Vial, Chairman Parish Democratic Executive Committee ATTENTION At the request of Mr. George 1 ât Rohne, County Agent the fol lowing is published for the benefit, of the people i Injecting Trees With Chimicals ^ To F revent Diseases and Insects The question is frequently asked | it is possilde to inject any chemi- | cal in a tree that will enter the saj j streim and Liter pievcm inju y t y diseases & injects. Frequently men pass arout <1 the country regions claiming that they have a substan ces that will do this and offer it for saleoi offer to treat the trees Only recectly such a "one" has been used on pecans and oranges in this .State Injecting chemicals into trees is, to say the least, a ^dangerous oper ation. Such treatment is more iike ly to injure the trees than .'it is to do them any good and will n t have any effect on the diseases ant: ,nsects that may affec the trees. The sa'e of such "cure»" shou'd be stopped and any nciividual who is imposing on the people by selling them su di a "cure" or of ering to inject trees with such a substance should be reported to the State Department of Agricul ture. baton Rouge La The substances that is being used on pecans is reported to con tain arsenic, Paris Green, Fowlers Solution. Carbolic acid and other things, all ot the above are poison ous to plant life and cannot have any other but an injurious effect Mutilation, such as scraping the bark etc., may also be a part of of such treatment. Under ordinary circumstances such injuries to trees sh mid be avoided. Under some circumstances when trees are growing very rapidly, injuries will teduce (their vitality and caus e them to set fruit However , as a general practice, any injury to a tree than that caused by judicious pruning should be avoided Prepared on request of the Dir ector of Extension Work, La. by—C. The rice weevil, commonly called the black weevil, does tha greatest damage to corn. This insect will at tack the corn in the field, consequent ly one must use measures that will re duce such damage. The only method of lessening the field ravages Is to field-select the seed corn in order ta be sure of getting ears with tight shuck coverings. The ends of the ears should be especially well covered as this also reducea the fis mage of the cora ear er no*tea boil verm. Plaid Infested corn should be harvested earlier than other can. By pulling If with the shuck on many of tbs wee vils may be removed. Such corn can be fed very early or it may he ptaeed (after shucking) la a very tight bta and treated with carbon bisulphide to kill the weevils. Csrbon bisulphide Is a liquid whleh passes lato a gas very quickly after exposure The gas ts inflammable, se keep lights and fires away. It Is heav ier than air. |*Mt If shallow dishes containing the liquid are set upon the oorn the gas farmed wUl pass down threagh the earn. It Is necessary that the gas eome in direct can tact with the weevils far at leaat 41 minutes to kill them. This makes It necessary to use nae pound of carbon bisulphide for every 1P0 cubic feet of apace la a tigbt bio. but If It la slightly open the amount to tue should he two and eae balf to three times as much. This fumigating should be done on a warm, still day, as the weevil begins to hi bernate at a temperature slightly below ?• degrees Fahrenheit. All buildings so treated should be well ventilated t4 to 48 hours after fumiga tion. There la no danger of ln]artag the germination of the corn, provid ed K Is dry, even by using still great er amounts than mentioned above.— A. F. Kidder, Profesaor of Louisiana State University HATCH CHICKS EARLY IN THE SPRING Many Ross*ns Why This Practice But Burly hatching next spring is races BM 7 if the fieslrsd Increase la produc tion of poultry is attained. It la also necessary, during the winter, that fanners save young hens and pulleta, so they will be on hand for stoek In the spring. The stock of poultry hns been reduced considerably this fall by a widespread aale, for market, of young hens and pulleta. Th eve fore, It la noeeeeary to conserve stock now, or oltte the shortage may lnterforo so rlously with the production program. In view of tho stock shortage, to kill a good hea now to to reduce the po tential egg production next year any where from five to twelve dosea eggs. Every hatching In the spring will increase the number and size of fowls and the number of eggs produced neat year. It will result In bigger birds, snd birds that will lay In the winter Months. Every farmer is urged to start the hatching season earlier than usual next year, elthsr by Incubation or natural methods, If the hens will alt earlier. Tho okfekdns first hatched In tho opring are tho fig« that are largest In tho summer, that mature first in the fall, and that MF gfcge 1° the win ter. Furthermore th4p are the ones that will want te alt aarly the follow ing spring, which. In turn, will hatch earlier chickens-—and so the cyclo _ ayß iun t w will continue. Oa the contrary, chick- I ene hatched late la the spring do not mature until so late in the fall that they will not beeosne winter layers. They will not sit until late In the next spiing, snd so another cycle of late maturing, lato layF ; fowls Is estab lished.— L. S. Ü. Press Bulletin.
