The cry of the nation, and of the world, today, la for food and yet more food; and anyone who can. In any way, conserve and increase the food Supply of the people at thin time is a true patriot. To suggest, that we should save our hogs, nt any time, hut more especially In the country's present crisis, may seem quite uncalled for, or even ri dioulous. However, there are one or two points in this connection which may be overlooked, and will bear stressing. The first is with reference to the use and abuse of serum. Serum, as every hog owner knows, is a valuable protective agent against hog cholera, the. demand for which seems to be on the increase; and from all account», the Shite serum plant Is having all It can do to meet the requests fop se rum that come to It. The intelligent and judicious use of serum is all right, and is to be com mended. But may there not be some hog owners who order serum when not really needed, or order quantities tar in excess of what they actually re quin- at the time? If so, and we think It not improbable. It means a waste of s *nim, and is probably depriving others of Its use on account of a tem porary shortage of the supply thereby occasioned. In intelligently conserving the •* nm supply, therefore, it means con serving and increasing the people's food supply In hogs. On the other hand, the one who, through the wasteful use, or abuse, of strum, deprives some one else of 11s use In trying to save hlr, hog», is not only not aiding contervation, but the very opposite. The second point Is, the adoption of strict sanitary measures In connec tion with hog cholera. The man who does not effectually destroy his ehol era-mfccte' , carcasses, but permits them to lie around exposed to be the mean* of spreading Infection to his own »till healthy hogs, and to his neighbor's herds, is surely not using his best efTorts to conserve and in crease the hog supply, and. therefore, the food supply of the people In liog» and hog products. And the same may be said with re gard to thorough dlBinfection of chol era-infected premises, etc., In order to destroy Infection and keep it from spreading and killing more hogs with cholera. In other words, the man who uaes every oendecivor to save the lives of hiR own hogs, and those of his neigh bors for to on at 1 vn hogs, and those of his nelgn . patriot tn tt. tn..« .«.«a - term, as ho 1» showing that ho ran display our patriotism; and this is a most important one which should rot br overlooked by our hog owners at this time of the country's »tress.— 1 TV H.
