  • Beginning with issue for Jan. 28, 1870, this paper traces its beginning to the Missouri whig and general advertiser, also published by Jacob Sosey in 1839. However, that title became Palmyra courier (Palmyra, Mo.), eventually moving to Hannibal, Mo. Vol. 1, no. 1 of Palmyra spectator mentions "respite of some four years" for Sosey.
