' :nnr wiTii'ALtNATic; An Kxcltlrvg Episode . la Utta Mining . -. . Town '"' A borrff poJent ot tbo falt Loko Herald write from Dry Canon under date of the 10th inst : Yesterday the popla of this camp rere very innch xcitcd over the choso and capture of an insane man. A native of Swodeiv whose name I can neither Bpell nor pronounce, has been residinpr in the town of Jacobs for the period of about three year, and been engaged a miner, aesayer, and expert, lie claimed to be a graduate of the Freiburg School of Mint1, and evidently was a wan possessing ft superior education. For some time pnst he baa shown signs of insanity, but of such a mild form that it was not deemed necessary to con fine him. On the morning of the 9th ho armed himself with a huge knife and started out to "run the muck," otherwise, to cleau fho town out, and tho first place he bronght up at was tho Mono tunnel, where he assaulted some of tho em ployes and drove three of thrm to take refuge in that snug holo in the ground. The cnizyffllow followed them in to near tho face of tho tunnel, when they concluded they would run the laro ear over him or foreo him to leave the tun nel to avoid being crushed ; but loi they had nuight a Tartar. The crazy man was the stroogesr, and jorce me car back, against their united strength, un til they wtre in danger of being crushed between it and the face of tho workings,' when (Providence watches over miners as well as sailors) some noise at tho mouth of tho tunnel attract ed his attention, end tho men secreted themselves. Leaving the tunnel after demolishing everything breakable about tho place, ho retired to his hut. A crowd soon col lected, and, headed by tho Deputy SheriiT, they, after supplying themselves with a goodly quantity of ropes and other tackle, followed to his den. Ar rived at the plr.ee and opening the door, they beheld the poor maniac crouched in a dark cornf r, his eyes lighted up by tho fire of insanity until, as one of the beholders fluid to ine, they looked like balls of living firo." The moment the mnniio beheld the motley and threatening throng ho drew his kiiife and plunged for tho dour, when peace ofliccrs, prominent citizens, mem bers f tho Cf and Army of the Itopub ltc, and Young Men's Christian Associa tion came suddenly to tho conclusion that the place was unhealthy, and rushed pell mell down the canon, leaving one poor fellow (lirira), who either could not or would not run. Envious persons say he woro side-hill boots and couldn't. Tne enraged maniac made toward him, knife in Land, when he of the crooked heeled boots caught the Swede by the wrist, and tho struggle for life on one side and blood en the other commenced. Down on the ground, among the rocks and brush, now up and now down, lirst the 8no man lighting for life on top, again the insane one ditto, when some of the stampeded crowd came back and managed to throw their ropes around and secure tl-o infuriated mad man. He fought desperately to the last, and was oly conquered in the end by force of numbers, and this morning left in the coach, guarded by two men. x St. Louis Residence. Mention was made some time since of the case of an ancient school-marm in reduced circumstances, who prudently kept within her means by occupying a pig-pen on Eighth street, letwecn Wal- nut and Clark avenue. This domicil , consisted of some old boards laid across J the corner of a fence for a roof, and a bundle of straw and some old rugs com posed the furniture. This humble man sion seems to have been equaled by a similar cheap human domicil visited by a Republican reporter yesterday morn ing. About one square nouth of the school-marm's home, and on tho east snlo of Eighth street, opposite tho mouth of the railroad tunnel, is an open lot having a gentlo slope toward the street. It seems to be covered by an old crop of ashes emptied from the neighboring dwellings and scattered about in liitlo conical heaps. On this rather dreary-looking lot, an old weman of tho neighborhood has squatted, hav ing been expelled from some unpreten tious underground cellar for inability to pay her rent. Tho present dwelling is a enricsity. It unites in tho same apart ment, parlor, dormitory, and reception room for gat sts. Her dwelling, in fine, consists of an old tool-chest, such as is used by street contractors in which to house their fchoveta and picks. The cover shuts down slantingly, and forms, when closed, the roof, to keep cnT the rain, dew, f leet and snow. At night the old lady descends into her house, and, closing down the trap-door, disappears like Jaek-in-tvbox. In tho daytime the cover is held open by a flake, and the apartment is ventilated. Tho furniture of this humble dwelling seems to con sist of a few tin utensils, and some spare fragments f old carpet spread out on a Doaru, iorm-cg a seat ana a sneii. ine kitchen part consists of an iron pot, which was simmering over a few em bers, with no roof over it exsept tho canopy of heaven. Tho old woman was seen hacking away at a refractory plank, to chip off some firewood, in the pres enc3 of a small crowd of Woys and girta. St. Louis Republican. A Glass-Eating Negro. A colored man called at tho office of United States Marshal Kerns recently and complained that he had a month's . pay due him for service on a craft hail ing from New Brunswick, and wished to take some legal measures to securo his money. It appeared, when an investi gation of his caeo was made, that ho had shipped as a sailor on the vessel, which is a small curiosity craft bonnd for Aus tralia, and that ho could not establish a claim in court. Ho said ho did not in tend to f hip as sailor, but as a ' glass eater 1" The Marshal naked him what kind of glass ho ate, and ho said, " Al most any Mud, except blue or colored glass ; that his wonderful powers in this direction wero exhibited continually, and that only a limited supply of other articles c-f food wero furninhed ; ho fre quently dippd of ten or fifteen 1 lrap chiuuuys a d iy, and occasionally a lamp was thrown in. Hy way of a dessert ho took nail-head and iron lngs." H pays his crse has been in7estigt-d by many pyleiavXud -u constantly eaten glass for several years without in jury. However, 1 ho ' does ' not think it contains much nourishment, aud threat ens to desert his vessel, pay and all, if the reat of his bill of faro is not im proved. Philadelphia Press. Au International Potato-Exhibition. What is described as au " International Potuto-Exhibition for the encouragement of the lt methods of potato culture and diffusion of improved varieties,' was yesterday opened at tho Alexandra I'atace. It was stated that there wero over 2200 dishes of potatoes exhibited, aud they covered six loDg tables in the concert-hall of the building. Te be lieve this ia only the second year of the show, which is therefore in 'its infancy. Thoro is scope for improvement in the ext?nt and aim of such a work. Beyond doubt tho attraction and value of tho work may bo considerably increased. Looking at tho six long tables loaded with plates of tubers, good show though they make, they teach nothing to tho mass of the puU'C. All the specimens were uncooked, and, beyond their vary ing sizes, colors, names, and exhibitors, the oulooker gathered nothing of infor mation. A-housekeeper might take a lesson if in some futuro exhibition Bhe could 80 the relative merits of the fotato, cooked as well as uncooked ; earn that smooth, well grown snow ilakes" are preferabla to rough-skiuned Hakes' that rod-jacketed kidneys may bo excellent baking potatoes", but. that Kings' ore better for boiling ; that certain "snowballs" will s'eam where they will spoil by boiling. In short, in tho purchase or. cooking of potatoes us much judgmeut may be exercised by a knowledge of the respective external appearances of the varieties as in the purchaso of au up pie. Tho present show is decidedly a success as far an it goes. There are 500 exhibits, and no fewt r than seventeen classes iu which prizes are offered aud wero allowed. Tho high est prize in "class A," given by tlie Alexandra Palace Company, was 12 guineas. In other classes silver cups, valued at 10 guineas, as well as money prizes of less value, wero offered. Au exhibitor, announced as of Meldium, New Brunswick, was successful iu carry ing off the first prize in as many as four classes. With tho exceptiou of this ex hibitor and two others from Scotland, the exhibitors were all of the British islands, and tho title of " Inter national" is therefore somewhat of a misnomer. That it may assume far larger proportions, under the manage ment of an executive committee some of whose names aro well known in agricult ure, may do quite possible, ana it may certainly be made ot considerable useful ness. Ijfjrtdon Times. A Womlcr of Art. " What's this, mister ? " said a curious countryman who was wandering through a Washington street jeweler's store, aud as he spoke he rang a statuo of Mercury with his horny knuckles. " That," said the attendant, "is Mer cury," and ho passed on to wait upou a customer. That rural gazed for a moment with open mouth at tho bronze representation of the messenger of the gods, and then beckoned to a companion at tho other end of the store, to whom ho said. "Jim, what do you suppose t vat ere figgeris?" "Idunno. responded Jim, in tvru giving it a resounding rap "bronco, hain't it?" "No," said the other, "taint; it's quick-silver." "Wuaatl the stuff they put into thermometers 1 Wool, I am durncd. What'll they do next?" And after another long look the couple moved on impressed with the wo iders of art. Ronton Commercial Rullctin. In Position. William Slide, a resident of the Eighth ward, returned from the Black Hills the other day. Our reporter called at the house to see what interesting fact could be gleaned in regard to the gold country, and found William in good health. After some littlo conversation our reporter asked : " Didn't John James go with you V "Yes, sir." " Did he also return ?" "No ; he didn't want to come." " Doing well, was he ?" " He feemed to be." " Was he making money?" "I don't think ho was," answered William. "Ho wasn't working very hard when I last saw him." "Hod a good fair position for tho winter, at least ?" queried the reporter. " It seemed to be a good position, and I suppose ho'll hold it all winter, lie is in a box, ana about lour loot under groiuid, and I don't know why ho shoultln't stay there 1" That was all William had to say, and about all he cared to tell regarding the Hills.
