Hugh Rnley of this city is canvassing for the sale of Hayes & Wheeler and Tilden & Hendrlck's charts. These charts are decorated with tbe likenesses of the respective candidates and the plat forms of their party. 5TIn reporting the proceedings of the 4th of July celebration at Oregon, we inadvertently omilted to mention the toast, "Our Common Schools," res ponded to by Mr. Bryant Cowan. The response was a masterly effort, and was attentively listened to by the mul titude. GJadge W. W. Caldwell .and Hon. W. S. Greenlee, both of Savannah, Mo., were in this city on Monday at tending to some business at the Pro bate Court. They am both live Repub licans and predict a glorious result in November. CSThe cherries were never more bounteous than this year. Our neigh bor Jacobs, tbe furniture dealer, un doubtedly raised the finest and largest sweet cherries we have ever tasted in this country. They were perfect beau ties and were admired by all who saw and tasted them. B'-H. T. Alklre and J. H. Minton, whose departure for the east we chroni cled at the time, returned on Tuesday from their trip to the centennial. Dur ing their journey they visited Washing ton two days, Philadelphia foar days, New York one day, Niagara one day and Chicago one day. gyHoa. J. L. Smith, oae of the Lwide-awake attorneys of Jefferson City, was In the city on the 10th. looking jip his chances as Democratic candidate for Attorney General. If our opinion of his entire competency and good wishes could carry any weight with the domlnent party pf Missouri, we think Mr. Smith will certainly be the next Attorney General, provided always that no one else gets the start of him. The Smith family is a big one, and if they should all stick in a vote for J. L. be is sure to be elected. "Parties Just returned from the East speak ot Tllden's nomination as one easily to be defeated. Thousands of honest Democrats have forsaken their party, and declare that they cannot support a Wail street stock jobber, who by bis sharp operations has amassed bis millions. The sentiment is freely expressed that the present professions of retrenchment and reform on the part of Mr. Tilden and his friends are In sad conflict with that gentleman's antecedents and previous actions. As a consequence Mr. Hayes1 chances of an election are increasing from day to day. QDan. A number ot Mr. Kunkels Washing Machines bnvo been ordered to Germany, England France, Brazil, Denmark, and one goes all the was to New Zealand. (STBro. W. R. Adams writes ns a communication finding fault with the management of the 4th of July celebra tion at Oregon, for allowing dancinz to go on within the enclosure of tbe Court House Park. He says it was a burning shame to tolerate such fandangoes. As the directory allowed n dance for whites and another for the visiting In dian warriors, who had come overlrom the reservation to exiblt their war paint &c, we would like to ask Bro. Adams which of tho two was the most offensive ? We had no hand In getting np those "fandangoes," -as Bro. Adams calls them, but we are free to say that wo pitied those white young men nud women who lor hours could dunce around on that platform with tho ther mometer at 90 degrees in the shade. nnd the swet penetrating through their clothes. As for our Indian dancers. we had sot pity, ns they seemed to be used to it. The "Two Bonny Castles" Is tho rich. est, raclest,Jolllest, happiest and funni est piece ever presented to the saticens of Oreeon. It will be put up by MJsses Belle Orcn, Stella Goslln nnd Delia Cotton and Messrs. Joslyn, Lewis nnd Hersbberger, Corning Items. I w The Centennial 4th of July will long be remembered by the citizens of Cor ning and vicinity, because of the pleas ant memories of that day. From the very origin of our first expressed de sire to celebrate our glorious natal day, it became evident tho patriotic spirit that characterized our forefathers, who closed their shops and Ictt their plows standlns in the furrow, to offer them selves upon the sacred altar of justice, liberty and equality before the law, was still Implanted within the great heart of hearts, of the proud American citizens of to-day. The execution of the programme was given into the charge of II. Dankers, nnd was well and gracefully done. The arrangement and supervision ot tho pic nic grounds, was placed in charge of F. W. Walter, and the result was, we had the most charming and in viting grove In the northwest. Sys tematically arranged with plenty of Ice water and a good breeze, enabled ns all to keep perfectly cool, and enjoy the occasion hugely which 3500 people did and with all this vast concourse of people.not a drunken roan was present, nor was there a quarrel or dispute of any kind, to mar the pence and gener al good will prevailing. This however is characteristic of Corning. Among the processions that moved out from Corning was oae head ed by B. Earl.by a company of men rep resenting the thirteen colonies. These men were all dressed In red, white and bine, mostly of patterns of a hundred years ago. Mr. .ban nau a large