nearly all of tho citizens present came forward, and SUl ribed their names and paid the amount, (one dollar entitling them to hecomo members tor one year, several others have declarod their Intention ot Joining the society. I ne following amendments to rt, 4th of the Constitution were adopted : " The Treasurer of the society, shall on re ( Oipt of any money belonging to the society, whether for feor-, of membership, or otherwise, tret noilpt t beret Off to the person payiug the same, which r ooipt bhall bo count, rsigmd bi the secretory and the ecroiojr shall charge the amount ot such receipts to the Baid Treasurer and the Soeretary shall crodit the Treasurer with all monies paid out by him for tho soeietv ou presentation of tho proper vouchers." The stalls for hoop and -wine Mere constructed along the west side of tho fence enclosing tho public giounds, while the cattle and horses weie tied to trees standing on tho nnoccnpiod lots be tween the fence aud Kalamazoo street, which at that time, were all vacant and used in com mou by the dealers of tbe village, as a place whereon to deposit tho soundest and most to bo relied ou currency received for goods sold 1 namely. "Fine Shaved Shingles," the only cur- j rency whose value did not fluctuate and change from week to week. Tho Court room was used as a " Floral Hall," and to it came a good exhibition of domestic manufactures. Tbe collection attracted much attention for its variety and the excellence of the workmanship. The display had but few specimens of fancy work, but was mado up, for tho most part, of articles of usefulness and prime necessity such as home, manufactured cloths and flannels, clothing manufactured m the household, counterpane-. qnJttl of patch work, yarn mittens, sock-, gloves and under wear. In the vegetable department, a good show ing was made. There wore but few horses and cattle, aud they were regaided good for tho tim but were much inferior to tho spOMMM exhibited of late years. There wore but few sheep of verv inferior qualitv. and the swine werj of tbe variety since known as the " Land 1'ike." Tho annual address was delivered by Hon. I Charles E. SrEWAitT, ia his best stylo, from a drv-goods box under tho Oak tree at tlie north west corner of tho Court House. Although many oMojtftafl were entertained as to the result of this first venture, it was voted a " Crand success."
