Services of more than ordinary impres siveness were held at the Catholic Church last Sunday in celebration of the festival of Corpus Christi. Breaux, the estimable manager of the Ascension plantation, who reported the crop outlook in his vicinity as promising. By dint of hard work during the intervals of dry weather Mr. Breaux has kept his cane quite free from grass and is well satisfied with its condition. The continued illness and subsequent death of Judge Duffel's wife caused a fur ther postponement of one week in the mat ter of the preliminary examination of the young men charged with the murder of the Chinese butcher, assaulted and robbed on the Delogny plantation, in St. James par ish. The examination is now set for Mon day next. A fine Sunday dinner, second to none, at the Riverside Hotel, for 25 cents. Much work has been done in the way of cleaning out the street gutters of the town during the past two weeks, and most of the dirt taken from the ditches has been thrown on the sidewalks to fill up low places. This will prove a decided improvement when the dirt is smoothed out and dries, but for the present it renders some of the banquettes well nigh impassable. It is the opinion of at least one of the prominent physicians of Donaldsonville that the town authorities have acted un wisely in choosing the present season for cleaning out, the gntters and upheaving quantities of mud and vegetable matter to decompose under the burning rays of a Ju ly sun and perchance sow the seeds of an epidemic in our midst. Maurin's enlarged Cheap Grocery Empo rium is packed with splendid bargains in every department. They need to be seen to be properly appreciated. The editors of the Casr, principal and associate, desire to acknowledge their in debtedness to Mrs. W. J. Walter of Plaque mine for the cordial hospitality extended them on the occasion of a visit they made to Plaquemine Sunday before last. Mrs. Walter is a charming hostess and it is a pleasant privilege to abide as a guest with in the precincts of her pretty little home. Box DRowNED.-A colored boy named Adam Gautreau, aged about 15 years, was drowned in Bayou Lafourche, opposite the plantation of Mr. Numa Vives, Assumption parish, last Monday evening, shortly after dark, while in swimming. The body has not yet been recovered. The steamer Isa bel worked her wheel over the spot where the boy sank, but this effort to bring the corpse to the surface proved unsuccessful, as have all others made since. Visitors from the country should not for get that a first-class dinner can be had on Sunday at the Riverside Hotel, for 25 cents. Messrs. Davis & Rolling express them selves well satisfied with the success of their Rapid Transit stage line and Hampton fer ry up to date, and spare no effort to seoure the safety, comfort and convenience of their patrons. With an elegant stage, a team of powerful horses, and large new skilfs covered with awnings to protect pas sengers from the heat of the sun, they find 1o difficulty in making all connections properly andpleasing all who travel to and from Burnside Station via the Rapid Tran sit Line. You can get the Singer Improved High Arm Sewing Machine on easy terms of S. S. Ingman. We are in receipt of a handsome invita tion card which foreshadows the approach. ing marriage of Miss Henriette Levy, one of Donaldsonville's most charming young ladies, to Mr. Felix Kahn, a young and pop ular merchant doing business in the parish of Lafourche. The interesting ceremony is to take place on Wednesday, the 14th inst., at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lazaes Levy, the bride's parents, and the occur rence of the auspicious event will be awaited with;much interest by a host of friends of the contracting parties. The advertisement of the St. Vincent's Institution, which appears in another col umn, merits the careful and favorable con sideration of all who have daughters or wards to educate. The reputation of this institutien is too well known to require commendation at our hands, and the terms offered for the tuition and maintenance of pupils are certainly reasonable enough to satisfy the most exacting. St. Vincent's is a branch of the celebrated St. Joseph's Academy at Emmettsburg, Maryland, and is conducted by Sisters of Charity on the same plan as that noted institution. The latest sensation in hotel circles is the first-class Sunday dinner at the River side Hotel for 25 cents. One of the features of the fair to be given at Smoke Bend on Saturday and Sunday, the 17th and 18th inste., for the benefit of the Church of St. Francis of As sissium, will be a contest for a gold watch between Misses Pauline Rose and Adline Bourgeois, attractive and popular young ladies, whose hosts of friends will un doubtedly exert themselves to seoure the success of their respective favorite. Votes will cost but twenty-five cents each, and it may be accepted as a foregone conclusion that the contest will yield a handsome sum for the worthy object which the projectors of the fair have in view. Manhatta, best, G for 25 cents, still in the ead, at Ingman's. The public schools of the ninth and tenth Justices vards-commonly known as the New River section-will close at the end of the current scholastic month, and those of the river wards will continue in session one month longer. The reason for this inequal ity in the duration of the terms is that the New River schools were kept open last year a month long than those of the river wards. The Ascension Academy at Donaldsonville is not included in either of the categories mentioned, having closed for the summer vacation two weeks ago. The weather is too hot for school keeping now and the Board of Directors ought to give all the achers and pupils a vacation during the tmonths of July and August. BAss BaLL.