progress today about the Sarveyor
hip of Colorado. In order to secure
tht Indiana delegation, and to op
erate on Smith, the Secretary of the
Interior, I hare promised that all the
nub-appointments shall te made by us
jointly, 1 giving them the first choice.

ly, authorizing me to make that pledge

on a hair. You must use the telegraph

"If I get the appointment it will be
tbe first of such importance where the
candidate has done nothing. I have
promised all the subordinate places un
der you to get help, and yon most write
me at once, authorizing me luliy, umler
your hand, to make this good. I ask
fur three of tbe places myself, and give
the rest to other members who are
helping me.
This is considered the best appoint
ment in all the Territories, and is the
best of all tbe Territorial appointments.
I want to have an interest with you, if
I get the place, in tbe city and town
lot speculations. The Pacific railroad
will zo through this Territory, and will
be a fortune to us if I can get it. There
are some fifty or more applications for

Tomato Soup. Wash, scrape, and cut

turnips; put them into a saucepan,
with a teasponful of batter, and half a
pound of lean, new bam, let tbem stew
very gently for an boor; then add three
quarts of brown gray soup and some
whole black pepper, with eight or ten
ripe tomatoes ; let it boil an hour and
a half, and pulp it through a sieTe;
Serve it with tried bread cat in dice.
