Schexnaydre Secretary Police Jury, St Charles Parish, March 28, 1918 'BETTER FARMING" IVt are preparing tor a larger corn acreage than we have had in the past, and while we are trytng to boost production by an increase acreage, we should remember that we can add to the yield in several other ways Firt. Use better seed if you can get it. Most Jof our home grown corn is badly crossed, and shows a large percentage of nubbins. "If you must use your home grown seed, make the best selection po - sible Second. Prepare your land thor oroughly and dont be affraid to go deep enough with the breaking plow. A deep, mellow, sead bed offers the oest chance possible for the coin roots to fully use the fer tility of the soil in making as large a crop as the Soil can p oduce Third. Plant your corn low, at, 01 near the real levei of the land. You will produce enough of a ridge :n the cultivation of the crop to insure proper drainage, and the low lying roots will be in a better position to utilize soil moisture, & will be ..bie to make a crop of cron even in a very dry season, and, J assure you, that a wet season will not drown out your stand In fact when such corn is finger high \ou can consider it sate in Jany kind of weather Fourth. Use some fertilizers. Dollar and a half corn can well make a profit from good fertilizing materials, even if you have to pay a relatively high price for them Fifth. Practice shallow cultiva tion. We probably lose more corn from deep plowing late in the sea son than we 00 feom any other sin gle cause. About the only other pract'ce which can approximate the deep plowing ^loss is the habit J which is so common throughout" the south, namely, too thick a stand In thinring out your corn, most of lands should not have more than a single staid to every ten or twelve surface feet Our best land may support a single stalk every 20 to 24 inches on S'x foot rows Geo.