--The PhiL Caldwell club, a team of genial young men and good ball players, came up from New Orleans last Sunday and played a closely contested and exciting match with the Lees of Donaldson ville at Cleveland Park. The attendance of spectators numbered about 150 and all were well pleased with the fine exhibition of the national game which was afforded them. The score by innings was as fol lows: Caldwells............1 0 0 0 3 0 2 0-6 Lees,...................0 0 1 2 0 0 1 1-5 Umpire-James O'Neil. Boorers--R. McCulloh, Tos. Park. The Lees played with a nine composed exclusively of home players, and "showed up " in a style that greatly pleased their friends. With such a catcher as Bothner or Wartman behind the bat they would have won the game, almost to a certainty. While not wishing to detract in any way from the well merited laurels of the visit ors, we must take exception to the state ment published in the New Orleans papers that only one base hit was made off Lud wig, who pitched six innings for the Cald wells. Most of the players in the Lee nine made base hits, but failed to bunch them sufficiently to win. Only eight innings were played, as the Caldwells desired to re turn home by the evening train. They ap peared well pleased with their visit and promised to repeat it at an early day. - The Wilds of Donaldsonville went to Plattenville last Sunday to play their first game, and were easily downed by the Char lets, the score being as follows: Charlets.............2 4 3 0 1 2 1 7 x-20 Wilds ...............0 1 0 1 0 a3 0 - 5 The Wilds didn't have long to wait for revenge, as the Charlets came up to-day and played them a return match, at Cleve land Park, which the home boys won with comparatively little effort. Following is the score by innings: Wilds...............2 8 5 0 2 0 4 8 x-29 Charlets............1 0 0 2 0 2 0 2 8-10 Umpire-L. E. Bentley. Scorers--. A. Marks for Charlets, Chas. Al lain for Wilds. The Viguets of Plaquemine defeated the H. & G's of New Orleans, last Sunday, by a sccre of 14 to 2 in five innings. Just after the game the Viguets took the train for their tri to Shreveport, where they played four games, on Tuesday, WAdnesday, Thursday and Friday, three with the noted O)K's and one with the Stars. The first game was won by the Vignets, 3 to 1; the second by the O K's, 9 to 6, and the third also by the O K's, 12 to 5. The visitors met the Stars yesterday and sent them into eclipse by 29 to 3. The Vignets play at Natchitoches to-day, at Boyce to-morrow, Alexandria Monday and Cheneyville Tues day. They will, in all probability, win all the games at those places. The gallant young O K's, who still claim the rural championship of Louisiana, are playing an entirely home team this season, having no imported or paid members. We scarcely expected to see them win the series with the Vignets, who have a very strong nine, and the result warns the Don aldsonville clubs contemplating trips to Shreveport that they must put forth their best efforts in order to cope with the Shreveporters. To-morrow's game between the Lees and Fortiers, at Cleveland Park, is the all ab sorbing topic of interest in local base ball circles. On the succeeding Sunday, the 11th inst., it is probable the Fortiere will go to Plaquemine to meet the Viguets and that the. Lees will cross bate here with the Nor man Mohrs, a strong New Crleans club. The Lees Junior defeated the Throwers of Port Barrow, last Sunday, by a score of 20 to6. The Charlets reorganized at Plattenville on SuBonday last, and we have been favored with a list of the officers, members, com mittees, etc., which we shall publish next week. A similar list from the Wild club is also deferred until our next issue for lack of space. The Fortiers expect to start for Shreve port on the 18th inst., and the Lees on the 25th. The latter club will probably extend its excursion to Monroe and Vioksburg. Sixty Days' Clearance Sale. CHEAP TONY TO THE FRONT, AND DON'T T9U FORGET IT! The writer did not get there before 1-30, but judging from appearances, those who had arrived be fore him had made very good use of their time. Among the charming young ladies who were there when he arrived were Miss Monot, the ac complished daughterof Mr. E. L. Monot; Miss Mary LeBlanc, the charming young daughter of Mr. Joe. E. LeBlanc; Misses Jumonville. Helluin, Jones and many others. At 2 o'clock the lovers of croquet assembled to have a game, in which Dr. E. T. Dngas and lady joined, and while these were playing cro quet others were giving them music on the piano. At 4 a bell was heard, and the large crowd as sembled for dinner, and although 150 persons were there, the writer missed one, the editor of the Donaldsonville CHIEF. At about 5 the crowd began to increase, carriages came from every direction. and among the new 'arrivals the wri ter was happy enough to notice the fair belle of Napoleonville. Miss Lulie Sims. and the hand some faces of our young lawyers. Messrs. Wm E. Howell and L. H. Pugh. A little later Dr. T' B. Pugh and lady and Miss Ballard of Ascension put in a welcome appearance. At 7 the dancing commenced and continued until a late hour Mr. Savoy at the piano and Mr. Landry with the violin gave very good music. The Wenonah Social Club will return the compliment to the Merry Makers by giving a grand moonlight picnic on the 21st inst. J. M. Ascension Gun Club. BUIRNSIDE P. 0., June 28, 1880. DUFFEL-Wedneeday morning., June 30, 1886. at Woodstock. Ascension parish, La., ANN -. DUNNINoroN, wife of Judge Henry L. Duf el, aged 63 years. The sad event here recorded had been for some time foreshadowed by the prolonged ill ness with which Mrs. Duffel was afflicted, and the relatives and friends who deeply lament the loss of this noble woman, have the consolation of knowing that the dispensation of Providence which has so sorely bereft them, gave her a blessed release from physical suffering. The remains were escorted to the Church of Ascen sion, at Donaldsonville, Thursday morning, by a large concourse of the kinspeople. neighbors and friends of the deceased, and after the im pressive ceremonies of the Catholic ritual had been performed by Rev. Father Dubernard, as sisted by Rev. Simon, the body was reverently consigned to the family tomb in the cemetery neari the church. The stores and other places of business on the front streets of the town were closed during the passage of the funeral cortege and until after the burial, an indication of the general regret caused by the demise of Mrs. Duffel and the deep sympathy and respect for her honored husband. The CHIEF tenders to Judge Duffel, and to the son and daughters of the lamented deceased, assurance of profound condolence with them in their hour of poignant grief and affliction.
