Dr. John E. Duffel, Coroner, on last Monday held an autopsy on the body of Caleb Sweet, an old negro man who sud denly fell dead pn the Dogas plantation in this parish while at work in the field. His death had been caused by the excessive heat in the cane rows. He had eaten dinner and gone to work without any signs of indisposition, but on a sudden, wi:h his working implements in hand, was stricken down. "' Dr. McGalliard's little daughter Jennie, who has been an invalid for so many weary months, is apparently much better, and the Doctor has decided only to spend a week or two at some near watering place, instead ot of taking his usual summer vacation. This is a chance for our local builders and they should at least attempt to secure it. The Juniata Bqnevolent Association of New Orleans, a fraternity of young men some two hundred strong, will visit Don aldsonville Sunday after next on a morning excursion train, and, spending the day in town, will return in the evening. Extensive preparations have been made for the recep tion of the excursionists by Mr. D. F. Ham ilton, representing the members of the As sociation, and a livply time is expected. Din per will be served in the gardens of the Riverside Hotel just after the arrival of the frain and the visitpre will then repair to the Phoenix Hall, where they wili dance away the time until the hour.for their re turn. The ponaldsonville Independent Band will furnish music for the occasion and the Fortier Base Ball Club will play a game of base hall with a nine to be brought up by the 4ssocigtian. The fair and concert at Smoke Bend for hte benefit of the St. Franois of Assiseium Ghureh, was held Saturday and Sunday on the church grounds, and was both well and liberally patronized. The tables were pre sided over by ladies of the congregation, their winning smiles and pleasant demean or, fairly coaxing the shekels from even the most unwilling, while the "concourse of sweet sounds" rendered by the Inde ipedant Brass Band, added harmony to the occasion. The concert given by the Smoke Beand Dramatic Club, was very enjoyable, comprising a minstrel performance and and the rendition of the farce "Between Two Stools," with the following cast of characters: Gen. St. Joseph's Academy. Saturday July 24, the commencement exercises of the pupils of St. Jo seph's academy took place under the auspices of Prof. J. E. LeBlanc, Principal, and Mrs. N. Terrio, As sistant, the excellence attained by the schol are reflecting great creditbn their able pre ceptors. The exercises were unusually lengthy, beginning at 9 A. M., and continu ing until 4 P. u., when an intermission was given until 6:80, the time appointed for dis tribution of prizes. We regret exceedingly that the length of the roll precludes publication in this issue, and will content ourselves with mentioning that all the scholars did remarkably well. Donaldsonville, La. Died. FEVBIER.-In New Orleans, at the residence of her father, REGINA, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jean Fevrier. It is with deep regret that friends and sorrow that relatvees received the tidings that the in exorable Reaper had out down this flower, just budding into maturity. At nineteen years she was the embodiment of all that is womanly. intellectual, she was honored; generous, she was loved; dead, she is mourned by all who knew her. To Mr. and Mrs. Fevrier and the bereayed rpembers of her family we extend sippers condolence. VIALLON.-In the parish of Ascension, La., on Monday, July 19, 1886. at 11:45 A. N., WIDow H. VxLLoN, aged 71 years, 6.Ilonths and 19 days, a native of St. John the Baptist parish. The deceased was on a visit to her brother. Mr. Alfred Esneault, and it was at his residence .that the end arrived of a long and peaceful life. On Saturday, July 17th, 'she was stricken with paralysis and never recovered her faculties. Death relieved her from her. sufferings two days later. GRILHE.-At New Osleans, on Thursday, July 22, 1886, at 12:30 P. Y., Mas. PAULINE GRIHE, aged 63 years, 6 months and 23 days. Mrs. Grilhe was for years a resident of Don aldsonville, and leaves many friends who will long remember her kindly ways and gentle dis position. The remains were conveyed to this place yesterday morning on the T. & P. train, and buried from the Catholic church.
