A significant eonnucnt upon the capaci ties of many teachers conies from Eli i abeth, S. J , where applicants for positions i in the public schools have just been exatu ! ined. A dozen would-be teachers present ed themselves at one time. The Commit j tee proceeded to examine them all. There j were several positions vacant, and it was 1 hoped that out of the dozen a sufficient number would " pass" to till the positions. I The examination was one eminently prac 1 tical, as only primary grade con ifieates were i needed in only tour or five elementary j studies. Tlie result was anything but sat isfactory. Twenty-five words were given I out to be spelled. They were all of them . . prac tical auoV in common use every day. i 1 One applicant spelled two correctly out of the twenty five, another spelled three, one 1 or two only spelled nearly all, but none spelled every one. " Manuagery, "Nu j omnia.' " l'aralel, 'lNitch, " Belleta. , ! " Croeha, ' " Mischietbus,' " Cruqua," I " ISclioharry" -these are some of the sjiec- imen words as copied from the examina tion papers themselves. The Committee I on Teachers insists that a candidate must : receive at least 70 per cent only five ! reached the standard in selling. Vet the ; ones who were most deficient thought they j could get along if the committee would j "only give them a chance." In geography ! the examination showed up several candi j dates iu a light that would have been com I ical under different circumstances. The I questions and answers were both written. . Here is a specimen: Question " Name several of the prinei I pal seaport towns of the United States, i Answer "New York, Massachusetts. Maine and Florida." Question "How would you go trom I Philadelphia to lenna by water. Answer " Delaware River, Delaware Hay, Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Pa cific tcean." These are actual written, Iwrm fide an swers of applicants tor positions as teach ers. In all the other studies in which the candidates were examined there was shown the same lack of competency, and out of the twelve who applied, only a very small proportion received the requisite 70 per cent, in all the studies. TOO MUCH MEMORY WORK. A Mobile newspaper sensibly says that the "prime evil of the prevailing method of teaching consists in the caref ul eultiva tion of the memory to the neglect of the thinking powers. Commencing with the teachers, even of the highest grade, down to the youngest child in the school, there is an almost slavish adherence to the mere language of the test books. Teachers do lIfLlflC tacmociij-i WJ -ovi MM j lesstiDS, to comprehend thoroughly their : full significance, but on the contrary only I too frequently go into the class-room and : 1 ? hear the lesson. In the book in order to theory this is mat al- ( lowed, but in practice it is pretty eent ral. Such lieing the case, the teacher, havine no higher sense of responsibility than the necessity of going through a certain form I in order to secure the quarter's salary, is j very well content to find the scholar per i feet in the mere language of technicalities i of the lessou. The scholar, finding noth- ing further required, is only too glad to : perform the comparatively easy task of committing so many lines or paragraphs to ; memory, leaving its comprehension severe i ly alone, or to follow blindly rules without : any pains to discover their scope and value, j As a consequence most school children have their minds choked with dates, facts, : and the mere language of laws and prinei- pies of which they have no understanding ' whatever, and aside from the routine of ' the text books know absolutely nothinir.and have not made their own. by mental di gestion, any appreciable portion of the knowledge they have spent so many h tints in attaining."
