Toledo, Sept. SO. The failure of the
nking house of Krouse V Smith is an-
uouui'ed this morninc. an aisignuient hav
ing heen made after hank hours yesterday.
El i.- understood that the causes of this
lailurc are traceable to embarrassments
arising several years ago, the most promi
nent among which were realized to a large
real estate operator. The hank had on de- j
posit $80,000 of county and city funds.and '
28.0IK) of Toledo school funds. The !
amount of liabilities and assets cannot now j
be stated. There is no excitement.
Bl'KKALo, Sept. l!ii Everything in the
financial and commercial circles wears a
cheerful aspect here to-day.
New York, Sept. 211. The scene on j
Wall street was much less excited to-day.
The crowd of brokers who have hitherto
blocked up Broad street, in front of the
Stock Kxchange. was much less than in
the morning, owing to the cuergetie action
of the police captain of the Second 1're
cinet, who directed his men to disperse all
group which threatened to interfere with
idewalk trafiie. The brokers were by this
means driven into the road, hut they fared
no better there. The police ordered trueks
to be driven tlirough the crowd, and eom-
lielled the brokers to scatter in all direc
tions. Driven from Broad street some of
the most inveterate speculators and curb
stone brokers adjourned to the Gold Ex
change Court, aud held high carnival there
for about fifteen minutes, when the Ser
geant of Police, with half a dozen men
drove them helter-skelter from their refuge.
The police filled Broad street with hacks,
aud the crowd was broken up.
.new Iork, Sept. 26. The general
feeling iu financial circles is il rninnrllir im
proved. The day's record closes with some
confidence. The belief ia that the bottom
of the panic has been reached in this citv.
and there is a fair prospect that when the
stock exchange opens there will be but lit
tle left to arrange in the way of settle
ments between brokers, so that there will
he no new failures to announce. The banks
are ready to pay currency to meet pay