plat form erected on a log wagon and la belled Democratic platform on one side and Washington 1776, and Tilden 1876, on the other side. Upon this platform was placed twenty kegs beer over which was placed a half ton of Ice. This company was composed of tho following gentleman, the first named being tbe oae who escorted the six yoke of oxen. Here is the name in full: William Henry Harrison Tlpa canoe Log Cabin Hard Cidur Ft. Meigs Johnson Davis. Next comes G. W. Flnck, the witty clownish minstrel per- fonaer.fainiliarly known as"peal head" held the procession spell bound by his antics. G. Bennett was another sao- ccssfal comic performer. M M Keen, P Flack, J H Flack, Wra Roades, Wm Bulley, C Smith. J Adkias, L Droth, J Rhoades, all dlplayed flue dramatic talent, and oae coatiaaons roar greeted them from all sides and throughout the entire procession. Mr. Earf must haveBpcnt over one hundred dollars in arranging everything con nected with his fourth ot July sports. Next in tbe procession came Deacon G. F. Stnbbs, mounted on a "Rush Cart," preceded bya company of young gentlemen on horseback, dressed in uniforms composed of flags of red white and blue. Tbe company consis ted of G F Stabba, H Scheete, D Wboeler, Geo Yolkmer, Ang. Miller, K. Volkaer. Chat. Leaike, H Johnson, R Hayes, Liaeein Caslvr and Lewis Uensdorf. Tbe rash cart ot olden times was first used at wakes, then In later times or about the year 1600, was used in England to convey articles for exhibi tion to the county fairs, and still later in Gny Fuwkes day, was nsed to carry provisions to the celebrations of ye olden time. This procession presented a very grotesque appearance, and was loudly cheered throaghont tbe march. Fol lowing this procession was citizens In carriages aad wagons, fully a half mile In length. This procession was marshaled by J. R. Dodds. The pro cession ot civlllians under charge of Dr. Hayes, as Marshal, had preceded us by an hoar at least. THE EXEKC18E8, At the grounds were iu progress when the last procession arrived. The ora tion by E. G. Kellog Attorney-at-Law, Rock Port,. Mo., was simply sublime. Tbe whole struggle for national Inde pendence was reviewed from the Bos ton Tea Party down. The battles of the revolution fought over and tbe heroic participants, held up as exam ples to be admired and emulated. Mr. Kellogg In this oration, won laurels . w , hlm mntBT,nii tn v.. . i . A new piece entitled 1876, composed expressly for the cen tennial year, was Admirably sung by the glee jjub uader the leadership of Mr. Kissinger. I Our eelebratloa was taken iu hand by our oldest citizen, and no effort was spared to make It a grand success. Mr. Jerry Brown supplied a team of four handsome mules beautifully deco tated to draw the band wagon. Mr. Jordon J. Denney read tbe declaration of independence, in the most impress ive manner. HARBISON RUSSELL, an old and rrtpeeUil citizen of Holt county, died at his residence 8K miles east or Oregon, on July 7, 1878, aged SS years and 11 months. He had been complain Ins three or roar weeks of Impaired digestive functions, and the de langements growing out of that undoubtedly hastened his death. Mr. Bussell was born In dirt county, Ohio, In Jnly, 1833. Twenty eight years ago he settled in Holt county, where he was generally known as an Industrious and well-U-do farmer. A dreply bereaTed widow aad St children and a largo circle of relatires and acquaintances remain to mourn his loss. The letter will do to republish, especi ally ns Mr. Rca is shaping his course to bo n candidate for re-election : J. M. Davis. Editor Ledoeb. Dear Sir; I feel great interest in the St- Louis Convention. A mistake made there will result in defeat to the Democracy. Detent to the Republicans in this centennial year means defeat for years to come.and no body understands this better than the Republicans them selves, and they will make a desperate effort to save their party. I believe their nomination will com mand the full strength of tbe party. Tbe nomination of Hayes does not pro duce as much enthusiasm as the nomin ation of Blaine would have done, but in the end will command a much larger vote In my opinion. Hancock stock is rising hei every fast and especially since tho Cincinnati convention. I have been very favorably impressed with Hend ricks nnd would be pleased to see him F resident, but under tho clrcnm stances am now inclined to the opinion that Gen. Hancock can command more votes than probably any man we could nominate.- The south will support him and he will certainly command a largo soldier vote in the north. I fee more interest in the St. Louis convention than nny convention that ever assembled. If Tilden is nomina ted my opinion is ice are beaten. The west will give him a cool support beside be has too much opposition in bis own state. I have no time to write further. I truBt tho convention will act wisely. Whoever the nominees may bo, I shall give them my hearty support until the day of election. Very respectfully your obedient ser vant, DAVID REA, M. C. 1 ej - Council Proceedings.
