The Bayou Lafourche levees are ca- t ving in several places, and require attention. t Sewing machines sold and repaired I by Mr. 11. H. Willers, in the building I adjoining the Wharf. Prices moder ate. List of letters remaining in the 5)onaldsonville post-office on the first inst. published in this issue. The river still rises slowly, but has probably nearly reached the highest point to which it will rise this season. About $1500 has been paid in for State and parish licenses during the week just ended, and but few licenses remain unpaid. These must be set tled instanter. There was to have been a meeting of the Common Council Monday last, but as Mayor Smith and Mayor ad in teriu Weinsclhenck were both absent from town the session was not held. The Town Constable has piocured a supply of poisioned beef, and is ad .iiinistering this delicacy to all stray Jogs that loaf around in his way with out license collars upon their necks. We are told that Messrs. Adlard Landry, Henry Cook and Henry Hley man have becn appointed to fill exist ing vacancies in the Police Jury of this parish, but we have seen no offi cial evidence of their appointment. Mr. V. Cantrelle, commissioned as I SDl)eputy Sheritl, took to Baton Rouge this week the only person who has been sent to the penitentiary from our parish this year-Henry Hahn, convicted of horse stealing and sen tenced to two years implisonment. We are in receipt of a letter from Maj. A. K. Arnold of the I!. S. A., in forming us, that he will be in Donald souville on the 26th of June to pay bounty claims to parties whose case have been favorably, considered at Washington. Claimants in St. Martin, St. James, Ascension and Assumption parishes are notified to meet him in D)onaldsonyvile on the day mentioned. tSunday, June 15th, will be the Catholic anniversary of the Fete de Diceu, and will be celebrated, weather I permitting, by a procession similar to that which paraded the streets of town ppon the same occasion last year. This will be led by the St. Cecile and , and the St. Mary-Jeflerstim 'College hand of St. James, w!ich has also been invited to participate in the cer emonies. An interesting spectacle may be anticipated. On Sattrday nexit the limitgrauted by Act No. 46( to delinquent tax pay rrs within which to.pay tmheir dues 4 X ithout beingi subject to the penairties prescribed for delinquency will expire, after which tinme collection will be enu forced and penalties exacted. We hope all interested in this matter will take notice, and wisely square up be fore the expiration of the time speci I fled. It will be a great saving of trouble anul expense. Another week of almost daily rains I1 has passed, and there's no telling how much longer the deluge will continue. The crops are certainly being dam aged by the excessive amount of wa ter which falls upon them, but it is impossible at this time for us to ap proximate the extent of the injury. It will be a sad misfortune to our planters if unfavoralle weather ruins the excellent prospects of a large yi(eld which have existed this season, for they greatly need at least one year of large returns from their labor and in vestments to compensate ini a Ineas ure for the losses and misfortunes that have accunlmulated upoin thelI since the war. The magnificent steamer Katie will pass D)onaldsonville upon her down ward trip ,ev'ry Sunday af'terlool beo tween the hours of one and three, and will carry passe.ngers to New 4)rleans at the rate of $2 O5 each. The Katie will stop for hails at all points along the coast, charging $3 each for passen gers who embark below )omaldson ville, and will also bring passengers from New Orleans to I)onaldsonville or intermediate points at the same price. Many of our people who have occasion to visit New Orleans will hail with pleasure the opportunity af forded them to make a trip upon the beautiful Katie at a rate not exceed ing the cost by rail. The otli'ers of the Katie arc all agreeable and olulig ing gentlemen, and the appointmeints of the noble steamer are not e-'celled either as regards eleganrce or com pleteness by those of any (a'lft upon the Missississipi, and a ride upon her must, in the very nature of things. he a most enjoyable episode in one's ex pericuce. THE IEAILlROAD SOLD.-ACCOrdilng to advertisement the N. O., M. & T. R. R. was sold at public auction by the U. S. Marshal in front of the New Orleans post-office yesterday. The purchasers were Messrs. IIenry J. Gardner and Peter Butler, both Mas sachusetts imen, agents of the second mortgage bondholders, the purchase of course being mnade snlject to the first mortgage bonds, which are as sumed by the buyers. For the section of road extending froni Mobile to New (irleatis -,IOH),0t() was paid; fIor the section extending from New Orleans tenll miles beyond Donaldsonville, S201),0(0 (; for the see tioli extending from the point last mimed to the Sabine river, $50,(0o0; for the 'T'cxas section, extending from the Salbine to louston, 15 0); and for seventy-two thousand cross-ties, $16,000, making a total of 6(i7,5010. The parties who purchased the road express an intention of prosecuting the w ork of completing it to I lostoon without unnecessary delay, and they anticipate accomplishing the task within two years. We wish the new management Ile(: most abundant success in their under taking, and shall feel it a pleasure to chronicle the renewal aId proglCess of work upon the road. Sc'loo1. MATTFIRs.-A meeting of the I'arish School Board was held at the Conut-llouse to-day, the oflicial minutes of which will be pulnlished in next issue. Although no resolution to tihat eflect was adopted, there was a tacit understanding arrived at aLmIong the cimembers that the schools of the parish should not be opened prior to the first of September, after the heat ed term) has closed. 'Teachers and others to whom the Board is indeblted will rejoice to learn that sufficient funds are now on hand to liquidate the entire amount of their obligations upon presentation. Besides the April apportionment, which amountedm to over $700, the T'reasurer received $832 from the former Tax Collector in final settleumcat of all collections of sciool tax. There is now awaiting the order of the Board, at the State Treasurer's $153, accrued interest fiom school lands, and the June aplportionment will be ready in a few days, so that when schools are opened in September the Board will have a nuug little sum1 of utoncy with whicý to commence operations. The Town Board of School D)irec tors will probably be organized dur ing the coming week, and it may be that schools will be opened in town ilmmediately thereafter. We publish in this issue the report of the G ruand Jury of Ascen.ioun palish, made tl t the Judge of the Diatrict Court on Friday of last week. We do not claim that our copy of the report is a correct one in every particular, t because we have extracted it from the Leader, and have reason to know that it has been altered in sever,:l plates i and the language considerably uodi lied, as can be proven by reference to the original document. \Ve have taken the liberty to revert to the original language in two instances andl t revise the punctuation somewhat ill order that the reading of some doublt ful portions may Ie rendered clear, but aside from this the documecntt is siubmitted in its ipristine purity to theaduiting gaze of the worldat la rge. 'The elegant comlposition aln matlch less grammar of the paper at, once. arouse the suspicion that oiur ab ie and truthful D)istrict Attorncy is thl author, while its glaring one-sidedneus -its whitewashing of all oflicials and things personally pleasant to thatt royal personage, and its mutd-slinging, i and currish snalpping at all in the least disagreeable to himt-cotnfi 'm thatsuispicion in a great degree. There is one thing in whicht all of our read els who :aelc cogtlizalt ()tof the mater ial composing the (ra:nd Jury will agree, and that is, that the members 1 of that itnquisitorial body are no more I guilty of the formation of their own report than they are of having incited the JModoc war. We are reliably in formed that a mIeilmber of the Jury was perfectly astounded thle other liay by having sonime of the passages of lthe report whicth hi had signed read to him.
